This book explores intersections of theory and practice to engage queer theory and education as it happens both in and beyond the university. Furthering work on queer pedagogy, this volume brings together educators and activists who explore how we see, write, read, experience, and, especially, teach through the fluid space of queerness. The editors and contributors are interested in how queer-identified and -influenced people create ideas, works, classrooms, and other spaces that vivify relational and (eco)systems thinking, thus challenging accepted hierarchies, binaries, and hegemonies that have long dominated pedagogy and praxis.

This book invites readers to explore the critical interruptions occasioned by queer pedagogies. Building on earlier scholarly work in this area, as well as pedagogical production arising out of queer activism, the chapters in this volume examine a broad range of themes as they collectively grapple with the meaning and practice of queer pedagogy across different contexts. In this way, Queer Pedagogies provides a glance at new ways of thinking about and acting on contemporary educational topics and debates situated at the intersection of queer studies and education. In taking up the concept of queer pedagogy, the volume provides ample opportunities for scholars, educators, activists, and other cultural workers to critically engage with ongoing questions of theory, praxis, and politics.

ABSTRACT: This is a qualitative piece of research using content analysis from a phenomenological perspective. I work with two published books, an anthology, and a series of interviews; an interview that I conducted; observations gleaned from working in the field; and newsgroup letters from a local newspaper. My intent is to look at how selfhood is constructed through making meaning within one's experiences. Thus, queer praxis is how we understand ourselves through our experiences in our life worlds.

The how and now of 21st century social justice work in the United States is characterized by politicized healing and creative embodied abolitionist praxis. This suggests that our liberation and political movements are inseparable from our intimate relationship to Spirit, ancestors, the natural world, self, and community. What distinguishes this approach from preceding movements for Black liberation is its explicit centering of queerness, healing, the body, and a focus on collective interventions that disrupt systems of historical violence and harm and replace them with systems of community care. Introduced as Movements - short thematic concepts that emphasize core Black queer feminist practices and intentional action - the stories, rituals, and tools presented in this dissertation intervene and disrupt current and historical systems of harm and settler-colonial oppression. These practices center the laborious work of practitioners who are caring, creating, and holding space for themselves and the community. My study explores the work of Black and queer mothers, healers, and artists residing in Chicago, IL through ten in-depth interviews, one Kitchen Table Cypher (a co-designed group dialogue), and participatory dreaming and observations. Building on the foundational work of scholars and community practitioners such as Alexis Pauline Gumbs and Prentis Hemphill, I introduce an original lens, Creative Afro-Queer Ecology (C.A.Q.E) to activate the theoretical, applied, and methodological concepts of four elements of healing justice: creative embodied pedagogies, Afro-futurism and Sankofa, Black queer feminism, and ecological perspectives. Through three Movements - "The Body," "Water," and "Cycles, Circles, and Cyphers" - I conclude with a conversation about what this means for our collective movements in healing justice, suggesting that the framework requires that we apply praxis from Black queer people and includes spiritual and ritualistic elements.

Singapore remains one of the few countries in Asia that has yet to decriminalize homosexuality. Yet it has also been hailed by many as one of the emerging gay capitals of Asia. This book accounts for the rise of mediated queer cultures in Singapore's current milieu of illiberal citizenship. This collection analyses how contemporary queer Singapore has emerged against a contradictory backdrop of sexual repression and cultural liberalisation. Using the innovative framework of illiberal pragmatism, established and emergent local scholars and activists provide expansive coverage of the impact of homosexuality on Singapore's media cultures and political economy, including law, religion, the military, literature, theatre, photography, cinema, social media and queer commerce. It shows how new LGBT subjectivities have been fashioned through the governance of illiberal pragmatism, how pragmatism is appropriated as a form of social and critical democratic action, and how cultural citizenship is forged through a logic of queer complicity that complicates the flows of oppositional resistance and grassroots appropriation.

Praxis And Revolution written by Eva von Redecker and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-24 with Philosophy categories.

The concept of revolution marks the ultimate horizon of modern politics. It is instantiated by sites of both hope and horror. Within progressive thought, “revolution” often perpetuates entrenched philosophical problems: a teleological philosophy of history, economic reductionism, and normative paternalism. At a time of resurgent uprisings, how can revolution be reconceptualized to grasp the dynamics of social transformation and disentangle revolutionary practice from authoritarian usurpation? Eva von Redecker reconsiders critical theory’s understanding of radical change in order to offer a bold new account of how revolution occurs. She argues that revolutions are not singular events but extended processes: beginning from the interstices of society, they succeed by gradually rearticulating social structures toward a new paradigm. Developing a theoretical account of social transformation, Praxis and Revolution incorporates a wide range of insights, from the Frankfurt School to queer theory and intersectionality. Its revised materialism furnishes prefigurative politics with their social conditions and performative critique with its collective force. Von Redecker revisits the French Revolution to show how change arises from struggle in everyday social practice. She illustrates the argument through rich literary examples—a ménage à trois inside a prison, a radical knitting circle, a queer affinity group, and petitioners pleading with the executioner—that forge a feminist, open-ended model of revolution. Praxis and Revolution urges readers not only to understand revolutions differently but also to situate them elsewhere: in collective contexts that aim to storm manifold Bastilles—but from within.
