Louis-Marie Houdebine and Jianglin Fan The study of biological functions of proteins and their possible roles in the pathogenesis of human diseases requires more and more relevant animal m- els. Although mice including genetically modified mice offer many possibilities, other non-murine species are absolutely required in some circumstances. Rabbit is one of these species, which has been widely used in biomedical studies. This animal is genetically and physiologically closer to humans including cardiov- cular system and metabolism characteristics. Rabbit is thus more appropriate than mice to study some diseases such as atherosclerosis and lipid metabolism. Because of its larger size, surgery manipulation, bleeding, and turn-over studies are much easier performed in rabbits than in mice. Furthermore, transgenic rabbits can be produced using microinjection and other methods such as lentiviral v- tors. Cloning in rabbits has been proved possible, even though still laborious and time-consuming. Hopefully, functional rabbit ES cell lines will be available in the coming years. Gene deletion or knock-out in rabbits will then become possible.

Biotechnology is a highly multidisciplinary subject and has got its foundation in many fields including biology, microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, chemistry and chemical and processing engineering. Application of biotechnology in medicine and agriculture has been a recent phenomenon. Modern biotechnological processes now encompass a wide range of new products including antibiotics, recombinant and nucleic acid vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, recombinant therapeutic products like recombinant insulin, growth hormones, prolactin and gene therapy, production of transgenic animals and plants and use of embryo biotechnological methods and stem cells to augment animal production and human therapy, respectively. Animal biotechnology is in its infancy and only during the past ten years, much work has been done in animal biotechnology in few isolated laboratories throughout the world. There is an increasing need to train manpower in animal biotechnology. Even though many colleges are offering courses in Biotechnology for the students, there is no single text book available covering all the aspects of animal biotechnology for the students. This book on Animal Biotechnology has been written to meet out the requirements of both undergraduate and postgraduate students on the subject of biotechnology. There are seventeen chapters in this book covering different aspects of animal biotechnology including enzyme technology, gene therapy, biotechnology in medicine, Intellectual Property Rights and biosafety in biotechnology. Many up-to-date references on most of the topics have been included so that it would be a reference book for postgraduate students studying biotechnology and molecular biology. This would be a useful book for students who are writing competitive examinations for fellowship. With my extensive experience in teaching and research in Animal Biotechnology I have compiled this book to provide students the basic principles of animal biotechnology, current information on different topics of biotechnology, as well as information on Intellectual Property Rights and biosafety guidelines to be adopted in the laboratories.

Animal biotechnology, which is the art and science of producing genetically engineered animals, has advanced in the past few years, and it has now become possible to generate animals with useful novel properties for use in various areas like dairy, biomedicine and so on. This book offers a reasonably comprehensive introduction to the broad and diverse field of animal biotechnology by integrating information from many areas of this field to give the readers the basics of essential concepts and methods and an understanding of how the field is evolving and what developments are on the horizon. The easy-to-read format and numerous illustrations will help students to understand the concepts easily.

Telepresence Bio Art written by Eduardo Kac and has been published by University of Michigan Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Art categories.

"Eduardo Kac's work represents a turning point. What it questions is our current attitudes to creativity, taking that word in its most fundamental sense." -Edward Lucie-Smith, author of Visual Arts in the 20th Century "His works introduce a vital new meaning into what had been known as the creative process while at the same time investing the notion of the artist-inventor with an original social and ethical responsibility." -Frank Popper, author of Origins and Development of Kinetic Art "Kac's radical approach to the creation and presentation of the body as a wet host for artificial memory and 'site-specific' work raises a variety of important questions that range from the status of memory in digital culture to the ethical dilemmas we are facing in the age of bioengineering and tracking technology." -Christiane Paul, Whitney Museum of Art For nearly two decades Eduardo Kac has been at the cutting edge of media art, first inventing early online artworks for the web and continuously developing new art forms that involve telecommunications and robotics as a new platform for art. Interest in telepresence, also known as telerobotics, exploded in the 1990s, and remains an important development in media art. Since that time, Kac has increasingly moved into the fields of biology and biotechnology. Telepresence and Bio Art is the first book to document the evolution of bio art and the aesthetic development of Kac, the creator of the "artist's gene" as well as the controversial glow-in-the-dark, genetically engineered rabbit Alba. Kac covers a broad range of topics within media art, including telecommunications media, interactive systems and the Internet, telematics and robotics, and the contact between electronic art and biotechnology. Addressing emerging and complex topics, this book will be essential reading for anyone interested in contemporary art.
