Ein Vergleich der koptischen Quellen mit den alteren Weisheitslehren lasst erkennen, dass die Autoren und Rezipienten unterschiedlichen Gesellschaftsschichten zugehorten, was die Annahme eines Traditionsflusses erschwert. Die demotischen Spruchsammlungen stehen den koptischen Texten naher, wohl weil sie nicht nur an eine privilegierte Schicht gerichtet sind, sondern auch einer modifi zierten Theologie folgen. Trotz ausserer Ahnlichkeiten mit agyptischen Lehren sind unterschiedliche Akzente greifbar, die nicht von einer direkten Rezeption agyptischen Gedankengutes, ja sogar von einem Bruchreden lassen. An Stelle einer kontinuierlichen Tradierung ist also eher eine "parallele Entwicklung von gewissen Archetypen des Verhaltens" anzunehmen.
