Raban setzt sich auf das bequeme Sofa und schließt die Augen, die er sofort erschrocken aufreißt. "Das ist doch nicht möglich!", denkt er und dreht sich zum Schreibtisch. Beruhigt erblickt er dort die Figur der Hekate. "Warum habe ich ihre grünen Augen gesehen? Versuchen sie, mich in sich hineinzuziehen?" Der Junge wendet sich zurück, atmet bewusst mehrmals langsam ein und aus, bevor er vorsichtig, ganz langsam, seine Augen schließt. Noch sind sie einen kleinen Schlitz geöffnet, dann nicht mehr. Raban will schon erleichtert aufatmen, als er ein Wispern hört, das offensichtlich zu ihm herüberweht. Alarmiert öffnet er erneut die Augen und schaut sich um. Es ist jedoch alles wie vorher, nichts hat sich verändert. Widerwillig konzentriert er sich auf das Wispern. Vielleicht versteht er die Botschaft, die offenbar von der Figur gesendet wird. Raban muss herausfinden, welche Rolle die Figur der Hekate für das Erstarken der dunklen Zauberer spielt. Zusammen mit seinem Freund, dem Kolkraben Röiven, begibt er sich auf eine gefahrvolle Mission. Sind die dunklen Magier zu stoppen?

The Cesnola Collection of antiquities from Cyprus preserves the island’s artistic traditions from prehistoric through Roman times and represents the first large group of ancient Mediterranean works to enter the museum’s collection. This publication which focuses on Ancient Glass and is the third volume in a series aimed at publishing the collection in its entirety. This catalogue contains descriptions and illustrations of 520 glass vessels and objects. Although the majority of the glass is Roman, the scope of the collection extends from the Late Bronze Age through the end of antiquity (ca. 1500 B.C.– A.D. 600). It is the first attempt in over a century to provide a detailed account of the ancient glass found on Cyprus by Cesnola.

If a reader of Chaucer suspects that an echo of a biblical verse may somehow depend for its meaning on traditional commentary on that verse, how does he or she go about finding the relevant commentaries? It was to the solution of such difficulties that R.E. Kaske addressed himself in this volume setting out and analyzing the major repositories of traditional material: biblical exegesis, the liturgy, hymns and sequences, sermons and homilies, the pictorial arts, mythography, commentaries on individual authors, and a number of miscellaneous themes. An appendix deals with medieval encyclopedias. This book examines the use and significance of light in ancient Greek cult of the Archaic and Classical periods (from the seventh to the fourth century BCE). The research covers all available evidence, ranging from literary texts and inscriptions to representations of light in vase-painting and sculpture, and surviving physical remains from excavations of Greek sanctuaries. Light is treated both as an abstract component of brightness which forms part of the nature of the gods and as an artefact which assumes concrete forms in divine hands. As a possession of mortals, light was regularly involved in contact with the gods. The book considers a numberof rituals in connection with the types and amount of light that they required, and the different roles that light played in them. It shows that the involvement of light in Greek cult was a complex phenomenon, which penetrated a great variety of ritual practices and religious beliefs surrounding the worship of gods in Archaic and Classical Greece.

The ancient city of Elaiussa Sebaste (today Ayas) lies on the south-eastern coast of Turkey. The birth and the development of the settlement were granted by the favourable geographical position of the city, situated along the important coastal road connecting Asia Minor to Syria and projected in the intense commercial traffic of the eastern Mediterranean and, secondly, to the abundant natural resources of the hinterland - timber from the Tauro forests, vineyards and olive trees (elaion) to which the name Elaiussa itself alludes. The site was, during the Roman age, one of the most important cities of the Roman province of Cilicia, which developed considerably in the 2nd and 3rd century AD; it maintained its prestigious role as significant trading port until the Late Empire and the first Byzantine age. Thanks to its long and continuous life, Elaiussa can be indeed qualified as a remarkable case study for the deepening of historical and archaeological knowledge on the dynamics of the development and evolution of urban centres in the Eastern Mediterranean area.
