Finalist - Sigurd F. Olson Nature Writing Award Finalist - Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment Creative Book Award Finalist - Evans Biography and Handcart Award An ode the extreme landscape of Nevada's Great Basin Desert—its terrain, its wildlife, and how an intrepid father and two little girls have made the wilderness their home Combining natural history, humor, and personal narrative, Raising Wild is an intimate exploration of Nevada’s Great Basin Desert, the wild and extreme land of high desert caliche and juniper, of pronghorn antelope and mountain lions, where wildfires and snowstorms threaten in equal measure. Michael Branch “earned his whiskers” in the Great Basin Desert of northwestern Nevada, in the wild and extreme landscape where he lives off the grid with his wife and two curious little girls. Shifting between pastoral passages on the beauty found in the desert and humorous tales of the humility of being a father, Raising Wild offers an intimate portrait of a landscape where mountain lions and ground squirrels can threaten in equal measure. With Branch’s distinct lyricism and wit, this exceedingly barren landscape becomes a place resonant with the rattle of snakes, the plod of pronghorn antelope, and the rustle of juniper trees, a place that is teeming with energy, surprise, and an endless web of connections. Part memoir, part homage to an environment all-to-often brushed aside as inhospitable, Raising Wild offers an intergenerational approach to nature, family, and the forgotten language of wildness.

Raised in the Wild is a non-fiction book about growing up on an uninhabited barrier island along the South Carolina coastline. The island was privately owned by Richard Reynolds of Reynolds Aluminum Company and only accessible by boat. In 1954, Mr. Reynolds hired my grandfather as caretaker and allowed him and my father to build a small, out of the way house to watch over and maintain his occasional weekend retreat. A few months later our home was complete; a tiny two-bedroom wood structure with gaps in the walls and floor. The domicile was built on top of concrete blocks at the southwestern tip of the island. Twice a month on either a full or new moon, the rising tide brought saltwater over the bank and under the dwelling. Our home was very primitive. We had no indoor plumbing, phone, TV and only minimal power provided single gas generator. All meals and heat source came from a single potbelly wood-burning stove. We were the only residents on Dewees, except for occasional guests of the Reynolds family. The visitors would stay in the fourteen-room lodge, previously build in the mid 1920s and owned by Coulter Huyler. Dad served as the guests' personal hunting and fishing guide, Mom prepared all meals, and after attending school by boat, my brother and I contributed by carrying their luggage and keeping fires stoked. Our life was simple but exciting. We lived off the islands natural resources: wild game and fresh seafood. Whereas most children had dogs and cats for pets, Mark and I played with and raised alligators, snakes and raccoons. Little about our primal, isolated existence could be considered ordinary. The main characters include, Ola Leppert, my mom, Oscar Leppert, my father, Mark Leppert, my younger brother and me. Growing up on Dewees Island provided a host of unforgettable memories. This book is a true life, "Huckleberry Finn" adventure. The outlandish adventures we encountered are assured to keep a readers interest.

Keeping her son safe on this epic journey may be harder than she imagined. Caleb Jackson is on a journey. And not just the mission he and his friends have embarked on to fetch the Nez Perce chief’s runaway daughter. Maybe someday, he could also find God’s plan for his life. He’d once thought being a small town minister was the Lord’s will for him, but he’d proved a failure at living under the scrutiny of his congregation. Yet the chief’s niece and her feisty toddler accompanying them on this expedition make him feel like he might be able to make a difference yet. Otskai is eager to take on a challenge. She’s lived under the shelter of other’s choices her entire life, especially when she was betrothed to one of the village braves at the tender age of eight. Now with her husband dead, she’s finally found the freedom she always craved—even with a two-year-old to raise. She’s built her camas root harvest into a thriving trade to provide all she and her son need and more, yet she can’t seem to keep her active child safe. When she agrees to accompany her new friends on a trip to bring back her wayward cousin, she knows she’ll have her hands full managing her boy. The journey turns out nothing like Otskai expects, and for the first time in her life, she’s thankful to have others around to help. Especially Caleb, whose gentle attentions captivate her son and occupy him for hours at a time. But as the danger escalates and her worst fears come to light, she must find the courage to choose between freedom and a love more liberating than she imagined possible. From a USA Today bestselling author comes another epic journey through breathless landscapes and adventure so intense, lives will never be the same.

Savage Girls And Wild Boys written by Michael Newton and has been published by Macmillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-22 with History categories.

Savage Girls and Wild Boys is a fascinating history of extraordinary children---brought up by animals, raised in the wilderness, or locked up for long years in solitary confinement. Wild or feral children have fascinated us through the centuries, and continue to do so today. In a haunting and hugely readable study, Michael Newton deftly investigates a number of infamous cases. He looks at Peter the Wild Boy, who gripped the attention of Swift and Defoe, and at Victor of Aveyron, who roamed wild in the forests of revolutionary France. He tells the story of a savage girl lost on the streets of Paris, of two children brought up by wolves in the jungles of India, and of a Los Angeles girl who emerged from thirteen years locked in a room to international celebrity. He describes, too, a boy brought up among monkeys in Uganda; and in Moscow, the child found living with a pack of wild dogs. Savage Girls and Wild Boys examines the lives of these children and of the adults who "rescued" them, looked after them, educated, or abused them. How can we explain the mixture of disgust and envy that such children can provoke? And what can they teach us about our notions of education, civilization, and man's true nature?

Behind the success story of being adopted into a family I had no idea about, being fostered by a white woman in another world, a white man's culture, struggling to be a good wife, mother and becoming a successful career woman lies the pain, sorrow, all the agony, hurt and struggle in life to be oneself, to be who you want to be. To maintain your identity and integrity despite all the shame, situations and circumstances Veronica, the Author made it through. Thus, life is meant to be tough, but God had created you to manage it, one's life more effectively and live the kind of life you want to live, to be who and what you want to be in life. Nobody will change that as the power is in your own hands. And, always remembering that there is an Almighty God who created you and knew you. Therefore, you should always seek God first no matter what to know His will and purpose upon your life. As Jeremiah 1:5 says God formed you, knew you, anointed you and sanctified you to be His prophet like He said to His prophet Jeremiah. This is the true meaning of life when you know God's true will and purpose upon your own individual life. Then, love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22) will be restored upon your life. These are the gifts from God that money cannot buy. Peace be with you and glory be to God.

Into The Wilderness written by Sara Donati and has been published by Bantam this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-09-01 with Fiction categories.

Weaving a tapestry of fact and fiction, Sara Donati’s epic novel sweeps us into another time and place . . . and into a breathtaking story of love and survival in a land of savage beauty. It is December of 1792. Elizabeth Middleton leaves her comfortable English estate to join her family in a remote New York mountain village. It is a place unlike any she has ever experienced. And she meets a man unlike any she has ever encountered—a white man dressed like a Native American: Nathaniel Bonner, known to the Mohawk people as Between-Two-Lives. Determined to provide schooling for all the children of the village, Elizabeth soon finds herself locked in conflict with the local slave owners as well as with her own family. Interweaving the fate of the Mohawk Nation with the destiny of two lovers, Sara Donati’s compelling novel creates a complex, profound, passionate portait of an emerging America. Praise for Into the Wilderness “My favorite kind of book is the sort you live in, rather than read. Into the Wilderness is one of those rare stories that let you breathe the air of another time, and leave your footprints on the snow of a wild, strange place. I can think of no better adventure than to explore the wilderness in the company of such engaging and independent lovers as Elizabeth and her Nathaniel.”—Diana Gabaldon “Each time you open a book you hope to discover a story that will make your spirit of adventure and romance sing. This book delivers on that promise.”—Amanda Quick “A beautiful tale of both romance and survival…Here is the beauty as well as the savagery of the wilderness and, at the core of it all, the compelling story of the love of a man and a woman, both for the untamed land and for one another.”—Allan W. Eckert “Lushly written . . . Exemplary historical fiction.”—Kirkus Reviews “Epic in scope, emotionally intense.”—BookPage
