Two things are quintessential to the book of Revelation. The heart of Jesus and the heart of unconverted natural man. These are contrary to each other, yet need not be difficult to understand or identify. Jesus referred to himself as both the Son of God and the Son of Man because he had come in flesh to redeem us from the curse. Later, John stated that every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ is come in flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, of which ye have heard that it should come, and that now it is already in the world (1 John 4:3). In Revelation, Jesus, through John, takes this into much greater detail so that we can grasp the principle of what antichrist means, and how it could already be in the world in John’s day. Of course, any discussion of the antichrist also necessitates discussion of the beast and the mark of the beast. This is because the antichrist and the beast are inseparable. In God’s eyes, unconverted natural man is a beast, and the mark of the beast is the nature of the beast, which is also the nature of antichrist. If we can understand this fundamental precept, our ability to understand the Book of Revelation becomes greatly expanded. The only other requirement is that we have a clean heart before God. Sadly, many commentaries on Revelation ignore the need to have a clean heart in order to survive what’s coming. Judaism has always had adherents that, driven by both awe and love of God, strove to penetrate the mystery of divine wisdom and grasp what the philosopher deemed to be beyond the reach of man's rational faculty, as well as to explore other mysteries that seem to leap out from the pages of Scripture. These metarational leaps of intellect and imagination generally fit into the categories of the exoteric and the esoteric, referring to teachings traditionally considered suitable for public instruction and those deemed inappropriate for such purpose. From the Introduction by Merrill C. Tenney: This commentary is an attempt to make plain the meaning of Revelation. With commendable reserve, Dr. Smith has restricted himself largely to interpretation by other passages of Scripture which are related to Revelation by actual quotation or by striking parallelism. His painstaking studies of vocabulary and of related ideas make the book valuable to the earnest student of the Bible. Dr. Smith is a futurist and a premillenarian, holding that all of the Book of Revelation beginning with the fourth chapter relates to the future period of judgment known as 'the great tribulation,' which will be followed by the personal return of Christ and by the establishment of His kingdom. In this regard he is in a long line of renowned commentators, including Seiss, Gaebelein, Ottman, and others. The distinguishing feature of this commentary is its use of Biblical statistics and comparisons. The uses of important terms in the Revelation are cataloged, and their interpretation is derived from their context. The appendices contain some extensive studies of individual topics, correlating information not easily obtainable elsewhere. Dr. Smith follows a literal interpretation except where avowed symbolism demands a different procedure. He has sought to make his exposition consistent in method and in results. His use of Greek is apt, and shows a careful investigation of the underlying vocabulary of the Greek text. This commentary will probably be the mainstay of premillennial exposition for some years to come.
