"There are more than fifteen thousand human organ transplants performed annually in the United States, and each year demand increases, outstripping the medical industry's ability to supply organs. Faced with this relative scarcity, policy makers and health care professionals are forced to question the basic policies of organ procurement. For example, should organ procurement continue to rely on voluntary donations? And are there organizational and policy solutions that could alleviate the continuing shortage of human organs?" "The Most Useful Gift, written for health care managers and policy makers, is the first comprehensive guide to understanding the challenges human organ procurement professionals face. In it, Jeffrey Prottas explains the organizational, technological, and social dynamics that make organ transplantation possible, and he offers specific suggestions on how to improve organ procurement and deal with the natural shortage of available human organs." "By tracing the progress of the field from its beginning, Prottas shows how organ procurement organizations (OPOs) have improved the delivery and efficiency of transplantation to the point where the average OPO today is more effective at procuring organs than the top 10 percent were in 1982." "Prottas explains which organizational innovations hold the best potential for increasing the supply of human organs. He shows how health care managers can increase the number of potential donors by making OPOs responsible for organ referrals, thereby avoiding the bottleneck effect that arises when doctors and nurses are chiefly responsible." "And finally, by examining the ethical issues that arise in the face of a limited organ supply, Prottas explores the numerous challenges policy makers and health care professionals must address and stresses the need for sound government policy and public funding to allay doctor and patient concerns about adequate treatment and equal access."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Spare Parts written by Renee C. Fox and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-12 with Medical categories.

Spare Parts examines major developments in the field of organ replacement that occurred in the United States over the course of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s. It focuses upon significant medical and social changes in the transplantation of human organs and on the development and clinical testing of the Jarvik-7 artificial heart, with special emphasis on how these biomedical events were related to the political, economic, and social climate of American society. Part I examines the important biomedical advances and events in organ transplantation and their social and cultural concomitants. In Part II, the focus shifts to the story of the rise and fall of the Jarvik-7 artificial heart in the United States, its relation to American social institutions and cultural patterns, and its bearing on social control issues associated with therapeutic innovation and the patient-oriented clinical research it entails. Part III is a personal conclusion, which explains why the authors left the field of organ transplantation after so many years. Spare Parts is written in a narrative, ethnographic style, with thickly descriptive, verbatim, and atmospheric detail. The primary data it is based upon includes qualitative materials, collected via participant observation, interviews in a variety of medical milieu, and content analysis of medical journals, newspapers, and magazine articles, and a number of television transcripts. The new introduction provides an overview of some of the recent developments in transplantation and also underscores how tenacious many of the patterns associated with organ replacement have been. Spare Parts should be read by all medical professionals, sociologists, and historians.

data. Furthermore, the European Union established clear basic principles for the collection, storage and use of personal data by governments, businesses and other organizations or individuals in Directive 95/46/EC and Directive 2002/58/EC on Privacy and Electronic communications. Nonetheless, the twenty-?rst century citizen – utilizing the full potential of what ICT-technology has to offer – seems to develop a digital persona that becomes increasingly part of his individual social identity. From this perspective, control over personal information is control over an aspect of the identity one projects in the world. The right to privacy is the freedom from unreasonable constraints on one’s own identity. Transactiondata–bothtraf?candlocationdata–deserveourparticularattention. As we make phone calls, send e-mails or SMS messages, data trails are generated within public networks that we use for these communications. While traf?c data are necessary for the provision of communication services, they are also very sensitive data. They can give a complete picture of a person’s contacts, habits, interests, act- ities and whereabouts. Location data, especially if very precise, can be used for the provision of services such as route guidance, location of stolen or missing property, tourist information, etc. In case of emergency, they can be helpful in dispatching assistance and rescue teams to the location of a person in distress. However, p- cessing location data in mobile communication networks also creates the possibility of permanent surveillance.

Surveillance Privacy And Security written by Michael Friedewald and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-16 with Political Science categories.

This volume examines the relationship between privacy, surveillance and security, and the alleged privacy–security trade-off, focusing on the citizen’s perspective. Recent revelations of mass surveillance programmes clearly demonstrate the ever-increasing capabilities of surveillance technologies. The lack of serious reactions to these activities shows that the political will to implement them appears to be an unbroken trend. The resulting move into a surveillance society is, however, contested for many reasons. Are the resulting infringements of privacy and other human rights compatible with democratic societies? Is security necessarily depending on surveillance? Are there alternative ways to frame security? Is it possible to gain in security by giving up civil liberties, or is it even necessary to do so, and do citizens adopt this trade-off? This volume contributes to a better and deeper understanding of the relation between privacy, surveillance and security, comprising in-depth investigations and studies of the common narrative that more security can only come at the expense of sacrifice of privacy. The book combines theoretical research with a wide range of empirical studies focusing on the citizen’s perspective. It presents empirical research exploring factors and criteria relevant for the assessment of surveillance technologies. The book also deals with the governance of surveillance technologies. New approaches and instruments for the regulation of security technologies and measures are presented, and recommendations for security policies in line with ethics and fundamental rights are discussed. This book will be of much interest to students of surveillance studies, critical security studies, intelligence studies, EU politics and IR in general. Dr. Walker lays out his program on how to become younger which he partly defines as having all or most of the attributes of youth, health, energy, vitality and perpetual laughter on the lips and in the eyes. The key to accessing both more energy and more vitality lies in changing our eating, drinking, and living habits. Dr. Walker encourages people to develop a very definite philosophy he calls Right Thinking, which is maintaining a positive outlook and positive thoughts about themselves and others. Together with the other principles outlined in his program, he offers readers knowledge that gives them the courage to make the changes necessary. Readers are given a brief yet concise introduction to different parts of our anatomy and how these systems work for and against us, depending upon the food we consume. Dr. Walker recommends changing old eating habits to include natural, nourishing foods. The use of juicing, fasting, and eating natural, organic foods in their unprocessed forms, including mostly raw fruits and vegetables, play an important role in maintaining good health. Through his personal observations, experience, and knowledge, Dr. Walker provides the information needed to stay younger.
