How do queer texts engage traditional perceptions of family, nation, and the literary canon? How do readers and writers connect with their predecessors? Natasha Tanna explores lesbian and queer desire through three authors based in Barcelona, a key locus of queer cultural production. Her analysis of the Catalan Maria-Mercè Marçal (1952-1998), of Montevideo-born Cristina Peri Rossi (1941-), and of Buenos Aires-born Flavia Company (1963-) disrupts linear conceptions of time and challenges the centrality of textual and authorial origin to national literary historiographies. Whereas conventional understandings of genealogy emphasise a continuous line of inheritance traced from an origin, Tanna highlights the collaborative creation in these authors' fragmented, transnational genealogies. A queer bringing together of disparate fragments suggests how we might navigate difference in an increasingly entwined, yet ever more fractious, world in which notions of 'pure' or 'simple' origins are often violently at odds with disordered and disorderly relationships between people, nations, and texts. Natasha Tanna is a Lecturer in Spanish at Christ's College, University of Cambridge.

What does it mean to queer a concept? If queerness is a notion that implies a destabilization of the normativity of the body, then all cultural systems contain zones of discomfort relevant to queer studies. What then might we make of such zones when the use of the term queer itself has transcended the fields of sex and gender, becoming a metaphor for addressing such cultural phenomena as hybridization, resignification, and subversion? Further still, what should we make of it when so many people are reluctant to use the term queer, because they view it as theoretical colonialism, or a concept that loses its specificity when applied to a culture that signifies and uses the body differently? Translating the Queer focuses on the dissemination of queer knowledge, concepts, and representations throughout Latin America, a migration that has been accompanied by concomitant processes of translation, adaptation, and epistemological resistance.

The dissertation examines the genealogy that connects iconic works of transatlantic queer modernism with contemporary queer cultural production, asking broadly: How are current textual articulations of queerness informed by the simultaneous emergence in the early twentieth century of visible nonheteronormative cultural identities and new modes of artistic representation that reject mimetic realism? To answer this question, I examine films--Looking for Langston (dir. Isaac Julien, UK, 1988), Velvet Goldmine (dir. Todd Haynes, US/UK, 1998), Orlando (dir. Sally Potter, UK, 1992), and Brother to Brother (dir. Rodney Evans, US, 2004)--that prominently use readings of modernist literary works to negotiate queer public visibility in their own time. Through this cross-century framing, I engage with recent debates in the field about queer temporality, futurity, and models for the social reproduction of queer identities. I argue that the stylized unintelligibility of these texts enables the accumulation of intense affective investments, as an example of what Elizabeth Freeman has termed "temporal drag." This passing on of style rather than identity affects a change to traditional genealogy based on heterosexual reproduction, producing instead a perverse genealogy that visualizes the longevity of queer cultural formations, even as it destabilizes the notion of fixed sexual identity.
