This is an entirely new edition of the author′s 1984 study (originally published by South End Press) of radical media and movements. The first and second sections are original to this new edition. The first section explores social and cultural theory in order to argue that radical media should be a central part of our understanding of media in history. The second section weaves an historical and international tapestry of radical media to illustrate their centrality and diversity, from dance and graffiti to video and the internet and from satirical prints and street theatre to culture-jamming, subversive song, performance art and underground radio. The section also includes consideration of ultra-rightist media as a key contrast case. The book′s third section provides detailed case-studies of the anti-fascist media explosion of 1974-75 in Portugal, Italy′s long-running radical media, radio and access video in the USA, and illegal media in the dissolution of the former Soviet bloc dictatorships.

This is an interesting book. It may be useful for those who have not followed the debate on the experience of women in psychiatric services. It provides useful information on ways of working with more disturbed women. These are women whom psychiatric services often avoid or at least with whom they do little constructive work. The emphasis on offering therapy to these women instead of a bed in an institution was refreshing. --Andrea Bennett in Clinical Psychology Forum How can counselors and clinicians help empower women in a sexist, racist, and homophobic society? How can they help women reclaim their bodies? Or repair their violated bond with womenkind? Taking feminist therapy one step further, this enlightening volume focuses on a central problem in our society--violence against women--and explores practical, feminist ways of working with women′s responses to it: depression, cutting, splitting, troubled eating, and protest. Radical Feminist Therapy explores issues that are usually either omitted or pathologized in generalist feminist counseling texts such as women battered by their pimps, women who self-mutilate, and psychiatrized women. Other topics covered are working with lesbians; American Indian, African American, Jewish, and immigrant women; women with disabilities; working with heterosexual couples; sexual violation by therapists; and working with suicidal clients. A list of recommended readings follows each chapter. Radical Feminist Therapy addresses the needs of both students and practitioners in the areas of psychology, counseling, social work, and women′s studies who desire a comprehensive, enlightening text they will refer to again and again. "Burstow′s book should prove very useful as a resource for practitioners in a wide variety of areas dealing with violence against women. . . . The first part of the book presents the theoretical foundations; the remaining 12 chapters integrate theory and practice. Written from a well-articulated radical feminist position, the text is grounded in structuralist theory that situates problems in living within the systematic oppressions of classism, sexism, and racism. Respect for women and for their right to make their own decisions in therapy permeates the text." --Choice "This book fills a gap in the literature addressed by no other publication I have seen. There are numerous theoretical books on feminist counseling or therapy. But I have seen nothing which moves from theory to clear, practical suggestions on what to do and how to do it when working with women on different problems. Bonnie begins by presenting a clear feminist framework in which she sees violence against women in our society as the central problem in all women′s lives. She explains how this core issue plays itself out in different areas of women′s lives and how it is central to the personal problems women struggle with. She then goes on to give practical, concrete suggestions about how to actually work with women in therapy. She warns readers of common pitfalls and how to avoid them. It is an extremely cohesive and useful piece of work." --Linda Advokaat, Feminist Counselor, Sessional Instructor, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada "As a presentation of theory translated into casework, this is the best I have seen in its field--a deft integration of politics and philosophy, made relevant and workable in the chosen context." --Counselling

Questioning Qualitative Inquiry written by Martyn Hammersley and has been published by SAGE this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-07-10 with Social Science categories.

Is qualitative research in crisis? In Questioning Qualitative Inquiry Martyn Hammersley raises fundamental questions about the current state of qualitative social research. He examines some of the changes that have taken place within it over the past fifty years, suggesting that the move away from natural science as a model, and towards an appeal to literature and art, involves rejection of key principles that are essential to research of any kind. Hammersley argues that, in important respects, qualitative inquiry has not lived up to the claims originally made on its behalf, and that more recent developments have worsened the situation. Insufficient attention has been given to the problems surrounding leading ideas like thick description, analytic induction, and constructionism. The argument is pursued through discussion of the work of influential writers - such as Clifford, Geertz, Denzin and Lincoln - and by detailed examination of concrete issues, like the value of interview data, the rationales for discourse and conversation analysis, the role of rhetoric in research reports, and the nature of assessment criteria. At a time when qualitative inquiry is coming under renewed challenge in some quarters, the task of addressing the methodological problems it faces has become urgent. These essays on current developments and debates are essential reading for anyone interested in the future of qualitative research.

Radical Feminism Today offers a timely and engaging account of exactly what feminism is, and what it is not. Author Denise Thompson questions much of what has come to be taken for granted as `feminism' and points to the limitations of implicitly defining feminism in terms of `women', `gender', `difference' or `race//gender//class'. She challenges some of the most widely accepted ideas about feminism and in doing so opens up a number of hitheto closed debates, allowing for the possibility of moving those debates further.

The Book Of Sages written by Éliphas Lévi and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-09 with categories.

Alphonse Louis Constant (1810-75), A.K.A. Éliphas Lévi, a seminary dropout, mixed in socialist circles and wrote several radical political books that led to prison sentences. In the 1850s he devoted his time to the study and promulgation of occult doctrine: especially magic and Kabbalah. His writings were seminal for occultists including Papus, A. E. Waite, and Aleister Crowley. In 'The Book of Sages', one of Lévi's last writings, he formulates his beliefs clearly and accessibly. His literary range is on display as he portrays himself in a series of short, rich fictional dialogues with representatives of "the whole religious and philosophical polemic of the present age": a reactionary Catholic apologist, a priest, a philosopher, a pantheist, a Jew, a Protestant, a doctor, a scientist, a spiritualist, and finally an esotericist like himself. He highlights his differences and agreements, often surprising, with each of these worldviews. In the second half of the book Lévi formulates his doctrine in a series of short topical chapters with enumerated aphorisms. These touch on religion, morality, nature, (animal) magnetism, death, Satan, occultism, faith, science, and other subjects. His stated purpose being to "reconcile science and dogma, authority and freedom, reason and faith", Lévi's writings are a response to Enlightenment modernity, to the clash of science and faith. He doesn't want to go back to medieval simplicity, but to progress forward: his writings anticipate a global, universal, rational, and hierarchical religion that will repair the spiritual emptiness of modern scientific humanity. This is the first English translation of this book.

The problems we encounter in our everyday lives - from the midlife crisis to loneliness and the search for meaning - often seem to be phenomena only of the modern world. But they have been encountered and addressed by wise men and women for countless centuries. We are sitting on a treasure chest of teachings formulated by pioneers of human psychology, spirituality and emotional states. These teachings are more than relevant today. They might just be the most radical, effective and low-cost way of changing our lives positively. The Power of Then applies the teachings of the sages of the past and the lessons of their lives to the everyday problems - emotional, mental and spiritual - that continue to beset us. From the earthy example of the medieval housewife Margery Kempe (patron saint of the midlife crisis) to the original insights of the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung, James Bremner unlocks the wisdom of the past and applies it to the present. Written in a clear, engaging and personal style, The Power of Then is full of helpful guidance, encouragement and reflection, garnered from some of the greatest sages the world has known.

The World Of The Axial Sages written by JOHN C. STEPHENS and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-03-28 with categories.

This book presents an engaging analysis of the global spiritual changes of the first millennium BCE. Between the sixth and fourth centuries BCE, several new, revolutionary religious and philosophic movements were born throughout the world. Rather than using the well-known label "Axial Age" to refer to this time of religious change, the book argues that a better choice would be the "Age of Awakening", since it places more emphasis upon the personal, internal dimension of religious experience lying at the core of these developments. Earthshattering spiritual encounters with the sacred led the prophets and sages of the Age of Awakening to redirect people's attention away from the stagnant traditions of the past towards new forms of dynamic spirituality. The era saw the emergence of a variety of innovative spiritual pathways in both the eastern and western worlds. In classical Greece, Pythagoras and Plato proposed new spiritual and intellectual alternatives to the outdated religious myths and rituals of the polis. The Middle East also played a significant role in the spiritual revolution of the first millennium BCE. As early as the sixth century BCE, the Persian prophet Zoroaster's revelatory visions about the Truth and the Lie led to the birth of a new religious movement known as Zoroastrianism. At the time of the Babylonian Exile, ancient Judaism underwent a process of radical spiritual renewal largely due to the inspired teachings of the Hebrew prophets. In India, the writers of the Upanishads provided a spiritual reinterpretation of many of the old Vedic myths and rituals. Sages including the Buddha and Mahavira rejected the old sacrificial system of the brahmins and asserted that liberation from the cycle of birth and death could only be found through the practice of asceticism and a general withdrawal from the illusory material world. As such, this book highlights the importance of the de-stabilizing influences of religious experience for understanding the revolutionary spiritual developments of the first millennium BCE.
