In 1957, Art Linkletter, a radio and television personality, wrote a book, "Kids Say The Darnedest Things!" based on his interviews with small people. Now, here comes Sue Tebow with, in my opinion, an even better and funnier book "Real Farm & Ranch Kids- Real-life Photos and Little Stories from over 100 Country Kids." This is a collection of "interviews" with small boys and girls, who live, work, and love their ranching life and the animals that they care for. Sue has captured each youngster and their zest and understanding of their life on a ranch or a farm by simply listening. In a world filled with tragic stories of children falling through the cracks, this book will assure you that, out on the prairies and vast spaces of the West, there still lives a work ethic passed down through the generations. These kids are not only funny; they are smart, imaginative, and completely self-reliant.Sue Tebow is the perfect person to have collected these stories. She lives on a ranch in Eastern Washington, raising alfalfa and cattle. She has a very popular Facebook page - agri.CULTURE (I am one of her more than 25,000 ardent followers) and has made it her mission for the last five years to write a story about someone in ranching or farming every day. I am so glad that she included these "real farmers"! You will be too!

Drop a sleeping bag into the back of a pickup truck, not required but recommended; and drive north, out of the crowd, past the monotony of vineyards, over the curving mountain highway, onto a narrow winding asphalt quilt. Bits of rock rattle into your fender wells, as your tires roll onto a washboard gravel road and a dusty rooster tail whirls against your tailgate. After a while off to your left a gap in the wild oaks that line the roadside afford you a glimpse of Jerusalem Valley. A narrow stream snakes through a rocky riverbed. Sunlight flashes off the frame of dark solar panels that show you she's off the grid. Suddenly a solitary signpost appears with the word Oasis painted lazily across its face. Sliding to a stop, the dust cloud envelopes the pickup. When it clears you may blink or squint, as you get your first look at the straw bale ranch house. This is where Ranch Stories begin. A chicken named Bug, a bare encounter with a bear and burrs in her panties. All things that creep and crawl, observed in league with the nimble curiosity of the cat that is her constant companion. These stories take us on a journey of discovery, laughter, heartbreak and rebirth, experienced by a woman on her own, in her own personal wilderness. Using vivid imagery humor and drama, Linda Drew leads us from the valley to the mountain, introducing us to a plethora of interesting creatures, man and beast along the way. Vignettes, poems and even a mouth watering recipe make up a well rounded rhythmic read.

Helen Tiegs didn't take to driving a tractor when she became a farmer's wife, but after fifty years she considers herself the hub of the family operation. Lila Hill taught piano, then ultimately took a job off the farm to augment the family income during a period of rising costs. From Montana's cattle pastures to New Mexico's sagebrush mesas, women on today's ranches and farms have played a crucial role in a way of life that is slowly disappearing from the western landscape. Recalling her own family-farm ties, Sandra Schackel set out to learn how these women's lives have changed over the second half of the twentieth century. In Working the Land, she collects oral histories from more than forty women—in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Oregon, and Texas—recalling their experiences as ranchers and farmers in a modernizing West. Through this diverse group of women—white and Hispanic, rich and poor, ranging in age from 24 to 83—we gain a new perspective on their ties to the land. Although western ranch and farm women have often been portrayed as secondary figures who devoted themselves to housekeeping in support of their husbands' labors, Schackel's interviews reveal that these women have had a much more active role in defining what we know as the modern American West. As Schackel listened to their stories, she found several currents running through their recollections, such as the satisfaction found in living the rural lifestyle and the flexibility of gender roles. She also learned how resourceful women developed new ways to make their farms work—by including tourism, summer camps, and bed-and-breakfast operations—and how many have become activists for land-based issues. And while some like Lila made the difficult decision to work off the farm, such sacrifices have enabled families to hold onto their beloved land. Rich with memory and insight into what makes America's family farms and ranches tick, Working the Land provides a deeper understanding of the West's development over the last fifty years along with new perspectives on shifting attitudes toward women in the workforce. It is both a long-overdue documentation of the lives of hard-working farm women and a celebration of their contributions to a truly American way of life.

When I read stories of women on ranches, I wonder if I should consider myself a ranch woman at all. I lost that life when I was twenty years old. Then I realize in my heart I have never left the ranch. It is where I will always be. If you’d ever lived a cowboy life, it will forever define who you are. Those years defined who I am from my work ethic to my love of being outdoors and alone. The spirit of the west is alive and well in me. I’ve worked to turn every place I’ve ever lived into Sunnyside. By reading the stories I’ve written, I’m hoping my readers will feel some connection to a life I thought was so special.
