Imagining Home written by Sidney J. Lemelle and has been published by Verso this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994-12-17 with History categories.

This collection of original essays brilliantly interrogates the often ambivalent place of Africa in the imaginations, cultures and politics of its “New World” descendants. Combining literary analysis, history, biography, cultural studies, critical theory and politics, Imagining Home offers a fresh and creative approach to the history of Pan-Africanism and diasporic movements. A critical part of the book’s overall project is an examination of the legal, educational and political institutions and structures of domination over Africa and the African diaspora. Class and gender are placed at center stage alongside race in the exploration of how the discourses and practices of Pan-Africanism have been shaped. Other issues raised include the myriad ways in which grassroots religious and cultural movements informed Pan-Africanist political organizations; the role of African, African-American and Caribbean intellectuals in the formation of Pan-African thought—including W.E.B. DuBois, C.L.R. James and Adelaide Casely Hayford; the historical, ideological and institutional connections between African-Americans and South Africans; and the problems and prospects of Pan-Africanism as an emancipatory strategy for black people throughout the Atlantic.

The Predicament Of Blackness written by Jemima Pierre and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-10 with Social Science categories.

What is the meaning of blackness in Africa? While much has been written on Africa’s complex ethnic and tribal relationships, Jemima Pierre’s groundbreaking The Predicament of Blackness is the first book to tackle the question of race in West Africa through its postcolonial manifestations. Challenging the view of the African continent as a nonracialized space—as a fixed historic source for the African diaspora—she envisions Africa, and in particular the nation of Ghana, as a place whose local relationships are deeply informed by global structures of race, economics, and politics. Against the backdrop of Ghana’s history as a major port in the transatlantic slave trade and the subsequent and disruptive forces of colonialism and postcolonialism, Pierre examines key facets of contemporary Ghanaian society, from the pervasive significance of “whiteness” to the practice of chemical skin-bleaching to the government’s active promotion of Pan-African “heritage tourism.” Drawing these and other examples together, she shows that race and racism have not only persisted in Ghana after colonialism, but also that the beliefs and practices of this modern society all occur within a global racial hierarchy. In doing so, she provides a powerful articulation of race on the continent and a new way of understanding contemporary Africa—and the modern African diaspora.

Emerging Perspectives On The Black Diaspora written by Aubrey W. Bonnett and has been published by Lanham : University Press of America this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with History categories.

This book attempts a comparative analysis of the condition of Blacks in the new world diaspora. The editors contend that this diaspora cannot be fully understood apart from politics and social structure, or apart from the broad historical background of the political economy of plantation society, capitalism and their profound structural legacies. It brings a focused perspective to a previously neglected group of people in different nation-states who labor under very real social and political handicaps. Ultimately the themes of persistence and resilience are the focus of these essays. Contents: and Contributors: The Formation of Black Society in the Diaspora-James Walvin, Subhas Ramcharan, Calvin Holder, James W. St. G. Walker; Reflections on the Experience of Blacks in the Diaspora-Pierre L. Van Den Berghe, Aubrey W. Bonnett, George Beckford; Structural Aspects of Discrimination: Colonialism, Racism and Economic Relations-Frances Henry, Arnold Gibbons, Priestly, Suzanne Michael; Aspects of Black Culture in the Diaspora-Abiola Irele, G. Llewellyn Watson, Monica Gordon, Horace Cambell.
