On dit couramment en francais de quelqu'un qu'il a une aura, quand il se laisse remarquer par son charisme. La langue des sciences occultes en a fait une sorte de halo lumineux, emanantion de l'etre. Mais pour le latiniste, aura, c'est le plus souvent l'air en mouvement, la brise du vent. Comment en est-on arrive la? Cet ouvrage part a la recherche des emplois qui progressivement ont pu charger de mystere le contenu du mot. Aura renvoie tout d'abord a une substance aerienne, qui n'est ni le vent, ni l'air, mais une vapeur emanee de l'eau, une matiere animee dans l'atmosphere terrestre, en somme de l'air en mouvement. A partir de ce coeur semantique relativement simple, les contextes differents, les trouvailles des poetes augusteens, l'evolution des idees philosophico-religieuses font varier le contenu semantique au gre des emplois. Aura se fait brise marine, douce et bienfaissante. Surtout, l'air s'eleve, il devient espace divin, atmosphere celeste, lumiere divine. L'etude des metaphores, qui renvoient tantot a une douceur salvatrice, confirme la souplesse du contenu. On ne saurait d'autre part minimiser l'importance des representations figurees grecques dans cet enrichissement progressif. Ces jeunes femmes ornees d'un voile concave empli de l'aura qui les souleve de terre, fortifient la naissance dans la litterature latine de personnifications de l'air agite. A la faveur du changement dans les idees, de marines qu'elles etaient, ces auxiliaires divines deviennent emissaires du ciel. L'attribut des Aurae uelificantes sua ueste marque les representations d'autres personnages. Il est possible qu'il ait servi de symbole pour souligner l'initiation ou l'heroisation. Aura... Le mot charme par ses sonorites, par le trouble qui l'entoure de nos jours encore. Il a une longue histoire, d'Homere a nos jours. Cet ouvrage suit sa trace a travers un corpus important, grec et surtout latin, et tente de montrer comment a partir d'un coeur semantique relativement simple - l'air en mouvement - le contenu s'est charge d'ambiguite et meme de mystere. La semantique croise alors sur son chemin semiotique, rhetorique, etude des genres litteraires, des arts figures. Et de l'histoire du mot on passe a l'histoire des idees et de l'imaginaire dans le monde romain.
