Siamo nel Regno di Napoli, a cavallo tra il 1300 e il 1400. Ramondello è il figlio cadetto del conte Orsini. Suo padre gli ha programmato una carriera ecclesiastica, ma lui è innamorato perso di una fanciulla destinata a diventare contessa e non si arrende a un destino che non vuole. Trova una sponda amica in Ramondo del Balzo, fratello di sua nonna. Il prozio, che non ha avuto figli, gli risolve tutti i problemi designandolo suo successore. Unica condizione per ereditare le sue fortune è che Ramondello aggiunga al proprio cognome anche quello del suo benefattore. Ma le cose non vanno secondo i piani e il ragazzo si trova costretto a partire come scudiero per le crociate del Nord, senza poter dare nemmeno un ultimo saluto alla sua amata. Il romanzo è liberamente ispirato alla vita di Raimondello Orsini del Balzo che, da semplice scudiero, fu proclamato cavaliere, tornò a Napoli e, di conquista in conquista, diventò il signore più importante del regno, secondo soltanto al re. É una storia di amori, amicizie, tradimenti, conflitti familiari e battaglie avventurose. C'è spazio anche per delle incursioni nel mondo della cavalleria teutonica e nei misteri del Santo Graal. Il tutto, sullo sfondo storico della disputa tra due re pretendenti al trono di Napoli e dello scisma d'Occidente, con una Chiesa cattolica retta contemporaneamente da due papi in conflitto tra loro. Una storia antica ma con molte curiose analogie con la contemporaneità e le sue incertezze.
