Nel ricordo di Azar Nafisi, rientrata in patria proprio nel 1979, l’anno della rivoluzione di Khomeini, la parola che più di frequente ricorreva nelle riflessioni sul nuovo destino che incombeva su di lei era «confisca»: la Repubblica islamica aveva infatti confiscato la storia dell’Iran, la sua cultura e la sua tradizione, e insieme l’identità di ogni individuo. Esiliata in patria, prigioniera di un regime totalitario ostile a tutto ciò che lasciasse spazio all’unicità, lacerata da un sentimento di irrealtà, abbandono e isolamento, Azar Nafisi non poteva che tornare all’amato Nabokov, e condividere con i suoi studenti l’esperienza di un rapporto improntato a un’esaltante reciprocità, giacché via via che si immerge nell’universo di uno scrittore il lettore non fa che arricchirlo di una percezione nuova, di una nuova dimensione. È nato così un libro tanto affascinante e singolare da ricordare alcuni ritratti dotati di coperchio del Rinascimento: il ritratto di Nabokov – frutto di un’analisi delle sue opere che sembra rispondere all’auspicio formulato in «Lezioni di letteratura»: «Leggendo, dovremmo prestare attenzione ai particolari, coccolarli» – cela infatti quello della realtà dell’Iran di allora, ma «andando oltre l’Iran, portando alla luce la mentalità totalitaristica in generale e i suoi bersagli».

Questo volume – che inaugura la pubblicazione in formato elettronico delle Opere complete di Bruno Leoni – include tutte le 408 recensioni scritte per la rivista “Il Politico” nel corso di un decennio (1950-1959). A sorprendere non è soltanto l’elevato numero di recensioni, ma anche la diversità degli argomenti trattati: dalla psichiatria all’arte, dalla religione alla letteratura, dall’archeologia alle civiltà orientali, dalla storia all’architettura, oltre naturalmente alla politica, all’economia e al diritto. Si tratta di un testo utile per due motivi in particolare. Da un lato per capire meglio il pensiero di Leoni, poiché in queste recensioni i suoi riferimenti culturali vengono esplicitati e si chiarisce bene quale fosse la sua concezione della politica, della filosofia e della società. Dall’altro esso consente di farsi un’idea sugli argomenti di cui (non) si discuteva in Italia negli anni Cinquanta. “Il Politico” – fondato dallo stesso Leoni nel 1950 – fu infatti un mirabile tentativo di innovare la cultura italiana e in queste recensioni, che sono per la maggior parte di libri stranieri, l’Autore suggerisce traduzioni e propone idee e argomenti in Italia allora poco conosciuti, o spesso conosciuti male.Le recensioni non sono mai banali, e anzi vi emerge con chiarezza quali siano le valutazioni, le idee e in generale il pensiero di Leoni. Fare esplorazioni in campi così diversi e saperne trarre vantaggio nell’elaborazione di idee nel proprio settore di ricerca richiede indubbiamente un’intelligenza e una cultura fuori dall'ordinario. Ma questo era il suo approccio metodologico: le scienze umane gli apparivano intimamente connesse e solo da una loro trattazione comune era convinto di poter trovare la soluzione ai problemi sociali.

This book approaches opera fantasias – instrumental works that use themes from a single opera as the body of their virtuosic and flamboyant material – both historically and theoretically, concentrating on compositions for and by woodwind-instrument performers in Italy in the nineteenth century. Important overlapping strands include the concept of virtuosity and its gradual demonization, the strong gendered overtones of individual woodwind instruments and of virtuosity, the distinct Italian context of these fantasias, the presentation and alteration of opera narratives in opera fantasias, and the technical and social development of woodwind instruments. Like opera itself, the opera fantasia is a popular art form, stylistically predictable yet formally flexible, based heavily on past operatic tradition and prefabricated materials. Through archival research in Italy, theoretical analysis, and exploration of European cultural contexts, this book clarifies a genre that has been consciously stifled and societal resonances that still impact music reception and performance today.

As a writer, Carlo Levi has had the misfortune to be known as the author of one book, Christ Stopped at Eboli, the account of his years of internal banishment by the Fascist authorities to a remote village in the south of Italy.
