The approach to work on "The Satanic Verses" and his latest publication "Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights" (2015) tries to (critically) reflect Rushdie's development as a writer within the time span of almost three decades. Twenty-seven years for a writer and his community might be an eternity since the world has tremendously changed since then. Rushdie himself, however, in both novels sticks to major themes of his interest. Among them are the parameters used here. Identity, metamorphosis and (religious) fanaticism can be found in both novels and it is the focus on these three which will be central here. To do so not only helps to reflect major literary topics Rushdie is concerned about it also shows the development these matters have taken within Rushdie' s literary work and the world it reflects. In is exactly the historical framework which Rushdie uses which helps to understand his literary attempt because he said in an interview with the German magazine "Stern" in 2015 that he understands himself as an author who lives in a certain period of time and who therefore has to write about it. The dualistic concept that links the narrative in both novels analysed here must also be seen in this historical framework. Rushdie sees modern man in a globalized world as homeless, hybrid, bound to metamorphosis, caught between the rational and the irrational yet open for positive options which he can choose provided he uses his freedom. So identity, metamorphosis, religion and fundamentalism are closely connected to personal freedom and it will thus be interesting to see how Rushdie's ideas have been worked into both novels. The structure of this book is therefore as follows: A first part will consist in some sort of background information on Rushdie and his position in contemporary English literature. A second major part will consist in a short introduction of the postcolonial setting. This helps to place Rushdie's work in a literary background. A next step lies in a closer analysis of chosen parameters such as the use of the hybrid Islamic spirituality, transcendence, identity formation, failure and powerlessness. The next important step lies in a close interpretation of both works. This will be followed by an outlook.

It rejects some of the extremism expressed by the East but also condemns the attitude of the West. It also highlights the true teachings regarding blasphemy in Islam and proves that the edict of the Fatwa was an illegal act. The book explores the role played by the western orientalists who have been instrumental in increasing the rift between Islam and the West. It traces the animosity against Islam ever since its inception, through the barbarity of the Crusades right up to the present day. It also examines the legacy that the book has created in perpetuating a trail of similar provocative acts perpetrated in the West such as the Danish cartoons and the increasing militancy of some Muslims culminating in the acts of 9/11 and 7/7. The issue of freedom of speech has been discussed at great length which is the topic of the day. It proves how unchecked freedom can become a curse. The literary career of Salman Rushdie has been examined in great detail and this book attempts to prove that his role in the whole sordid affair was not as innocent as it is made out to be. In fact, he is shown to possess truly Mephistophelian characteristics. There is, however, a positive message for the future. Enlightened people in the West, Prince Charles among them, still offer a great opportunity of hope by presenting the real image of Islam and so contribute to narrowing the gulf between Islam and the West.

Throughout the story, Saleem, being a ‘child of ticktock’, is remorselessly rushed on (MC 533). Towards what, one might ask. His childhood memory of a ‘fisherman’s pointing finger’, on a picture hanging on his bedroom wall, haunts Saleem throughout his narration as a reminder of his ‘inescapable destiny’ (MC 167). More precisely, the fisherman is pointing towards a letter send by India’s first Prime Minister on the occasion of Saleem’s birth which coincided with the birth of India as an independent nation. With this letter, Nehru proclaims that Saleem’s life will be the ‘mirror’ of the life of all Indians (MC 167). From his birth, Saleem thus carries the burden of being a reflection of his country and its people. With this enormous responsibility imposed on him, he is pushed on through his narrative. Literally, Saleem is racing against increasingly destructive cracks that threaten to destroy his body. On a metaphorical level, he is fighting against a force beyond his power, a force that ultimately, is going to win: time. Saleem’s narrative is drenched with a sense of fatalism, of it being ‘too late’. The race is already lost, but at least he must resist his defeat as long as he can, that is, until he has brought his narrative to an end. And all the way through, we hear the threatening tick tock, always aware that the final point zero is approaching fast and could surprise us, along with Saleem, at any moment. Interestingly however, where conventional story tellers build their narratives up towards one big countdown, one decisive climax, Saleem provides us with numerous countdowns. The first one leading up to Saleem’s birth, coinciding with India’s independence and partition, followed by a countdown leading up to Saleem’s amnesia. The birth of his son and his final annihilation constitute the two last countdowns. However, these countdowns do not grant his narrative any disclosure or release, but they seem to be endlessly renewed. Once a countdown is up, a new one begins; each promising a final purpose and meaning, but each time leaving us unsatisfied.

Introduction While reading the title of Rushdie's short story cycle East, West a very important question arises in the reader's mind: does Rushdie use the comma in between the title to show the binary division of the Orient and Occident or does he want to make a bridge between East and West (Homeless Is Where the Art Is 162)? However, after in depth research on this book, it becomes clear that Rushdie goes even further than this bridging device. He not only tries to connect or mediate both the East and West, but as a traveller and migrant himself, he pokes fun at the traditional notions of Orient and Occident, employing a vast range of styles, genres, structures and techniques, finally deconstructing the binary division between East and West. In doing so, he subverts the reader's traditional assumptions about the Orient and Occident and clarifies that, in today's reality; the East and West cannot be described in such a simplistic way anymore. In Imaginary Homelands, Rushdie writes that "literature is, of all the arts, the one best suited to challenging absolutes of all kinds" (Beck: 356) this is precisely what happens in his short story cycle East, West. Nothing is "sacred" any longer, hence most of the stories in East, West can be regarded as examinations to provoke and deconstruct the inviolable of Eastern and Western culture (Beck 360). To summarise, Rushdie mocks absolutist concepts of the oriental and occidental systems. By criticizing and deconstructing traditional notions he points out that, within the global village, the East and West are closely interrelated and cannot be regarded as opposites. The current motives of religions and the religious are now rather human, unethical, biased and materialistic, and thus the emerging endemic religious issues, fuelled by ethnicity, politics, neo/colonialism, linguistic conflicts and capitalism confronting nations like Nigeria and the like over the years. This study is concerned with interrogating and exploring the foregoing problems. It maintains that a nation free from religious hypocrisy and fanaticism is bound to be truly religious and tap hugely from the rich prospects of religion, rather than the current otherwise obtained in Nigeria and the like nations. The ugly development calls for wide aggressive religious re-orientation and reformation, as this paper proposes.
