Queen Victoria and Prince Albert loved Scotland dearly, and from the time of their first visit in 1842, they began to assemble a notable collection of watercolours for their Souvenir Albums, recording the places they had seen. After the Prince's death, a number of artists were summoned back to Balmoral to paint pictures that would preserve memories of happier days. The Queen's watercolours of the Highlands provided her with a constant source of pleasure and the creation of this collection is the central theme of Delia Millar's book.

Balmoral written by Ronald Clark and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-09-28 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

First published in 1981, this is Ronald Clark's engagingly readable account of Queen Victoria's relationship with "Our dear Balmoral" and the life that went on there. The biography of Balmoral begins with the first visit to Scotland of the young Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert in 1842. Five years later, while bad weather envelops the Royal party in western Scotland, the son of the Queen's physician, convalescing in Old Balmoral, reports blazing sunshine from Upper Deeside. The death of his host shortly afterwards opens the way for the Royal acquisition of the Balmoral estate and the building of the new Castle in 1853-55. In the period up to Albert's death in 1861 Balmoral becomes the setting for many of the Royal couple's happiest moments as they revel in the beauties of the scenery, relish the picturesque pageantry of Highland life, enjoy their incognito expeditions into the surrounding country, and - in Albert's case - discover a passionate enthusiasm for deer-stalking. After the Prince Consort's death Balmoral becomes a mausoleum of memories, but also a source of strength enabling the Queen to survive her devastating loss. About the time of the Golden Jubilee of 1887 there is an Indian summer, with members of the Queen's extensive family rallying round and dances and entertainments displacing some of the black-crepe gloom. In 1896 there is the colorful visit of the Tsar, with his wife and daughter. The closing section links Victorian Balmoral with the life of the Castle today.

Empress written by Miles Taylor and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-02 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

An entirely original account of Victoria's relationship with the Raj, which shows how India was central to the Victorian monarchy from as early as 1837 In this engaging and controversial book, Miles Taylor shows how both Victoria and Albert were spellbound by India, and argues that the Queen was humanely, intelligently, and passionately involved with the country throughout her reign and not just in the last decades. Taylor also reveals the way in which Victoria's influence as empress contributed significantly to India's modernization, both political and economic. This is, in a number of respects, a fresh account of imperial rule in India, suggesting that it was one of Victoria's successes.

A Scottish lost treasures collection of three classic Scottish travelogues, each offering a superbly descriptive narrative. Bundled by subject matter rather than author, the books create a compelling trilogy. "Palimpsest's eClassics series, Scottish Lost Treasures, shows us how much poorer Britain's cultural heritage would be without Scottish writers ... The best example I've seen of how curation and presentation can bring old books to new audiences" - The Observer "This strikes me as a fantastic venture, and one I hope will expand further" - Professor Willy Maley, University of Glasgow, Scotland on Sunday
