The Queen S Library written by Cynthia J. Brown and has been published by University of Pennsylvania Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06-06 with Literary Criticism categories.

What do the physical characteristics of the books acquired by elite women in the late medieval and early modern periods tell us about their owners, and what in particular can their illustrations—especially their illustrations of women—reveal? Centered on Anne, duchess of Brittany and twice queen of France, with reference to her contemporaries and successors, The Queen's Library examines the cultural issues surrounding female modes of empowerment and book production. The book aims to uncover the harmonies and conflicts that surfaced in male-authored, male-illustrated works for and about women. In her interdisciplinary investigation of the cultural and political legacy of Anne of Brittany and her female contemporaries, Cynthia J. Brown argues that the verbal and visual imagery used to represent these women of influence was necessarily complex because of its inherently conflicting portrayal of power and subordination. She contends that it can be understood fully only by drawing on the intersection of pertinent literary, historical, codicological, and art historical sources. In The Queen's Library, Brown examines depictions of women of power in five spheres that tellingly expose this tension: rituals of urban and royal reception; the politics of female personification allegories; the "famous-women" topos; women in mourning; and women mourned.

Debate And Dialogue written by Emma Cayley and has been published by Clarendon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-09-28 with Literary Criticism categories.

In early humanist France two debating traditions converge: one literary and vernacular, one intellectual and conducted mainly via Latin epistles. Debate and Dialogue demonstrates how the two fuse in the vernacular verse debates of Alain Chartier, secretary and notary at the court of Charles VI, and later, Charles VII. In spite of considerable contemporary praise for Chartier, his work has remained largely neglected by modern critics. This study shows how Chartier participates in a movement that invests a vernacular poetic with moral and political significance, inspiring such social engagements as the fifteenth-century poetic exchange known as the Querelle de la Belle Dame sans mercy. Emma Cayley sets Chartier in the context of a late-medieval debating climate through the use of a new model of participatory poetics which she terms the collaborative debating community. This is a dynamic and generative social grouping based on Brian Stock's model of the textual community, as well as Pierre Bourdieu's sociological categories of field, habitus, and capital. This dialectical model takes account of the socio-cultural context of literary production, and suggests the fundamentally competitive yet collaborative nature of late-medieval poetry. Cayley draws an analogy here between literary debates and game-playing, engaging with the game theory of Johan Huizinga and Roger Caillois, and discusses the manuscript context of such literary debates as the materialization of this poetic game. The collaborative debating community postulated affords unique insights into the dynamics of late-medieval compositional and reading practices.

Fifteenth Century Studies written by Edelgard E. DuBruck and has been published by Camden House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-03 with History categories.

Founded in 1977 as the publication organ for the Fifteenth-Century Symposium, Fifteenth-Century Studies has appeared annually since then. It publishes essays on all aspects of life in the fifteenth century, including literature, drama, history, philosophy, art, music, religion, science, and ritual and custom. The editors strive to do justice to the most contested medieval century, a period that is the stepchild of research. The period defies consensus on fundamental issues: some dispute, in fact, whether the fifteenth century belonged at all to the middle ages, arguing that it was a period of transition, a passage to modern times. At issue, therefore, is the very tenor of an age that stood under the tripartite influence of Gutenberg, the Turks, and Columbus. Volume 26 contains the customary survey of research on late-medieval drama. There are six articles on French literature, four on German topics, two on Italian art, one on Spanish medieval predication, and three on English literary matters. Six of the articles focus on women and misogyny. Further topics include: popular approaches to problems of daily living; the crusades and mysticism; an early warning against excess in travel and exploration; the conduct of princes as described in chronicles; the so-called Pope Joan; theater, including farces, passion pageants, and triumphant entries of princes; critique of the estates; the function of authors, and their rights, duties, and privileges. There are 17 book reviews and two obituary dedications. The volume has been assembled with special care for style, excellence of research, and variety of approaches. Edelgard DuBruck is professor emerita of Modern Languages at Marygrove College, Detroit, Michigan. Barbara Gusick is professor emerita of English at Troy University-Dothan, Dothan, Alabama.
