Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (Leopoli, 27 gennaio 1836 – Lindheim, 9 marzo 1895) è stato un giornalista, romanziere e scrittore austriaco di origini spagnole e ucraine. Il termine "masochismo" deriva appunto da lui. Humor has been praised by philosophers and poets as a balm to soothe the sorrows that outrageous fortune’s slings and arrows cause inevitably, if not incessantly, to each and every one of us. In mundane life, having a sense of humor is seen not only as a positive trait of character, but as a social prerequisite, without which a person’s career and mating prospects are severely diminished, if not annihilated. However, humor is much more than this, and so much else. In particular, humor can accompany cruelty, inform it, sustain it, and exemplify it. Therefore, in this book, we provide a comprehensive, reasoned exploration of the vast literature on the concepts of humor and cruelty, as these have been tackled in Western philosophy, humanities, and social sciences, especially psychology. Also, the apparent cacophony of extant interpretations of these two concepts is explained as the inevitable and even useful result of the polysemy inherent to all common-sense concepts, in line with the understanding of concepts developed by M. Polanyi in the 20th century. Thus, a thorough, nuanced grasp of their complex mutual relationship is established, and many platitudes affecting today's received views, and scholarship, are cast aside.

RISVOLTO I faits divers – sottolineava Sciascia presentando nel 1989 la sua terza raccolta di articoli e saggi dispersi – sono «quelli che noi diciamo fatti di cronaca, cronache quotidiane, cronache a sfondo nero, passionali e criminali spesso, sempre di una certa stranezza e di un certo mistero». «Fatti diversi» vale dunque «parodisticamente, paradossalmente e magari parossisticamente, “cronache”: a render più leggera la specificazione, di crociana ascendenza, di “storia letteraria e civile”». Ma anche a ribadire, si vorrebbe aggiungere, la fedeltà a un metodo in cui alla pertinacia del detective si accompagna l’urgenza di verità, all’erudizione dell’enciclopedista la fabula, alla volontà di ribadire la ragione della Memoria «il senso e il senno dell’oggi». Non a caso la raccolta si apre sull’interrogativo «Come si può essere siciliani?», e prosegue poi con splendide ‘inquisizioni’ che hanno al centro la Sicilia e insieme la letteratura, il cinema, la pittura, la fotografia: come quella sulla Biblioteca Lucchesiana di Girgenti, emblema dell’avversione alla «lue dei libri», dove Pirandello, nel 1889, trovò cinque preti e tre carabinieri «intenti a divorare un’insalata di cocomeri e pomidori» e manoscritti frequentati solo da topi e scarafaggi; o, ancora, quella sull’«Omnibus» di Longanesi e sugli scrittori nati fra il 1905 e il 1908 (fra cui Brancati), pleiade generazionale accomunata dal guardare altrove – e che, esemplarmente indagata da Sciascia, ci rivela come il fascismo fosse un fenomeno ben più complesso, disarticolato e contraddittorio di quanto possa apparire nei libri di storia.
