The aim of this book, in discussing Elias’s theory, is not to refute it. Tendentiously, the theory works with its weaknesses and strong points and it has been enriched by a number of authors over time. The objective of this volume is to discuss the blind spots and, more simply, what is too often taken for granted: namely the obvious pacifying effect of sports and/or produced by sports. Post-communism has determined the social and political reality in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe for the last 25 years. A characteristic phenomenon during this time is a religious revival in the societies that were subject to intense atheization under the conditions of communist totalitarianism. This process can be observed in Ukraine, Belarus and Serbia. Undoubtedly, in all three cases, the Orthodox faith and the institutions that represent it have become an important element of the political culture. This book analyses the influence of Orthodoxy on political behaviours, values and judgments, looking particularly at such topics as the legacy of communism, shared attitudes towards the “West,” the European Union, democracy, and the ways of conceptualising post-communist Ukrainian, Belarussian and Serbian cultural and national identity. Partout dans le monde surgissent des mobilisations ethniques qui, souvent liées à des réseaux maffieux, déstabilisent les Etats-nations fragilisés par la mondialisation. Le discours des nouvelles élites " mondialisées ", célébrant un nouvel ordre planétaire garanti par le droit international et couronné par une prétendue " gouvernance cosmopolite ", est étrangement décalé par rapport à cette dure réalité d'un monde non plus seulement multipolaire mais multiconflictuel, et rendu plus dangereux que jamais en raison tant de l'affaiblissement croissant des Etats que des progrès de la technologie militaire. Le déchaînement des nationalismes, et tout particulièrement des micronationalismes à base ethnique - et à visage terroriste - dans le contexte de la mondialisation sauvage, s'annonce aujourd'hui comme plus vraisemblable que leur apaisement progressif. Réexaminer les nationalismes du XXe siècle, s'efforcer de décrire correctement et d'expliquer rigoureusement les nationalismes aujourd'hui observables, se montrer attentif aux formes émergentes de nationalisme, telles sont les tâches intellectuelles qui s'imposent à nous.
