Excerpt from The Queen of China, and Other Poems Too long this long and lightless way I have trod And suddenly now I see What thing I tread, Lit by a transient flash of the lightning brain, That leaps in the sky an instant and is dead But, having shown, needs not to come again. Ridiculous treadmill! That the sorry fool Thinks is the road to joy, his brain is so dull. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Chinese Narrative Poetry written by Dore Jesse Levy and has been published by Durham [N.C.] : Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988 with Literary Criticism categories.

Chinese Narrative Poetry brings a new perspective to some of China's best-loved and most influential poems, including Ts'ai Yen's "Poem of Affliction," Po Chu-yi's "Song of Everlasting Sorrow," and Wei Chuang's recently discovered "Song of the Lady of Ch'in." Composed in the shih form during the Late Han, Six Dynasties, and T'ang periods, these poems stand out as masterworks of narrative art. Yet paradoxically, their narrative qualities have been little recognized or explored in either traditional Chinese or modern Western scholarship. The reason for this neglect is that Western literary traditions acknowledge their origins in epic poetry and thus take narrative for granted, but the Chinese tradition is fundametally based on lyric and does not admit of a separate category for narrative poetry. Drawing on both classical Chinese critical works and the most recent Western contributions to the theory of narrative, Levy shows how narrative elements developed out of the lyrical conventions of shih. In doing so, she accomplishes a double purpose, guiding the modern reader to an understanding of the nature of narrative in Chinese poetry and shedding light on the ways in which Chinese poets adapted the devises of lyric to the needs of a completely different expressive mode. Students of Chinese literature will welcome this pathbreaking study, but Chinese Narrative Poetry will interest other scholars as well because it addresses questions of crucial importance for literary theory and comparative literature, particularly the central issue of the applicability of Western critical concepts to non-Western literature and culture.

Poems written by Li Po and has been published by Penguin UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-30 with Poetry categories.

Li Po (AD 701-62) and Tu Fu (AD 712-70) were devoted friends who are traditionally considered to be among China's greatest poets. Li Po, a legendary carouser, was an itinerant poet whose writing, often dream poems or spirit-journeys, soars to sublime heights in its descriptions of natural scenes and powerful emotions. His sheer escapism and joy is balanced by Tu Fu, who expresses the Confucian virtues of humanity and humility in more autobiographical works that are imbued with great compassion and earthy reality, and shot through with humour. Together these two poets of the T'ang dynasty complement each other so well that they often came to be spoken of as one - 'Li-Tu' - who covers the whole spectrum of human life, experience and feeling.

China Suite And Other Poems written by Gillian Bickley and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-14 with categories.

GILLIAN BICKLEY'S fourth collection of poems in which she responds to people, art and life, creating a record of her particular space in time. Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Sukhothai, Honolulu, Mexico City, northernmost Scotland, Andorra are among the places. Intimates and strangers are the people. She is interested as much in a mother and son seen for some seconds on a bridge in Shanghai as in the emotions flowing between performer and conductor throughout a concert, and the interpretation one creative artist gives to that of another's work. She values the records we all make: - the heritage we may or may not preserve, what we choose to reveal of our lives, the constant interpretative understanding of the personal as well as the historical past, and the sacredness of memory. Here we find observation and reflection - on current affairs as well as people and places - and also the frisson produced by five "skulls" in a window, a funeral owl caught in hire-car headlights, and the realization that classical stories are re-enacted in our own lives. " ... a collection refined by the sensitivity and spirit of a poet who observes with the wonder and clarity of someone who is at once an insider and outsider. In her works, we see that Bickley's poetry has the ability to provide both spontaneous, on-the-spot immediacy and lingering, contemplative power.... "Every city may have its gaps, ambiguities and unknowabilities, and the poet's intimate and candid reflections in this collection have successfully uncovered some of them." - Hilary Chan Tsz-Shan, Reviews, Asian Cha, February 2010 (Issue 10). "You are lucky to have this poetry in your hand." - Karmel Schreyer "The poems in CHINA SUITE are unpretentious, direct, and even raw, like gemstones freshly dug out of a quarry. The psychological boundaries drawn to separate cultures from cultures, clans from clans, and individual from individual are utterly destroyed. An unnoticed observer, she trespasses ethnic taboos and social no-nos, and writes down whatever she sees without getting caught-in a graceful way." - Elbert S. P. Lee
