Miss Llewellyn was standing at the window of her own room, in the house of Lord Ilfracombe in Grosvenor Square, gazing at the dust-laden and burnt-up leaves and grass in the gardens before her. It was an afternoon towards the close of July, and all the fashionable world was already out of town. Miss Llewellyn had been reared in the country, and she could not help thinking how that same sun that had burnt up all the verdure of which London could boast, had glorified the vegetation of far-off Wales. How it must have enriched the pasture lands, and ripened the waving corn, and decked the very hedges and ditches with beautiful, fresh flowers, which were to be had for the gathering. Her thoughts went back to rural Usk where King Arthur built a bower for Guinevere, and in fancy she felt the cool air blowing over its fragrant fields and woods. She heaved a deep sigh as she remembered the place of her birth, and, as if in reproach for such heresy to her present condition, she drew a letter from her pocket and opened its pages. Miss Llewellyn nominally held an inferior position in the house of the Earl of Ilfracombe. She was his housekeeper. Old-fashioned people who associate their ideas of a housekeeper with the image of a staid, middle-aged woman, whose sole business is to guard the morals and regulate the duties of the maidens of the establishment, would have stared at the notion of calling Miss Llewellyn by that name. All the same she was a very fair specimen of the up-to-date housekeeper of a rich bachelor of the present time, with one exception, perhaps. She was handsome beyond the majority of women. Her figure was a model. Tall and graceful without being thin, with a beautiful bust and shoulders, and a skin like white satin, Miss Llewellyn also possessed a face such as is seldom met with, even in these isles of boasted female beauty. Her features would have suited a princess. They were those of a carved Juno. Her abundant rippling hair was of a bright chestnut colour; her eyes dark hazel, like the tawny eyes of the leopardess; her lips full and red; and her complexion naturally as radiant as it usually is with women of her nationality, though London air had toned it down to a pale cream tint. She was quietly, but well-dressed, too well dressed for one in her station of life perhaps, but that would depend on the wages she earned and the appearance she was expected to make. Her gown of some light black material, like mousseline-de-laine, or canvas cloth, was much trimmed with lace, and on her wrists she wore heavy gold bangles. Her beautiful hair was worn in the prevailing fashion, and round her white throat was a velvet band, clasped by a diamond brooch. The room, too, which Miss Llewellyn occupied, and which was exclusively her own, was far beyond what we should associate with the idea of a dependant. It was a species of half study, half boudoir, and on the drawing-room floor, furnished by Liberty, and replete with every comfort and luxury. Yet Miss Llewellyn did not look out of place in it; on the contrary, she would have graced a far handsomer apartment by her presence. To whatever station of life she had been brought up, it was evident that circumstances, or habit, had made her quite familiar with her surroundings. As she perused the letter she drew from her pocket for perhaps the twentieth time she looked rather pale and anxious, as though she did not quite comprehend its meaning. Yet it seemed a very ordinary epistle, and one which anybody might have read over her shoulder with impunity. It was written in rather an irregular and unformed hand for a man of thirty, and showed symptoms of a wavering and unsteadfast character.

Kun se aukaisi täyteläiset kukkaterttunsa, oli se todella kuin morsian. Silmä katsoi sitä katsomistaan saamatta siitä kyllikseen. Oli kuin kesän koko ihanuus olisi hivellyt katsetta sen häikäisevässä valkeudessa. Tyytyväinen hymy nousi väreilemään rovastin lempeillä kasvoilla. Hän oikaisi kepillään pientä, maahan painunutta metsätähteä samalla kuin toisella hätisteli hyttysiä luotaan, tasaisesti ja hiljaa kuin mahdollisimman vähän häiritäkseen heidän kesäiloaan. Sitten hän uudelleen katseli ympärilleen nauttivasti tyytyväisenä kuin herkuilla nälkäänsä asetteleva lapsi. Tukassa hänellä jo oli paljon harmaita haivenia kasvoissa vielä enemmän vuosien sinne uurtamia ryppyjä. Monta kymmentä kertaa hän jo oli seurannut tätä luonnon puhkeamista keväästä kesäksi. Mutta aina se vaikutti hänen sisimpäänsä samalla vastustamattomalla voimalla. Sielu eli mukana luonnon heräämisessä. Mitä silloin merkitsivät pään harmahtavat haivenet? — Ai, ai, joko minä nyt taas!… Rovasti havahtui kuin unesta ja alkoi astua keputella männikön toiselle puolelle, missä uusi riihi oli kohoamassa pellon laitaan. Pari miestä paitahihasillaan ja otsa hiessä oli nostamassa seinää. — Taitaa tulla kuuma, liiaksikin, puheli rovasti tervehdittyään. — Ei ole työ hauskaa huonolla säällä, mutta ei ole helppo helteessäkään kirvestä heilutella. — Eihän se sen puolesta. — Toinen miehistä pyyhkäisi otsaansa. — Mutta tehtävä on. Mitenkäpä meikäläinen muuten tulisi toimeen! Toinenkin miehistä lakkasi tasoittelemasta hirrenkylkeä. — Olisi vähän tarvis rahaa. Juhannuskin on tulossa, sanoi hän harvakseen. Rovastin käsi tapaili kohta kukkaroa housuntaskusta. — Vai rahaa. Sellaisia lapsia ei saa hyleksiä. Elämä on heille muutenkin kovaa. Koskinen työnteli vastaamatta rahoja kukkaroonsa. Sitten käsi kiitokseksi nousi sipaisemaan lakin reunaa niin, että lakki työntyi kappaleen matkaa niskaan. Kohta sen jälkeen heilahti jo kirves ja lastut alkoivat sinkoilla. Rovastin silmä jäi ihailevasti silmäilemään työnalla olevaa puuta. Se oli oikein ensiluokan hirsiä ja sen valkoinen kylki paistoi auringon valossa. Pihkaa oli pursunut esille muutamasta halkeamasta. Tuoreen puun tuoksu ja pihkan haju sekottuivat lauhaan tuulenviimaan, joka hyväilevän kepeästi pyyhkäisi ohi. Tuossa kaikessa oli kuin elämän ja kesän ylistystä. Rovasti tunsi sen. This study examines the narrative tools, techniques, and structures that Marja-Liisa Vartio, a classic of Finnish post-war modernism, used in presenting fictional minds in her narrative prose. The study contributes to the academic discussion on formal and thematic conventions of modernism by addressing the ways in which fictional minds work in interaction, and in relation to the enfolding fictional world. The epistemic problem of how accurately the world, the self, and the other can be known is approached by analyzing two co-operating ways of portraying fictional minds, both from external and internal perspectives. The external perspective relies on detachment and emotional restraint dominating in Vartio’s early novels Se on sitten kevät and Mies kuin mies, tyttö kuin tyttö. The internal perspective pertains to the mental processes of self-reflection, speculation, and excessive imagining that gain more importance in her later novels Kaikki naiset näkevät unia, Tunteet, and Hänen olivat linnut. In the theoretical chapter of this study, fictional minds are discussed in the context of the acclaimed “inward turn” of modernist fiction, by suggesting alternative methods for reading modernist minds as embodied, emotional, and social entities. In respect to fictional minds’ interaction, this study elaborates on the ideas of “mind-reading,” “intersubjectivity,” and the “social mind” established within post-classical cognitive narratology. Furthermore, it employs possible world poetics when addressing the complexity, incompleteness, and (in)accessibility of Vartio’s epistemic worlds, including the characters’ private worlds of knowledge, beliefs, emotions, hallucinations, and dreams. In regards to the emotional emplotment of fictional worlds, this study also benefits from affective narratology as well as the plot theory being influenced by possible world semantics, narrative dynamics, and cognitive narratology. As the five analysis chapters of this study show, fictional minds in Vartio’s fiction are not only introspective, solipsist, and streaming, but also embodied and social entities. In the readings of the primary texts, the concept of embodiedness is used to examine the situated presence of an experiencing mind within the time and space of the storyworld. Fictional minds’ (inter)actions are also demonstrated as evolving from local experientiality to long-term calculations that turn emotional incidents into episodes, and episodes into stories. In Vartio’s novels, the emotional story structure of certain conventional story patterns, such as the narratives of female development and the romance plot, the sentimental novel, and epistolary fiction, are modified and causally altered in the portrayal of the embodied interactions between the self, the other, and the world. The trajectories of female self-discovery in Vartio’s novels are analyzed through the emotional responses of characters: their experiences of randomness, their ways of counterfactualizing their traumatic past, their procrastinatory or akratic reactions or indecisiveness. The gradual move away from the percepts of the external world to the excessive imaginings and (mis)readings of other minds (triggered by the interaction of worlds and minds), challenges the contemporary and more recent accounts of modernism both in Finnish and international contexts.
