Early-modern Venice is predominantly remembered as a maritime power, yet historians have become increasingly interested in its political and military aspirations within the Italian mainland. Adding to the growing literature on this subject, Giulio Ongaro’s book addresses the practical management of the Venetian military apparatus in this period. Focusing on two provinces - Vicenza and Brescia - he interrogates a broad spectrum of primary source documents produced by these rural communities that illuminate Venetian military activities between the mid-sixteenth century and the end of the War of Candia in 1670. From the production of the saltpeter, the construction of the fortresses, the supplying and the training of the rural militia and the quartering of troops, this book shows how essential military activities were managed and overseen at the local level. In so doing, it demonstrates how local autonomy over the management of Venetian military apparatus - particularly from an economic point of view - did not necessarily conflict with wider, ongoing processes of state building or moves towards the centralization of particular public functions. Indeed the state appeared to encourage local élites (initially urban, then rural) to take a leading role in overseeing the localised management of military tasks. The result was a system that both supported the resilience of the local economy (both public and private), and which strengthened and improved the Republic's military assets, allowing it to remain the only Italian state free from the domination of European monarchies.

Apprenticeship in early modern Europe has been the subject of important research in the last decades, mostly by economic historians; but the majority of the research has dealt with cities or countries in Northern Europe. The organization, evolution and purpose of apprenticeship in Southern Europe are much less studied, especially for the early modern period. The research in this volume is based on a unique documentary source: more than 54,000 apprenticeship contracts registered from 1575 to 1772 by the "Old Justice", a civil court of the Republic of Venice in charge of guilds and labour disputes. An archival source of such scale provides a unique opportunity to historians, and this is the first time that primary research on apprenticeship is leveraging such a large amount of data in one of the main economic centres of early modern Europe. This book brings together multiple perspectives, including social history, economic history and art history, and is the outcome of an interdisciplinary collaboration between historians and computer scientists. In una fase di forti crisi economica e sociale, in cui i fattori materiali ed immateriali dello sviluppo si orientano sempre più ai criteri della sostenibilità, l’attenzione ai territori ed ai fattori che li distinguono e li identificano rispetto agli altri, si pone al centro di iniziative volte al rafforzamento del ruolo che essi possono esercitare per la innovazione dei processi economici e sociali che vanno ad incidere sulla ricchezza disponibile e sulla dimensione del benessere sociale delle popolazioni. Nell’ambito di un progetto di ricerca di livello nazionale sulla configurazione dei “territori intelligenti”, è stata condotta una osservazione ed una analisi dei processi di cambiamento presenti nell’area delle valli Vibrata e del Tronto, in cui fattori storici, culturali, ambientali e di patrimonio culturale si intrecciano nel tempo, riproponendosi come fattori di rilancio e di riqualificazione del processo di sviluppo economico e sociale delle popolazioni ivi residenti. Pur in quadro di riferimento, in cui aspetti negativi si intrecciano e si combinano con altri fattori più favorevoli all’avvio di nuovi processi di sviluppo locale, il caso dei territori di frontiera tra la Vibrata e il Tronto si presenta come un caso significativo in cui la crisi economica e sociale contribuisce ad accelerare i processi di cambiamento, senza ridurre le capacità di creatività e di innovazione presenti nelle popolazioni di tali territori.
