I was inspired to write the book RADICALLY CHANGED as a result of my being exposed to people in the downtown eastside skid row of a large city. Men and women come to the downtown eastside skid row with problems that often seem insurmountable. Many have addictions while, others are traumatized or victimized with little self esteem or self worth. They try to drown their sorrows with mind altering substances. Others have horrible nightmares as a reminder of something often horrendous that had happened to them or to a loved one. There are those who have done something which they regret. They are sorry but often plagued with memories of what they have done or failed to do. Men and women abused and beaten down are appalled by what they have suffered at the hands of people they trusted and respected. Some contemplate suicide in order to end their dependance on drugs or memories which impede their ability to function adequately in society. the Mission, on the worst street in the country, is a gathering place for those who are plagued with these problems. It is a safe place in the bowels of a hellish existence for many who are forced to live and interact in this setting and sub culture. When they enter the Mission they feel the caring and concern of the staff and the students from the Bible College. These are loving persons ready to brighten their day, listen to their sordid stories and tell them about Jesus who is their hope. Those who respond to the invitation and go to the Bible College are rewarded with knowledge and insight into methods of recovering and becoming new creations. Many have become radically changed. Their life changing adventures are exposed in the pages of this inspirational book.

A Generation of Radical Educational Change: Stories from the Field is an exploration of the revolutionary impact of the greater and continuing involvement of central government in education policy-making which began in 1976 and was accelerated by the 1988 Education Act and subsequent legislation. In the book, a dozen distinguished contributors from a wide range of sectors explain and reflect on how they worked to do their best for their schools, teachers and pupils in these years of great change. They understand the reasons, explained by Lord Baker in his early chapter, for a National Curriculum in 1988, and also the reasons for a more effective national inspection system. This book discusses and compares how social movements in Brazil, Chile, Greece and England are beacons of alternative politics. It focuses on the potential of these movements to radically transform higher education and society. It explores how social movements create new forms of resistance to the ubiquity of global capitalism and new forms of thinking, acting and being in the world that are not based on exploitation and profit. Rather, they are premised on respect for diversity, commitment to equality and inclusion, solidaristic structures and multiple and equally valued (pluriversal) epistemologies. The book draws on empirical material collected over 12 years in conversation with key participants in social movements including the Brazilian Movimiento de los Trabajadores Rurales Sin Tierra, Chilean and Greek Student movements, and the Black Lives Matter Movement in England. These movements confront the realist pedagogies in our lives, that is, the practices and structures that dominate the way society and education are organized. Realist pedagogies are juxtaposed with what the author calls pluriversal pedagogies, which are premised on horizontalism, democratic fellowship, solidarity, harmonious existence of humans and non-humans (a broadened sense of ubuntu) and prefigurative politics. These pluriversal pedagogies create emergent social relations that have the potential to deliver real alternatives for the majority of people in the global North and South. The book includes a foreword written by Antonia Darder and a preface by Rebecca Tarlau.

In this book I discuss the justification of scientific change and argue that it rests on different sorts of invariance. Against this background I con sider notions of observation, meaning, and regulative standards. My position is in opposition to some widely influential and current views. Revolutionary new ideas concerning the philosophy of science have recently been advanced by Feyerabend, Hanson, Kuhn, Toulmin, and others. There are differences among their views and each in some respect differs from the others. It is, however, not the differences, but rather the similarities that are of primary concern to me here. The claim that there are pervasive presuppositions fundamental to scientific in vestigations seems to be essential to the views of these men. Each would further hold that transitions from one scientific tradition to another force radical changes in what is observed, in the meanings of the terms employed, and in the metastandards involved. They would claim that total replace ment, not reduction, is what does, and should, occur during scientific revolutions. I argue that the proposed arguments for radical observational variance, for radical meaning variance, and for radical variance of regulative standards with respect to scientific transitions all fail. I further argue that these positions are in themselves implausible and methodologically undesirable. I sketch an account of the rationale of scientific change which preserves the merits and avoids the shortcomings of the approach of radical meaning variance theorists.
