The short stories of Ernest Thompson Seton are renowned for voicing great passion for the lives of animals and nature through rich, expressive and entertaining narration. Lauded as an appreciator of the great outdoors, Seton deftly brings the natural world to life, his descriptions of creatures roaming the forests, plains and hills accurate and evocative. Each tale describes the animal characters and their place of habitat, plus their encounters with other residents nearby. Not only will readers enjoy the stories of the young rabbit Raggylug and Lobo the notorious wolf, they will also learn how critters make their homes, gather food, communicate and live day by day. Ernest Seton was famous for founding the Boy Scouts of America, an organization which sought to promote interest and respect for natural environments. Since his death in 1946, Seton's written works have retained a treasured place in popular culture, in part thanks to their wide publication across the world, and to several modern adaptations of the stories. Particular interest emerged from Japan, where multiple animated cartoon series were produced from the 1970s onward.

Excerpt from Raggylug: The Cottontail Rabbit and Other Animal Stories It will be seen, then, that these wolves were thoroughly well-known to the cowboys and shepherds. They were frequently seen and oftener heard, and their lives were intimately associated with those of the cattlemen, who would so gladly have destroyed them. There was not a stockman on the Currumpaw who would not readily have given the value of many steers for the scalp of any one of Lobo's band, but they seemed to possess charmed lives, and defied all manner of devices to kill them. They scorned all hunters, derided all poisons, and continued, for at least five years, to exact their tribute from the Currumpaw ranchers to the extent, many said, of a cow each day. According to this estimate, there fore, the band had killed more than two thou sand of the finest stock, for, as was only too well-known, they selected the best in every instance. Wildlife Land And People written by Donald G. Wetherell and has been published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-01 with Nature categories.

Encounters with wild animals are among the most significant relationships between humans and the natural world. Presenting a history of human interactions with wildlife in Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan between 1870 and 1960, Wildlife, Land, and People examines the confrontations that led to diverse consequences – from the near annihilation of some species to the extraordinary preservation of others – and skilfully finds the roots of these relationships in people’s needs for food, sport, security, economic development, personal fulfillment, and identity. Donald Wetherell shows how utilitarian practices, in which humans viewed animals either as friendly sources of profit or as threats to their economic and personal security, dominated until the 1960s. Alongside these views, however, other attitudes asserted that wild animals were part of the beauty, mystery, and order of the natural world. Wetherell outlines the ways in which this attitude gained strength after World War II, distinguished by a growing conviction that every species has ecological value. Through a century in which the natural landscape of the prairie region was radically transformed by human activity, conflicts developed over fur and game management, over Aboriginal use of the land, and over the preservation of endangered species like bison and elk. Yet the period also saw the creation of national parks, zoos, and natural history societies. Drawing on a wide array of historical sources and photographs as well as current approaches to environmental history, Wildlife, Land, and People enriches our understanding of the many-layered relationships between humans and nature.

'This very informative and in-depth book about rabbits has some excellent and entertaining chapters on the rabbit in art, literature, myth, and popular culture, which I particularly enjoyed.' Libby Joy | The Beatrix Potter Society An Affectionate History of Nature's Most Surprising Species. Independent and resourceful, rabbits represent balance, rebirth, speed, fertility, resurrection, abundance, creativity, magic, and harmony. Yet they are much more than symbols, they are unique individuals with complex inner lives. In The Way of the Rabbit, Mark Hawthorne immerses himself in their world, exploring their habitats and evolution, their role in legend and literature, their place in popular culture, their fascinating biology, and, of course, their significance as household companions. It's an entertaining journey through myth and history that celebrates the rabbit's spirit, courage, friendships, and playfulness.
