Queen Salome Alexandra ruled ancient Judea in the turbulent century before the birth of Jesus. She led troops, introduced universal education, expanded the rights of women, and brought healing to a nation torn apart by a civil war between the Pharisees and Sadducees. Vividly evoking scenes of ancient Jerusalem, Judy Petsonk's novel brings to life the queen's stormy relationship with her husband--and her love for the people who called her Shalom-Zion: the peace of Zion. ""A gripping, fun read . . . Judy Petsonk's sexy heroine, Queen Salome Alexandra, possesses the brains, hutzpah, and vision to save Israel not only from its many enemies but also from its own conflicted nature. A marvelous window into a neglected and little-known chapter of Jewish history."" --Ellen Frankel, former Editor in Chief of the Jewish Publication Society ""A whirlwind blend of palace intrigue, bitter rivalries and shifting loyalties circa 100 B.C. in Judea's Hasmonean dynasty . . . a romp of a novel, particularly for fans of Jewish history and culture."" --Kirkus Reviews Queen Salome Alexandra was ""an important, yet overlooked Jewish-leader . . . a model, especially for women, and for all who seek insight and inspiration."" --Rabbi Kerry M. Olitzky, Executive Director, Jewish Outreach Institute Judy Petsonk is the author of Taking Judaism Personally; Creating a Meaningful Spiritual Life, and the co-author, with Jim Remsen, of The Intermarriage Handbook: A Guide for Jews and Christians.

In contemporary New York City, a Jewish woman falls in love with a Palestinian wall painter who has been charged with killing her. Galia, a Russian Jew living in New York, has no idea that the man she's drawn to, Alejandro (not his real name), isn't Mexican at all, but is actually a Palestinian who carries out the wishes of his Mastermind, ostensibly a college professor. Where she sees a passionate, hard-to-reach riddle of a man, he sees a woman who is swept up in a global conspiracy to undermine Palestinian claims to Jerusalem-all because of a book she posted online about the ancient Hasmonean dynasty. But as they draw closer, Alejandro begins to question his assignment, putting them both in grave danger. "Very original. A monumental work of vibrant imagination." --Moris Farhi, Turkish author, vice-president of International PEN since 2001 "This rich...novel works on many levels, and it is impossible to label it, to define it by genre. It is both a love story, a philosophical novel, a historical novel, a surreal fable, a meditation on the absurdity of extremism, an allegory of our condition, and a mystery. In a nutshell, it is an original and beautiful novel." --Dmitry Borshch

Silencing The Queen written by Ṭal Ilan and has been published by Mohr Siebeck this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with History categories.

Tal Ilan explores the way historical documents from antiquity are reworked and edited in a long process that ends in silencing the women originally mentioned in them. Many methods are used to produce this end result: elimination of women or their words, denigration of the women and their role or unification of several significant women into one. These methods and others are illuminated in this book, as it uses the example of the Jewish queen Shelamzion Alexandra (76-67 BCE) for its starting point. Queen Shelamzion was the only legitimate Jewish queen in history. Yet all the documents in which she is mentioned (Josephus, Qumran scrolls, rabbinic literature etc.) have been reworked so as to minimize her significance and distort the picture we may receive of her. Tal Ilan follows the ways this was done and in doing so she encounters similar patterns in which other Jewish women in antiquity were silenced, censored and edited out.

Finalist for the Book Club category of the 2016 National Jewish Book Awards. The #1 International Best Seller, The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem is a dazzling novel of mothers and daughters, stories told and untold, and the ties that bind four generations of women. Gabriela's mother Luna is the most beautiful woman in all of Jerusalem, though her famed beauty and charm seem to be reserved for everyone but her daughter. Ever since Gabriela can remember, she and Luna have struggled to connect. But when tragedy strikes, Gabriela senses there's more to her mother than painted nails and lips. Desperate to understand their relationship, Gabriela pieces together the stories of her family's previous generations—from Great-Grandmother Mercada the renowned healer, to Grandma Rosa who cleaned houses for the English, to Luna who had the nicest legs in Jerusalem. But as she uncovers shocking secrets, forbidden romances, and the family curse that links the women together, Gabriela must face a past and present far more complex than she ever imagined. Set against the Golden Age of Hollywood, the dark days of World War II, and the swinging '70s, The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem follows generations of unforgettable women as they forge their own paths through times of dramatic change. With great humor and heart, Sarit Yishai-Levi has given us a powerful story of love and forgiveness—and the unexpected and enchanting places we find each.

One girl, one nation, one chance . . . Esther's story is one of the most dramatic in the Bible: a renowned beauty, she used her feminine wiles to capture the heart of a king and so win the deliverance of her people from the threat of death. The Gilded Chamber creatively re-works the famous story to show us how this young girl came to be in the harem of King Xerxes and how her path to womanhood enabled her to save a nation and find peace. This is a tale of strength, seduction and survival, of the solidarity of women, and its descriptions of the Persian palace and the secrets contained within those walls will hold you spellbound to the final page.
