First Published in 2018. Routledge is an imprint of Taylor & Francis, an Informa company. What Makes a Good Health Care System? Examines the various assumptions that underpin the different views of what makes a good health care system. The national systems in the UK, Australia and Canada are thoroughly examined. Each country has a different view of what a good health care system is trying to achieve, and the book elucidates these by highlighting key policy documents and comments from key stakeholders. Case studies emphasise the diverse needs and expectations of individuals, examining and comparing concepts of health needs, quality as a measure of 'good-ness' and the various ideas on Gold Standards. This book will be valuable reading for all healthcare managers and clinicians with management responsibilities, as well as policy makers and shapers and all those with a general interest in health.

How good is the quality of health care in the United States? Is quality improving? Or is it suffering? While the average person on the street can follow the state of the economy with economic indicators, we do not have a tool that allows us to track trends in health care quality. Beginning in 2003, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) will produce an annual report on the national trends in the quality of health care delivery in the United States. AHRQ commissioned the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to help develop a vision for this report that will allow national and state policy makers, providers, consumers, and the public at large to track trends in health care quality. Envisioning the National Health Care Quality Report offers a framework for health care quality, specific examples of the types of measures that should be included in the report, suggestions on the criteria for selecting measures, as well as advice on reaching the intended audiences. Its recommendations could help the national health care quality report to become a mainstay of our nation's effort to improve health care.

Solutions To The Healthcare Quality Crisis written by Søren Bisgaard and has been published by Quality Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-02-06 with Medical categories.

Healthcare around the world is in crisis as a result of complex structural and strategic problems that will require solutions at a very high level. This book demonstrates that effective solutions based on modern quality management principles can be applied to alleviate many problems locally within healthcare institutions. It is designed to support doctors, nurses, technicians, and administrators who are interested in applying quality management principles and the tools of Lean Six Sigma to improve healthcare within their own institutions. The book should also be of interest to politicians, policy makers and government officials wrestling with healthcare issues. The book presents a wide selection of examples of the applications of Lean Six Sigma originally published in two of ASQ’s journals, Quality Progress and Six Sigma Forum Magazine over the past few years. Each case illustrates some aspect of how to improve quality and reduce waste in healthcare institutions, whether in the direct delivery of healthcare or on the equally important administrative side. Some of the cases are from large metropolitan hospitals and others are from smaller institutions. Most of the cases show what has worked, while a few show pitfalls or obstacles to be avoided. Chapter 1 presents some of the basic notions of Lean Six Sigma quality management, explains key concepts and terminology, and makes the reading of the cases easier. The introduction is followed by Chapter 2 presenting six articles of a general nature written by healthcare professionals from a variety of healthcare institutions engaged in quality improvement: how they achieved their results and what they learned. Chapter 3 provides eight detailed cases that describe specific applications of Lean Six Sigma to healthcare. Finally, Chapter 4 provides a discussion of lessons learned and where we go from here. This book is specifically intended for healthcare professionals with no previous background, knowledge, or experience with Lean Six Sigma. More broadly, it should be of interest to anyone interested in healthcare quality: doctors, nurses, pharmacists, technicians, healthcare administrators, consultants, concerned citizens, politicians, policy analysts, government officials, etc. These cases from American and European healthcare organizations of the use of Lean Six Sigma are documented by pioneering front line healthcare professionals ─ doctors, nurses and healthcare administrators ─ willing to take personal responsibility and show leadership to improve quality and reduce the escalating costs of healthcare. This book is not about theory. It is a book for doers, showing healthcare providers how to do it. It shows how they can take their destiny in their hands and do something about healthcare quality and costs.

Healthcare is a fragmented service with high variance in quality from hospital to hospital and physician to physician. Often, poor management of hospitals contributes to undesired outcomes. The ‘clinical silos’ from where services are delivered lacks an integrated approach to converge all related specialists around the patient. Patient satisfaction is never a unit of measurement of effectiveness in hospitals. Patients are not routinely engaged in decision making and often communication with relatives is established on the eve of a catastrophic event, either convince them to plead their helplessness. This book reveals the internal performance dimensions that are crucial to improve clinical outcomes. The performance enabling framework is an innovative model for any hospital to adapt. The book brings out with clarity what constitutes ‘value’ in the patients’ perspective. The book convincingly argues that appropriate treatment, which is non-negotiable combined with affordability and patient satisfaction are the three dimensions that will create value in healthcare services.

Companion to Primary Care Mental Health is the result of a major collaboration of an international group of general practitioners, psychiatrists, policy-makers, mental health professionals and mental health advocates. This extraordinary guide provides the best available evidence for the management of patients with mental health conditions in primary care. It draws on the wisdom of a range of experts from primary and secondary care, who have translated information from the literature and their own clinical experience to apply it across the globe to everyday family practice. With the emphasis on practical application it presents family doctors and their teams with the evidence-based knowledge necessary to support the development of fully integrated systems to promote good mental health using tables and figures to illustrate complex matters. This includes the need to harness the wider determinants of health and mental health and to tackle stigma through advocacy, spirituality and ethical practice. The role of public health and the management of the many interfaces associated with providing good mental health are also covered. It includes tools for assessment, including classification and risk assessment, and the general principles required to enable a biopsychosocial approach to care. The book also considers the individual mental health conditions that family doctors and their teams are likely to encounter. As comorbidity and the management of complexity are very common in primary care mental health, these are also explored in the final chapters of the book.

In recent years the professions have undergone radical transformation. With the advent of rapidly changing markets, more sophisticated and demanding clients, deregulation and increased competition, the generalist professional partnerships have given way to larger, more corporate forms of organization, comprising increasingly autonomous specialist business units. This volume critically examines these changes through an examination of the archetypes which characterize accounting, health care and law practitioners. With examples drawn from Australia, Canada, the UK and the USA, Restructuring the Professional Organization will be of interest to all students of organization studies seeking to understand the issues and problems confronting the professions as they move to the new millennium. Topics covered include: * a review of the models of professional organization *drivers of change in professional organizations * internal dynamics of changes in these organizations * new organizational forms and archetypes.
