A photographic journey of the Queensferry Crossing bridge being built. On August 3rd 2012 my Dad and I decided that we would take our first photographs of the 'new bridge' on the Firth of Forth, which was in its first stages of construction. At the time, everyone referred to it as the 'new bridge' because it was yet to receive it's name of 'Queensferry Crossing'.The Queensferry Crossing is a cable-stayed bridge measuring 2700 metres in length. The idea to begin this series of photographs was my Dad's and I can't take too much credit for it because he has been a bit more dedicated to it over the past 5 years than I have. This is the longest photo project either of us have ever challenged ourselves to do and it's been a wonderful journey to work on something like this with my Dad.We have spent many days throughout all the seasons to show the progression of the construction in a way that flows from the first image to the last. The photographs in this series show our evolution through different cameras from: Nikon, Canon, Fujifilm and Leica - but, more personally for us, they show our progression as photographers and our journey as a father and daughter photographic duo. It's always incredible to look through a series like this and we can't quite believe how quickly the time has past. We hope you enjoy this series, which depicts a historical landmark of engineering marvel and shows the construction of the third bridge of the Firth of Forth, Scotland - connecting the Lothians to Fife.- Lauren & Andrew

High Performance And Optimum Design Of Structures And Materials V written by S. Hernandez and has been published by WIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-09-13 with Technology & Engineering categories.

The use of novel materials and new structural concepts nowadays is not restricted to highly technical areas like aerospace, aeronautical applications or the automotive industry, but affects all engineering fields including those such as civil engineering and architecture. The included contributions highlight the latest developments in design and manufacturing. Most high-performance structures require the development of a generation of new materials, which can more easily resist a range of external stimuli or react in a non-conventional manner. Particular emphasis is placed on intelligent structures and materials as well as the application of computational methods for their modelling, control and management. The book also addresses the topic of design optimisation. Contributions cover numerical methods, different optimisation techniques and new software. Optimisation problems include those related to the size, shape and topology of structures and materials. Optimisation techniques have much to offer to those involved in the design of new industrial products, as the appearance of powerful commercial computer codes has created a fertile field for the incorporation of optimisation in the design process of all engineering disciplines. The performance of structures under shock and impact loads is another area covered. The increasing need to protect civilian infrastructure and industrial facilities against unintentional loads arising from accidental impact and explosion events as well as terrorist attacks is reflected in the sustained interest worldwide. While advances have been made in recent decades, many challenges remain, such as developing more effective and efficient blast and impact mitigation approaches or assessing the uncertainties associated with large and small scale testing and validation of numerical and analytical models. The overall aim is to move towards a better understanding of the critical issues relating to the testing behaviour, modelling and analyses of protective structures against blast and impact loading. The studies contained in this volume were presented at the International Conference on High Performance and Optimum Structures and Materials Encompassing Shock and Impact Loading and address issues involving advanced types of structures, particularly those based on new concepts, and shock and impact resistance.

About Britain written by Tim Cole and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-06-10 with Travel categories.

A captivating glimpse of Britain then and now, seen from behind the steering wheel. In 1951, the Festival of Britain commissioned a series of short guides they dubbed 'handbooks for the explorer'. Their aim was to encourage readers to venture out beyond the capital and on to 'the roads and the by-roads' to see Britain as a 'living country'. Yet these thirteen guides did more than celebrate the rural splendour of this 'island nation': they also made much of Britain's industrial power and mid-century ambition – her thirst for new technologies, pride in manufacturing and passion for exciting new ways to travel by road, air and sea. Armed with these About Britain guides, historian Tim Cole takes to the roads to find out what has changed and what has remained the same over the 70 years since they were first published. From Oban to Torquay, Caernarvon to Cambridge, he explores the visible changes to our landscape, and the more subtle social and cultural shifts that lie beneath. In a starkly different era where travel has been transformed by the pandemic and many are journeying closer to home, About Britain is a warm and timely meditation on our changing relationship with the landscape, industry and transport. As he looks out on vineyards and apple orchards, power stations and slate mines, vast greenhouses and fulfilment centres for online goods, Cole provides an enchanting look at twentieth and early twenty-first century Britain.

During the Industrial Revolution, Britain was at the forefront of bridge innovation. Pioneering designers such as George and Robert Stephenson, Thomas Telford and Isambard Kingdom Brunel created Britain's rich bridge heritage that features many world firsts and we can learn much from their ground-breaking designs. Written by an experienced bridge architect, this book includes an introduction to bridge aesthetics; it gives an outline of British bridge development and advice on parapet treatment and bridge lighting. This book offers a comprehensive overview of how the best of British bridges marry aesthetic considerations with engineering ingenuity.
