És insòlit que sent la química analítica la ciència de la mesura química, estiguen tan descurades les bases en què aquesta s'assenta i tan infrautilitzades les potencialitats que ofereixen diverses tècniques quimiomètriques de treball. El present manual planteja i discuteix aquestes bases d'una forma sistemàtica: s'enceta amb una ràpida ullada als principis de l'estadística, per a centrar-se després en algunes tècniques de l'anàlisi multivariant, atenent als seus fonaments i al procés de transformació a què es veuen sotmeses les dades experimentals en cada cas. El text està farcit de nombrosos exercicis propis del camp de la química per a ajudar a la comprensió dels fonaments i obligar a discórrer sobre l'ampli ventall de possibilitats i d'aplicacions que ofereixen els mètodes quimiomètrics, sovint infravalorats per l'analista. Carlos Mongay Fernández és doctor en Ciències Químiques i catedràtic de Química Analítica en la Universitat de València des de fa més de vint anys. En l'actualitat és director del Departament de Química Analítica. Ha publicat nombrosos articles en revistes nacionals i internacionals i ha impartit el curs de doctorat de Quimiometria com a conseqüència del qual va nàixer la necessitat aprofundir en aquesta àrea i propagar la disciplina en el vast context de la química analítica.

A quimiometria surgiu da necessidade de extrair informações químicas da profusão de dados resultantes da moderna instrumentação. Neste livro são abordados os principais métodos de tratamento de dados de natureza multivariada, iniciando com a apresentação das técnicas utilizadas na sua preparação. A seguir, são abordados os métodos de análise exploratória: análise de componentes principais (PCA) e análise de agrupamentos por métodos hierárquicos (HCA). Modelos quantitativos são construídos utilizando os métodos de regressão linear múltipla (MLR), componentes principais (PCR) e quadrados mínimos parciais (PLS). Métodos supervisionados de reconhecimentos de padrões do k-ésimo vizinho mais próximo (k-NN), SIMCA, e a análise discriminante PLS-DA são discutidos na construção dos modelos de classificação. Over the past decade, pattern recognition has been one of the fastest growth points in chemometrics. This has been catalysed by the increase in capabilities of automated instruments such as LCMS, GCMS, and NMR, to name a few, to obtain large quantities of data, and, in parallel, the significant growth in applications especially in biomedical analytical chemical measurements of extracts from humans and animals, together with the increased capabilities of desktop computing. The interpretation of such multivariate datasets has required the application and development of new chemometric techniques such as pattern recognition, the focus of this work.
