After the veritable hype concerning postmodernism in the 1980s and early 1990s, when questions about when it began, what it means and which texts it comprises were apt to trigger heated discussions, the excitement has notably cooled down at the turn of the century. Voices are now beginning to be heard which seem to suggest a new episteme in the making which points beyond postmodernism, while it remains at the same time very uncertain whether what appears as newness is not rather a return to traditional concepts, theoretical premises, and authorial practices. The Faustian Motif in the Tragedies by Christopher Marlowe discusses the argument that the pact with demonic forces, and/or its consequences, is a motif explored not only in Doctor Faustus, but in Marlowe’s other plays as well (Tamburlaine the Great, Dido, Queen of Carthage, The Jew of Malta). The book sets out to explore the way Marlowe explained this process, from play to play, in psychological and cultural terms, and to demonstrate its relevance for modern man and his culture. The text is divided into the Introduction and four main parts, each focusing on a particular aforementioned play by Marlowe. The book does not follow the actual chronological order in which these plays are supposed to have been written, not because it is uncertain, but for the obvious reason suggested by the nature of the theme: the text begins with Dr. Faustus because it is the only way to introduce and discuss the possible symbolic meanings of the act of selling one’s soul to the Devil. It ends with The Jew of Malta because in the world of Marlowe’s Malta – closest perhaps to our own in its mindless pursuit of profit – the major protagonists no longer have any soul to lose or to renounce. The method used in the book is wide-ranging and eclectic: besides relying on some permanently valid ideas of Humanist criticism, the book also offers insights into the views of the New Critics, particularly their requirement of the close reading of the literary works chosen for examination. Their approach is combined here with that of the New Historicists, who provided a corrective to the New Critic’s formalism by insisting on the importance of taking into consideration the historical and cultural context the work belongs to. The book will appeal to both scholars and students interested in the field of the English Renaissance literature, and also to a wider reading audience keen on observing, detecting and understanding the cultural processes equally relevant for the history of the English Renaissance period and present–day Western society.

This book offers an integrated interpretative analysis of the major thematic aspects of the English fourteenth-century romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The chief aim of author Piotr Sadowski is to look at the contents of the narrative in their entirety and to take full advantage of the poem's exceptional and widely praised harmony of structure and design. Within that design, Sadowski focuses on the poem's presentation of the main protagonist and his adventures, seen first of all as a generalized metaphor of the human life understood as a spiritual quest, and, in a more historical sense, as an expression and critique of certain ideals, values, and anxieties that characterized the late medieval institutions of the court, chivalry, and the Church. It appears that literary work possesses eternal temporal validity due to its autonomous aesthetic value, whereas criticism provides points of view having temporary and transitory significance. Despite such claims, the vector of methodology in our series of books, dealing with the history of English literature, relies on Viktor Shklovsky, T. S. Eliot, Mikhail Bakhtin, and especially Yuri Tynyanov, whose main reasoning would be that literature is a system of dominant, central and peripheral, marginalized elements – to us, “tradition” (centre) versus “innovation” (margin) engaged in a “battle” for supremacy, demarginalization, and the right to form a new literary system – and the development or historical advancement of literature is the substitution of systems. Roman Jakobson and French structuralism, on the whole, later Linda Hutcheon, with her “system” and “constant”, and Bran Nicol with the “dominant”, to say nothing about Itamar Even-Zohar and his theory of polysystem, to a certain extent Julia Kristeva, and even Homi Bhabha – as well as our humble contribution, by means of the books in the present series, we would like to believe – maintain Tynyanov’s line of thinking and concepts alive, which have developed and emerged nowadays more like a kind of “neo-formalism”.

This book analyzes the Faerie Queene's setting, examining Spenser's quest structures and his ideas about epic, romance, and history. Critics almost invariably treat Spenser's Faeryland as coextensive with the world of the poem, but this is not the case; rather, Faeryland is part of an epic cosmos reaching from heaven and the abode of the classical deities to demonic underground realms. Spenser situates Faeryland within a specific spatial and temporal terrestrial geography in which locations outside Faeryland represent various heroic settings in political history. The politico-historical world built around Faeryland is ripe for analysis by contemporary historicist critics. Spenser uses political geography, in conjunction with the time-inclusive medium of Faeryland, to coordinate several transhistorical quests that create a pattern of temporal mediations among sixth-century British, 16th-century English, and biblical and prophetic versions of history. He juxtaposes chronicle history, empirical historiography, and cultural myth while manipulating genre to create a world capable of accommodating his grand romantic epic design. In mapping the world of The Faerie Queene, the book provides a widened context for Spenser's quest structures, a significant contribution to the study of the poem's relation to history, and a new perspective from which to view Spenser's debts to classical epic, Italian romantic epic, and his native medieval inheritance.
