On 10 July 2018, exactly 100 years and 100 days after the formation of the world’s first independent air force, 103 aircraft of twenty-four types from twenty-five squadrons flew over London in the largest formation of military aircraft seen over the capital of the UK in nearly thirty years. Involving over 250 aircrew and operating out of fourteen military and two civilian airfields, with nineteen back-up aircraft and a standby air-to-air refueling tanker, the Royal Air Force put on a unrivaled display to mark the centenary of its creation on 1 April 1918, in the closing months of the First World War. Exemplifying that long and proud history, was the Spitfire, Hurricane, Lancaster and Dakota of the Memorial Flight, as well as the enduring Hercules, with the newly acquired F-35B Lightning displaying the RAF’s continuing global importance. This book reveals how the flypast was conceived and examines the detailed planning involved in the event, written by someone who would know – the project manager and coordinator. The composition and size of the flypast was truly momentous, comprising virtually every type of aircraft that the RAF operated at the time. As Chief of Staff at the Tornado GR4 Force Headquarters operating from RAF Marham, and an experienced Tornado GR4 Navigator, Wing Commander Kevin Gatland had the task of pulling together all the necessary components, both military and civilian required to produce an unrivaled aerial display. This involved considering the feasibility of assembling so many varied types of aircraft, all with different speeds and capabilities, in addition to concentrating them into a tight schedule to produce a virtually continuous stream of aircraft over central London, with elements breaking off to pass over the northerly runway at Heathrow Airport, the RAF Memorial at Runnymede, Windsor Castle and the RAF Museum at Hendon. Beautifully illustrated with glorious color in-flight photographs of the magnificent aircraft of the current RAF as well as the briefing and planning session, this book demonstrates the enormous range of factors that had to be taken into consideration to produce the amazing spectacle that was witnessed by the Queen from Buckingham Palace and the thousands who gathered in The Mall – an event captured in the pages of this fascinating book.

Using a range of unique and secretive tactics and equipment, the men within the group were able to 'confound and destroy' the enemy--perfectly living up to their motto."--Dust jacket.

This year, 2018, is the 100th Year of the R.A.F. It also marks the 75th Anniversary of RAF No.100 (Bomber Support) Group under Bomber Command, without which we would not have won the Second World War. Still relatively unknown, hundreds of men and women were involved, feeding and receiving information to and from Bletchley Park and the Y-Service, with airmen flying operations deep into the heart of Germany. By Autumn/Winter 1942, air battles over Germany were critical. Losses of RAF bombers was at an all-time high against increasing effectiveness of the German Air Defence system. Something drastic was called for, which came in the form of this specialist Group. Formed in November 1943, RAF No.100 (Bomber Support) Group was based on airfields across Norfolk. While its people remained within the main RAF, they were set apart from it; specially chosen for unique, secret operations which ultimately defeated the enemy. The U.S. 36th Bomb Squadron, 8th Air Force, brought vital aircraft from the States, living and working alongside RAF 100 Group, flying combined operations, identifying and jamming enemy Radar, mis-directing potential attacks and targets, working with the Resistance, dropping and collecting SOE Agents, and so much more. This evocative book evidences the impact RAF 100 Group had in the global theatre of war, offering a unique and telling insight into what was happening prior to its inception. It is written as an urgent response to veterans who survived the war, and those who have taken their secrets to the grave, letting them know we admire and respect them. To their families and friends seeking answers to what a loved one did in wartime, it offers a fascinating glimpse into times past, asking that finally we give recognition and reward so richly deserve. The book includes rare RAF 100 Group photographs, maps, diagrams, illustrations of the day. We WILL Remember Them!

The Royal Air Force has been central to the evolution of air power for 100 years. It is also the oldest independent air force in the world with origins that take it back to the earliest days of flight. Formed in 1918 while the outcome of the First World War was still in doubt the Royal Air Force has played a vital part in the defence of Britain and her allies for a century. 100 Years of the Royal Air Force is a fast-paced and authoritative account of the history, the aeroplanes, the technology and the people who have flown and fought for the service and it is illustrated with more than 150 great images from a wide variety of sources. It tells of the early days when the RAF was formed from the merger of the RFC and the RNAS; the fight to stay independent in the inter-war years; the vitally important battles fought during the Second World War - the Battle of Britain, the bomber campaign, Coastal Command s fight to maintain Britain s sealanes and the tireless work of Transport Command. The coming of jet aircraft revolutionised the work of the RAF as did the advent of flight refuelling, the missile and many other key inventions. The modern Royal Air Force, now smaller and constrained by budgets, has maintained its reputation as an agile, adaptable and capable force.

This remarkable book brings together for the first time writings of RAF 100 Group who, during WWII, flew secret operations deep into the heart of Germany - identifying and jamming enemy radar, working with Bletchley Park and the Y-Service, supporting SOE and the Resistance. Over 55,000 men died in Bomber Command, the highest casualty rate of any Unit. On VE Day, Churchill praised those who contributed to victory, with one glaring omission - Bomber Command, of which this Group was a valued part. What happened to his stirring words: 'The fighters are our salvation, but the bombers alone provide the means of victory'? Seventy years on, RAF 100 Group remains shrouded in mystery, their families unaware as veterans take their secrets to the grave. This book represents a tribute, a Memorial, proof of their existence, finally giving them recognition so richly deserved.

It was in the closing year of the First World War, on 1 April 1918, that the Royal Air Force was born from the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service. Since then, the RAF has helped lead the world in the development of aviation and air warfare. From the fighters and bombers of the Second World War, through the early jet age and into modern remotely piloted air systems, the last hundred years' development has been astronomical, and the human story no less impressive. Here Peter Jacobs gathers the most poignant objects of the RAF's proud history and displays them together, in full splendid colour, for the first time. Aircraft, memorials, uniforms, equipment, and some items you would never expect – it's all here, ready to be explored.
