Matematica: invenzione o scoperta? Questioni matematiche per esperti e principianti è un saggio che tratta la matematica dal punto di vista della sua evoluzione, e lo fa in forma chiara e precisa. Un testo che affronta una materia che ai più risulta alquanto ostica, trasformandola, però, non solo in qualcosa di semplice e comprensibile ma mettendone in evidenza soprattutto il fascino. Il mondo della matematica è pieno di personaggi e aneddoti, di vicende e curiosità che vale la pena di scoprire. Non solo numeri, dunque, ma una storia vera e propria. L’autore nasce nel 1939 ad Anela, un piccolo paese della provincia di Sassari, tra la catena del Marghine e il massiccio del Gennargentu, con una vasta pianura ai cui margini scorre il fiume Tirso. Anela è uno dei nove paesi del Goceano –Illorai, in alto, centro agro forestale a metà della catena del Marghine; Burgos, con il castello del tempo dei Giudicati in cima ad una alta collina; sotto il castello c’è Esporlatu e Bottida, famosi centri cerealicoli, di buon vino, ciliegie e abbardente (abba=acqua); Bono, il centro più grosso del Goceano e patria di Giovan Maria Angjoi, prma Alter-Nos dei Savoia e poi rivoluzionario antifeudale, dopo la rivoluzione francese; Anela, tutto disteso a mezza collina, davanti alla pianura del Tirso e con le ‘domos de Janas’ più importanti della Sardegna; Bultei, con le tombe di giganti più importanti della zona; Benetutti, subito dopo il ponte sul Tirso, con le se famose terme sulfuree; appollaiato in alto Nule, importante centro artigianale di tappeti–, qui trascorre la sua infanzia, circondato da soldati tedeschi e italiani. A 10 anni i genitori lo mandano a Ozieri per l’esame di ammissione alla Scuola Media e lì rimane per otto anni, frequentando il Ginnasio e il Liceo Classico e rientrando in famiglia solo per le feste e le vacanze estive. Finito il Liceo, nel 1958, si iscrive alla Facoltà di Economia e Commercio a Cagliari, dove si laurea pochi anni dopo. Finito il servizio militare di leva, si ferma a Milano, dove risiede per un po’ di tempo. Rientra in Sardegna dopo qualche anno e diventa insegnante di Matematica e Osservazioni Scientifiche alle scuole medie. A metà del percorso lavorativo ha anche incontrato l’amore e oggi è padre e nonno, con tanta voglia di vivere.

In 1202, a 32-year old Italian finished one of the most influential books of all time, which introduced modern arithmetic to Western Europe. Devised in India in the seventh and eighth centuries and brought to North Africa by Muslim traders, the Hindu-Arabic system helped transform the West into the dominant force in science, technology, and commerce, leaving behind Muslim cultures which had long known it but had failed to see its potential.
