The gifted education environment can prove culturally hostile for African American/Black students (Pearman & McGee, 2022). Racially hostile college climates wear on gifted and talented Black college students. Therefore, it is necessary to understand how the racial microaggressions that gifted African American students experience impact them over time. This study addressed that problem by asking eight academically talented Black college students to share their experiences of racial microaggressions. This narrative inquiry provides a thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews. The findings point to the persistence of racism in gifted education and illuminate the effects of racial battle fatigue in gifted Black college students. K-12 Educators, counselors, administrators, parents, and higher education professionals can mitigate racial battle fatigue through anti-racism.

This study examined the contributors to and experiences of racial battle fatigue (RBF) on Black high school students. RBF is the "result of constant...psychological, cultural, and emotional coping with racial microaggressions in less-than-ideal and racially hostile or unsupportive environments" (Smith et al, 2007; p. 555). RBF's manifestations of fear, resentment (Smith et al., 2007), mental exhaustion and hopelessness among other negative emotions threaten Black students' well-being. Researchers have primarily investigated RBF among college students of color; thus, there is limited information on Black high school students' RBF experiences. Additionally, RBF studies have not thoroughly assessed how differing sources of bias (e.g., bias from peers vs. educators), racial identity endorsement, and specific coping strategies relate to RBF outcomes. Thus, this study sought to answer the following research questions: a) What are the relationships between the source of racial bias, racial identity, coping, and RBF? And b) Does coping mediate the relationship between racial biases, racial identity, and RBF? A total of 134 (n = 134) twelfth through ninth grade Black and multi-racial (with Black ancestry) students participated in this study in which they completed an online survey. Independent variables consisted of Racial Bias and Racial Identity (Public Regard). Mediating and dependent variables consisted of Seeking Understanding (a processing-based coping strategy) and RBF factors (Mental and Emotional Fatigue and Hopelessness about Future Success), respectively. Structural equation modeling (SEM) measured the relationship between racial bias, racial identity, coping, and RBF. Examination of direct and indirect effects determined whether Seeking Understanding mediated, the relationship between racial stressors, racial identity and RBF. While the hypothesized model did not meet fit indices thresholds, additional analysis revealed that Seeking Understanding may exacerbate RBF outcomes for Black students who experience bias from peers and Black students with lower Public Regard. Empirically, these results indicate that RBF should be further investigated among this population, and further suggest that the degree of coping should be considered as much as the type of coping when combating racism at school. Practically, these outcomes may provide insight on how schools can develop individualized interventions that consider the role of and contributors to RBF.

On the surface, Riverview High School looks like the post-racial ideal. Serving an enviably affluent, diverse, and liberal district, the school is well-funded, its teachers are well-trained, and many of its students are high achieving. Yet Riverview has not escaped the same unrelenting question that plagues schools throughout America: why is it that even when all of the circumstances seem right, black and Latino students continue to lag behind their peers? Through five years' worth of interviews and data-gathering at Riverview, John Diamond and Amanda Lewis have created a rich and disturbing portrait of the achievement gap that persists more than fifty years after the formal dismantling of segregation. As students progress from elementary school to middle school to high school, their level of academic achievement increasingly tracks along racial lines, with white and Asian students maintaining higher GPAs and standardized testing scores, taking more advanced classes, and attaining better college admission results than their black and Latino counterparts. Most research to date has focused on the role of poverty, family stability, and other external influences in explaining poor performance at school, especially in urban contexts. Diamond and Lewis instead situate their research in a suburban school, and look at what factors within the school itself could be causing the disparity.
