Auf der )lehre Gottes oder der lehre Moses worunter der Pentateuch ver standen wird. Der hebräische Ausdruck dafür ist mm (thora). Wenn derselbe im jüdischen Hellenismus mit wi, ung, gesetz wiedergegeben wurde, so drückt diese von der Rücksicht auf die griechische Anschauung eingegebene Uebersetzung nicht sowohl die Wortbedeutung, als vielmehr die Sachbedeutung der hebräischen Bezeichnung aus. Thatsächlich allerdings bildete die Thora für das Volk Israel und nachmals für die Juden das Gesetzbuch, wie in religiöser Hinsicht noch heute, trotzdem war die Bezeichnung der Thora als vö, aog kein glücklicher Einfall. Denn der christliche Hellenismus hat diese Bezeichnung aufgenommen, und, durch ein seitige Betonung derselben, verschuldet, dass der Thora eine ein seitige, also falsche Bedeutung beigelegt wurde. Demgemass wurde ihr äusserlicher Charakter als eines Gesetzbuches mit ihrem in neren Wesen und Zweck verwechselt, und es wurde angenommen, dass die Thora nur auf Ausbildung einer starren Gesetzlich keit ausgehe. Dieser Auflassung steht schon die etymologische Bedeutung des Wortes entgegen. Thora bedeutet immer nur >lehre, wie das Stammwort mm lehren bedeutet, und es giebt nicht bloss im Pentateuch, sondern im ganzen Alten Testament auch nicht eine Stelle, an welcher thora mit gesetz wiedergegeben wer den müsste, oder selbst nur, genau genommen, wiedergegeben werden dürfte I). Für )gesetzc im eigentlichen und strengen Sinne des Wortes hat das alte Hebräisch die Bezeichnungen >choq, Chuqqac (pn, npn) welche sehr häufig neben dem Worte Thora in der Weise vorkommen, dass beide Kategorien dadurch ausdrücklich von einander unterschieden werden weshalb denn auch von einem gesetz der Thorax gesprochen wird, ohne dass diese Redewen dung als Pleonasmus bezeichnet werden könnte.
