Joseph Roth was one of the most significant German-language writers of the interwar period, yet few major studies of his work have been published in English. Kati Tonkin's monograph spans Roth's novelistic career, challenging the widely held assumption that his writing can be divided into an early "socialist" and a later "monarchist" phase: that his late novels 'Radetzkymarsch' and 'Die Kapuzinergruft' are deeply nostalgic, presenting an idealized picture of the Habsburg Empire, a "backward-turned utopia." In contrast, Tonkin reads the later works not as escapist but as attempts to grasp the reasons for the failure of the empire. The historical context in which Roth operated -- that of the late empire and its successor states -- has been a focus of renewed interest since the end of the Cold War, as Central Europe re-emerges as a region with a distinct historical and cultural identity steeped in multinational Habsburg traditions, and Central European nations accede to the European Union. This book will therefore be of interest to students and scholars of early-20th-century Central European literature, history, and culture; of the socio-cultural environment of the late Habsburg Empire; of Jewish identity in German-speaking Central Europe; and of national identity in the multinational context. Die flinken Kugeln pfiffen im Takt um den Kopf Carl Josephs, sein blanker Säbel blitzte, und Herz und Hirn erfüllt von der holden Hurtigkeit des Marsches, sank er hin in den trommelnden Rausch der Musik, und sein Blut sickerte in einem dunkelroten und schmalen Streifen auf das gleißende Gold der Trompeten, das tiefe Schwarz der Pauken und das siegreiche Silber der Tschinellen. 1 So imaginiert der fünfzehnjährige Carl Joseph von Trotta in Joseph Roths Roman Radetzkymarsch den idealtypischen Heldentod für seinen Kaiser, den er früher oder später zu erleiden überzeugt ist; tatsächlich auch kommt der Hauptakteur am Ende des Romans als junger Leutnant auf einem Schlachtfeld des gerade ausgebrochenen Ersten Weltkriegs um. Jedoch stirbt er "nicht mit der Waffe, sondern mit zwei Wassereimern in der Hand."2 Stirbt so ein Held? In der umfangreichen Literatur zum Werk Joseph Roths finden sich, wie sich noch ze igen wird, die gegenläufigsten Meinungen, was die Interpretation des Todes von Carl Joseph von Trotta anlangt. Scheible 3 hat darauf hingewiesen, dass dieser Tod nicht isoliert, sondern nur im Kontext der ganzen Lebensumstände und des Werdegangs des Leutnants gedeutet werden kann. Dem ist zuzustimmen, wenn man unterstellt, dass in Roths Hauptwerk4, das dessen "seelische Obsession"5 - nämlich den Untergang seiner geliebten Heimat, der alten Habsburger-Monarchie - zum Thema hat, der schon ziemlich zu Anfang des Romans angedeutete Tod des maßgeblichen Protagonisten nicht irgendeine Episode darstellen kann, sondern in einem übergeordneten Zusammenhang innerhalb des Werks konstituiert sein muss.
