John Within Judaism written by Wally V. Cirafesi and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-11 with Religion categories.
In John within Judaism, Wally V. Cirafesi offers a reading of the Gospel of John as an expression of the fluid and flexible nature of Jewish identity in Greco-Roman antiquity. While many have noted John’s general Jewishness, few have given it a seat at the ideologically congested table of ancient Jewish practice and belief. By interrogating the concept of “Judaism” in relation to the complex categories of “religion” and “ethnicity,” Cirafesi argues that John negotiates Jewishness using strategies of ethnic identity formation paralleled in other Jewish sources from the Second Temple and early rabbinic periods. In this process of negotiation, including its use of “high christology” and critique of Ioudaioi, John coalesces with other expressions of ancient Jewish identity and, thus, can be read “within Judaism.”

The Questions Of Jesus In John written by Douglas Charles Estes and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-19 with Religion categories.
Why do the New Testament gospels depict a Jesus who asks questions almost as often as he gives answers? In The Questions of Jesus in John Douglas Estes crafts a highly interdisciplinary theory of question-asking based on insights from ancient rhetoric and modern erotetics (the study of interrogatives) in order to investigate the logical and rhetorical purposes of Jesus' questions in the Gospel of John. While scholarly discussion about Jesus cares more for what he says, and not what he asks, Estes argues a better understanding of the rhetorical and dialectical roles of questions in ancient narratives sheds a more accurate light on both John’s narrative art and Jesus' message in the Fourth Gospel.

How might different voices from the global church help all Christians understand the person and work of Jesus Christ better? Written by a team of leading Majority World scholars, this joint project explores and articulates a doctrine of Christ by appealing to his threefold office as prophet, priest, and king. Thus, it considers Christology not only as a central tenet of the Christian faith but, by drawing from a variety of voices throughout the worldwide church, it also points to the unified testimony of the global, catholic church. This is the first volume in the Theology Together series, which highlights the voices of Majority World scholars, each of whom brings insights from a particular context, and places them in conversation with one another to contribute to a richer, deeper understanding of a shared faith in Christ.

Raised From The Dead According To Scripture written by Lidija Novakovic and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-29 with Religion categories.
The New Testament writings allow only limited access to the interpretative traditions that lie beneath the claim that Jesus' resurrection took place according to Scripture. This book investigates the underlying principles of scriptural arguments in relation to Jesus' resurrection and the unstated interpretative moves that govern the selection and combination of texts relating to it. Novakovic's working hypothesis is that the Davidic tradition supplied the primary scriptural categories for the claim that Jesus was raised from the dead according to Scripture. This tradition was appropriated through two major thematic trajectories: resurrection as the fulfillment of Davidic promises and resurrection as the messianic enthronement. We can also identify several related thematic trajectories, such as the concept of the resurrection as the beginning of the new creation, resurrection as the prophetic authentication, and resurrection as the messianic rebuilding of the temple. Each thematic block is based on a specific use of Scripture for the purpose of explaining the significance of Jesus' resurrection.

The contributors to this volume offer a bold re-reading of Hebrews and 1 Peter from the perspective of the Global South. The chapters provide enriching new hermeneutical and theological insights, revealing facets of the text that may not at first be apparent to readers within a Eurocentric context. The volume is thus able to explore topics ranging from the authorship of Hebrews in the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition and the Batak reading of Christus Victor, to a Xhosa perception of the solidarity and sacrifice of Jesus, and intercultural readings of Christian identity in the context of persecution. With an introduction and final response by scholars from the Global North, this volume encourages awareness of how the Global South contributes to world Christianity.
