"An engrossing account of the appeal of religious orthodoxy to formerly secular women, many of them once feminist, radical members of the counterculture. . . . This outstanding work of scholarship reads with the immediacy of a novel." Cynthia Fuchs Epstein, author of Deceptive Distinctions: Sex, Gender, and the Social Order Debra Kaufman writes about ba'alot teshuva women who have returned to Orthodox Judaism, a form of Judaism often assumed to be oppressive to women. She addresses many of the most challenging issues of family, feminism, and gender. Why, she asks, have these women chosen an Orthodox lifestyle? What attracts young, relatively affluent, well-educated, and highly assimilated women to the most traditional, right-wing, patriarchal, and fundamentalist branch of Judaism? The answers she discovers lead her beyond an analysis of religious renewal to those issues all women and men confront in public and private life. Kaufman interviewed and observed 150 ba'alot teshuva. She uses their own stories, in their own words, to show us how they make sense of the choices they have made. Lamenting their past pursuit of individual freedom over social responsibility, they speak of searching for shared meaning and order, and finding it in orthodoxy. The laws and customs of Orthodox Judaism have been formulated by men, and it is men who enforce those laws and control the Orthodox community. The leadership is dominated by men. But the women do not experience theologically-imposed subordination as we might expect. Although most ba'alot teshuva reject feminism or what they perceive as feminism, they maintain a gender consciousness that incorporates aspects of feminist ideology, and often use feminist rhetoric to explain their lives. Kaufman does not idealize the ba'alot teshuva world. Their culture does not accommodate the non-Orthodox, the homosexual, the unmarried, the divorced. Nor do the women have the mechanisms or political power to reject what is still oppressive to them. They must live within the authority of a rabbinic tradition and social structure set by males. Like other religious right women, their choices reinforce authoritarian trends current in today's society. Rachel's Daughters provides a fascinating picture of how newly orthodox women perceive their role in society as more liberating than oppressive.

The saga of "For the Love of Rachel" continues in "Rachel's Daughter." Jennifer Rose Parker was raised on the Parker Ranch in Laurel, Montana. She was the beautiful daughter of Rachel Hargrove Parker and Dr. Mitch Parker, who was killed in a car accident, seven months before Jennifer was born. Rachel later met and married, Grayson Sterling, who was the only father Jennifer ever knew. In high school she met and fell in love with Gabe Colter, whom her mother thought was not good enough for her daughter. She defied her mother and dated him anyway. After high school she went to the University of California to become a doctor, following in her deceased father's footsteps. She and Gabe parted ways, even though it was very hard for both of them. They were deeply in love. Determined to get her education, she sacrificed love. Both she and Gabe faced many disappointments and heartbreaks during the eight long years she was in medical school. Would their faith in God and love for each other be enough to bring them back together or would it be too late?

Love Rachel written by Rebecca M. Painter and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-16 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

What happens when you discover that the person you admire, love and trust most of all has secretly discredited your integrity for most of your life--even on their deathbed? Rebecca Painter's frank, far-flung and often funny exploration of a painful mother-daughter relationship is for anyone challenged by hidden as well as open assaults on their character. To understand and heal her deep-rooted/lifelong trauma, the author transports readers across the Pacific to her mother's youth in the outback of 1920s New Zealand, and Rachel's fateful voyage to the Pacific Northwest in 1939. Did a telegraph error ruin her engagement to the man she called the love of her life? Why would she quickly marry an American cult leader, Rebecca's father, whose paranormal influence lingers after his untimely death? We witness the family's survival struggles, and Rebecca's challenges as an outsider attending an elite women's college--which resemble the barriers her mother faced in the British class system. Rebecca's dream of a scholarly career is deferred, but her prayers are answered by the chance to care for and be reconciled with her dying mother. [LOVE] RACHEL speaks of believable miracles, and--despite decades of soul-wrenching negative judgments--how personal integrity can be defended and empowered from within. "A gripping, haunting journey of forgiveness. Despite her mother's harsh judgments, Rebecca learns to love herself, have compassion for her mother...and comes to terms with their demons. Her memoir is a lyrical and intelligent page-turner and an inspiration." --Carole Mallory, actress, supermodel, author of Picasso's Ghost, Loving Mailer, and Flash "Rebecca Painter's wonderful memoir examines the compelling, dramatic and puzzling events of her mother's life, in her struggle to understand their fraught relationship.... As a daughter, I consider this to be more than just a great story. It is a truly important read about human relations." --Miriam Katin, artist, author of award-winning illustrated memoir We Are on Our Own and Letting It Go "A daringly honest, amazing account of a complex, always fascinating relationship." -- Lee J. Strauss, author of The First Language and Toward a Biology of Culture
