Raising Charlie is the story of a single career mom trying to do her best job at home caring for her two little sons while keeping her career afloat on the job. Like every mother who is left with awesome job of "going it alone", she is tired most of the time, scared all of the time, and overwhelmed by each and every day's surprises. This is also the story of two little boys whose progress encouraged their mom to live beyond her known potential to "get the job done". Their energies were shared in an interesting way. The journey was difficult, necessary and fun beyond words.

Charlie Parker rocketed to fame as the premier jazz saxophonist of the 1940s and 50s. He began his unparalleled rise to greatness in the world of jazz in Kansas City, Missouri, in the mid–1930s. “Bird,” as Parker was known first to his friends and later to the world, honed his early skills on a $45 used alto saxophone bought for him by his mother Addie Parker. The old horn was decrepit. Its valves were always sticking, its pads were always leaking, and it had rubber bands and cellophane paper all over it. Charlie had to hold it sideways to make it blow. But the sound he blew would later dazzle a world of admirers and imitators. Known for his direct, cutting tone and extraordinary dexterity on the alto saxophone, Parker turned rapid tempos and fast flurries of notes into a new kind of music known as bebop or bop. The Bird flew high for two decades, then plunged precipitously to an early death from drug- and alcohol-addiction at the age of 34—a legend then and so he remains today.

What is there to learn from the life of a dog? When their golden retriever, Charlie, was diagnosed with terminal cancer shortly before his tenth birthday, John and Nan Lichty knew that it was just a matter of months before they would lose their beloved companion. Raising Charlie: The Lessons of a Perfect Dog tells the heartbreaking story of their experience. It begins with Charlie coming into their lives as a gift puppy from Nan to John for his fortieth birthday and then flashes forward to the final three months of Charlie's life and the tragedy of his losing battle with osteosarcoma. Charlie's story is filled with insights about dogs, life and love. A chapter is devoted to the lessons Charlie taught John and Nan through the example of his life, with anecdotes supporting each point, and a photo section contains more than a dozen black-and-white images that chronicle Charlie's life. The influence of a good dog in a person's life can never be underestimated. To lose that companionship prematurely is cause for tremendous sadness. If you have ever owned a dog or dreamed of owning one, Raising Charlie will touch you emotionally. Charlie's spirit lives on in its pages.

The best kind of journey, one you don't want to end. . .funny, moving. --Mike Lupica, New York Times bestselling author of Heat In Charlie Carillo's funny, insightful novel, a divorced man gets to know his seventeen-year-old son in a tale that rewrites the book on quality time together. . . Sammy Sullivan is working his way down the ladder of success. Divorced and pushing fifty, his relationships have the longevity of a fruit fly. But how many men can get themselves fired and have their only son expelled from prep school all in one day? Now, after almost eighteen years, he and Jake may finally get to know each other. (That's if his ex-wife--the super-achiever Sammy can only dream of being--doesn't find out.) Jake knows virtually nothing about his roots. So, Sammy shows him the old neighborhood in the far reaches of Queens. But it's been thirty years. The older woman Sammy lost his virginity to now uses a walker to get around. Most of his hangouts are long gone. It's dreary, born-to-lose stuff. But Jake is on a mission. Wise beyond his (and his dad's) years, he doesn't want his father to miss out the second time around on the good things he blew the first time. And they've got a whole weekend together--a journey where Sammy will confront his, dysfunctional childhood and Jake will face a past he never knew he had. This isn't your typical father-son story--one is still growing up. The other is his son. "In the tradition of Tom Perotta, Carillo explores the strength of the family bond, the power of forgiveness, and the hope that comes from embracing second chances. . .truthful, and hilarious."--Alison Grambs, author of The Smart Girls Guide to Getting Even "I don't like funny, touching novels because they make me wish I'd written them myself. I enjoyed Charlie Carillo's book from beginning to end and now I'm miserable." --Sherwood Kiraly, author of Diminished Capacity "A literary romp through the minefields of a totally normal, and totally abnormal, family. . . I actually laughed out loud and kept turning the pages to make absolutely sure that all worked out at the end." --Cathy Lamb, author of Henry's Sisters "Scathingly hilarious and truthful." --Sally Jenkins Queens-born Charlie Carillo, like his protagonist Sam Sullivan, worked at the New York Post as a journalist for many years. He is also the author of My Ride with Gus and divides his time between New York City and London, England, where he works as an independent television producer.

Untangle the financial history of Charlie Haughey, Taoiseach and leader of Fianna Fáil, in Haughey's Millions, the must-read, bestselling exposé of one of Ireland's most controversial politicians Colm Keena, acclaimed Irish Times investigative journalist, examines the extraordinary career of Charlie 'the Boss' Haughey, the backbench TD who became Taoiseach (Prime Minister) and left a financial legacy that lingered long after his retirement from political life. As a politician, Haughey made a huge contribution to Irish life: he played a key role in the Northern Ireland peace process and he laid the foundations for the prosperity that arrived with the Celtic Tiger. But Haughey's Millions does not deal with Haughey's political history; instead Keena uncovers the subject that Haughey most wanted to avoid and you'll most want to read: the truth about his money. From elections to tribunal appearances, Haughey dominated the Irish political landscape from the '60s to the '90s and always lived visibly beyond his means. From his princely accommodation in Kinsealy to his penchant for horses, Haughey's extravagant spending made him look like a rich man on a TD's salary. In Haughey's Millions, Keena traces the origins of Haughey's lavish lifestyle back to the '50s and to his early life as a partner in Haughey, Boland & Co. Moving chronologically forward, Keena looks at Haughey's early involvement with Des Traynor and his developing relationships with property developers and other key entrepreneurs and business figures. Keena's investigations take him up to the Moriarty and McCracken tribunals of the mid-'90s, set up to investigate the alleged financial corruption at the heart of Haughey's infamous political reign. Under the microscope of Keena's investigations, Haughey's financial dealings are revealed. In Haughey's Millions, Keena gives you the whole tangled story of a politician who lived like a prince, from beginning to ignominious end.
