For better or worse, richer or poorer, in sickness and in health I'm married to the notion that a personal relationship with God as essential to my life. I can't be alone in this. There must be others with this still small voice' running through there heads demanding relationship with God. So, in an effort to find them, provoke them to seek greater depth in their own spirituality and to break through the notion that you have to be a saint to communicate with the Almighty, I decided to share this experience using a character out of scripture as a 'straw man' for my thoughts; Jonah the Prophet to Nineveh. I ve spent the last eleven years arguing, cajoling, praising and bargaining with God as Jonah. "You don't really talk with God, do you?", you might ask with an eye toward my sanity. "Oh, I talk with God." I'd answer. "In fact, I sometimes yell at him and sometimes I cry when His touch becomes too ℜ but I'm certainly no saint." That's the point. You don't have to be a saint to experience this personal relationship with God through Christ and the Holy Spirit. In persecution or success, in feast or famine, in good times or bad, in spiritual growth or decadent deterioration, in Jonahs time or ours, this one-on-one relationship is our constant. And praise is always our worship. For those who have this, there is no wavering or fear. I must warn you that sometimes my Jonah is belligerent, ungrateful and unwilling- much like me. But through it all, God loved Jonah. Good to know. For God loves you uniquely. He sent His son to save you, personally. And the Holy Spirit nudges you as a precious child of God.

How did African Americans gain the ability to apply Gandhian nonviolence during the civil rights movement? Responses generally focus on Martin Luther King's "pilgrimage to nonviolence" or favorable social contexts and processes. This book, in contrast, highlights the role of collective learning in the Gandhian repertoire's transnational diffusion. Collective learning shaped the invention of the Gandhian repertoire in South Africa and India as well as its transnational diffusion to the United States. In the 1920s, African Americans and their allies responded to Gandhi's ideas and practices by reproducing stereotypes. Meaningful collective learning started with translation of the Gandhian repertoire in the 1930s and small-scale experimentation in the early 1940s. After surviving the doldrums of the McCarthy era, full implementation of the Gandhian repertoire finally occurred during the civil rights movement between 1955 and 1965. This book goes beyond existing scholarship by contributing deeper and finer insights on how transnational diffusion between social movements actually works. It highlights the contemporary relevance of Gandhian nonviolence and its successful journey across borders.

"The literature on Gandhi and Martin Luther King is vast, and scholars often speak of the two leaders when discussing theories of non-violence. Yet, no attempt has yet been made to understand the way in which Gandhi and King's socio-political ideas converge in terms of their origins, development and application. In Confluence of Thought, Bidyut Chakrabarty argues that there is a confluence of thought between Gandhi and King's concerns for humanity and advocacy of non-violence, despite their different historical and socio-economic contexts. He says that these two figures are perhaps the best modern historical examples of individuals who combined religion with the political to produce a dynamic social ideology. Gandhi saw service to humanity as the path to 'self-actualization' and thus spiritually most fulfilling; similarly, King pursued religion-driven social action.
