The Old Cowboys Try To Take A Herd Of Cattle North To The Rail Head. As usual they meet some interesting characters along the way. Some yodel-some have flash backs. And of course some rustlers try their luck.-----------------I looked right at Big Jim and said,"I couldn't find a bill of sale. And anyway you know that was a fake I.O.U, Jim. You get no horses here, but we got plenty of lead if you want some."He sat there on his horse, for a few moments; I knew he was figuring the odds on what to do. The five men, he had with him had been easing their horses into position; It was very plain what they had in mind. Jim finally got the action started."Well ok sonny, we will just be going," said big Jim.But he didn't go.------------------This was part of the Texas hill country, plenty of places for wild stock to hide. And these were wild cattle we went after, they were mean too. After scores of years, the descendants of the Spanish cattle were numbered in the millions. And they were plenty spooky; they could hear you coming for two miles. Some of the things they did to hide, was almost human, in its planning. The sly and cunning, hiding tricks made it look, as if they had been schooled. The wild Cattle executed the hide and seek tactics with military smoothness. And they would hide in places that a rabbit couldn't fit in. How, they did that is a mystery. But it did them no good to hide, we needed them. We were going north, and they were going north too. There was one old trick we used a lot; fence off some waterholes, and don't let them drink. After a few days, there were, quite a few, waiting in line for water. It was necessary, in part, to let them get used to seeing us. So we kept them from water until their tongue was hanging out, then we let them drink. While they were getting a drink we closed the pole and brush fence around them. Now, a few more days of seeing us ride around them, and it was, much easier to herd them. After this treatment we corralled them in a central location. Adding more each week or so. They had plenty of water and feed where we held them, and would stay put better. --------------- "What is that guy trying to do"? Frank asked I said "I didn't know, why don't we stop and ask him, we might learn something."He was just sitting on the log, mumbling and cussing. It looked like he was trying to lift his leg. He did that over and over. "Hell he is just drunk cookie said." He had stopped the chuck wagon and was watching the man too. Slim cut out from the herd and started to watch. Then Asa decided he needed to be in on it. This was getting to be a problem."Why don't you boys go back to work, and watch the cows, and don't let them, come over here, and watch him too." It didn't really prove to be that interesting though. Cookie was right he was just drunk, or had been the night before, therein laid the problem. I asked him if he needed help getting up. He replied "I am not trying to stand up; I just want to lift my leg up some, I need to do something." "Well you look like you need help to stand, I said."He assured me again, he didn't want to stand up."Well what the hell, are you, trying to do"? I asked him. Then he finally came out with it. "All I want to do is lift my leg so I can kick myself in the head. I got drunk last night and fired all my cowboys. Now I got 500 head of cows and no help to do the job, of trail driving." "Well-well" we said, imagine thet"

“Thompson-Hernández's portrayal of Compton's black cowboys broadens our perception of Compton's young black residents, and connects the Compton Cowboys to the historical legacy of African Americans in the west. An eye-opening, moving book.”—Margot Lee Shetterly, New York Times bestselling author of Hidden Figures “Walter Thompson-Hernández has written a book for the ages: a profound and moving account of what it means to be black in America that is awe inspiring in its truth-telling and limitless in its empathy. Here is an American epic of black survival and creativity, of terrible misfortune and everyday resilience, of grace, redemption and, yes, cowboys.”— Junot Díaz, Pulitzer prize-winning author of This is How You Lose Her A rising New York Times reporter tells the compelling story of The Compton Cowboys, a group of African-American men and women who defy stereotypes and continue the proud, centuries-old tradition of black cowboys in the heart of one of America’s most notorious cities. In Compton, California, ten black riders on horseback cut an unusual profile, their cowboy hats tilted against the hot Los Angeles sun. They are the Compton Cowboys, their small ranch one of the very last in a formerly semirural area of the city that has been home to African-American horse riders for decades. To most people, Compton is known only as the home of rap greats NWA and Kendrick Lamar, hyped in the media for its seemingly intractable gang violence. But in 1988 Mayisha Akbar founded The Compton Jr. Posse to provide local youth with a safe alternative to the streets, one that connected them with the rich legacy of black cowboys in American culture. From Mayisha’s youth organization came the Cowboys of today: black men and women from Compton for whom the ranch and the horses provide camaraderie, respite from violence, healing from trauma, and recovery from incarceration. The Cowboys include Randy, Mayisha’s nephew, faced with the daunting task of remaking the Cowboys for a new generation; Anthony, former drug dealer and inmate, now a family man and mentor, Keiara, a single mother pursuing her dream of winning a national rodeo championship, and a tight clan of twentysomethings--Kenneth, Keenan, Charles, and Tre--for whom horses bring the freedom, protection, and status that often elude the young black men of Compton. The Compton Cowboys is a story about trauma and transformation, race and identity, compassion, and ultimately, belonging. Walter Thompson-Hernández paints a unique and unexpected portrait of this city, pushing back against stereotypes to reveal an urban community in all its complexity, tragedy, and triumph. The Compton Cowboys is illustrated with 10-15 photographs.

The cowboy has long been romanticized. We seem to feel that the "good" cowboy must be a heroic figure who always has a likeable but bumbling sidekick, and who, against all odds, saves the fair maiden, the bank, the stagecoach payroll, and the entire town, simultaneously, with snap shots of almost unbelievable accuracy from his must-be-hundred-shot revolver, all the while riding his horse wearing his white, ten-gallon hat, strumming his guitar and singing, "Oh, Bury Me Not on the Lone Prairie," in a memorable baritone. If the cowboy wasn't a Good Guy, he had to be a "bad" guy - an Outlaw. You could always tell the Outlaw from the Good Guy -- the Outlaw wore a black hat, was named something like "Bad Curly Jack," and was forbidden from riding a white horse: The Lone Ranger's horse, Silver, would never let the Outlaw climb into his saddle! Only a few occupations were open to the Outlaw -- rustling cattle, robbing trains, banks, and stagecoach payroll, or stealing the Greenhorn's or City Slicker's stake by cheating at the widly-popular cowboy card game, Go Fish. Rustling cattle was the most popular occupation because if a duststorm or blizzard came up, the Outlaw could always eat some of his booty. Cash ill-gotten by robbing a bank, for example, was easier to transport, but if you were trying to stay warm on a cold, winter night, you couldn't get a long-lasting fire by burning greenbacks. The The Outlaw wasn't always bad, either. While he was a deadly shot when shooting at the average man, he deliberately missed the Good Guy. And, even if he kidnapped the pretty bank teller, he would treat her with great courtesy, even in the worst of times. It is not widely known that an Outlaw who rustled cattle AND kidnapped a pretty bank teller would always offer her the choice piece of beef when the blizzard struck and they were pinned down. The book offered here discusses what actually made a "cowboy," as well as describing cowboy weaponry, clothing, saddles and equipment; the "cowboy character"; and a cowboy's work. Rollins also describes the history of ranching in the United States, the raising of horses and cattle, livestock rustling, and more. This edition of the book contains 18 western cowboy illustrations that are unique to this edition of the book.Philip Ashton Rollins participated in two cattle drives as a teenager and spent six months on the Cheyenne Indians' Dakota reservation. Educated as a lawyer in the East, he regularly returned to visit and study the West firsthand. He in the author of several books on cowboys and the West, including Jinglebob, and Gone Haywire, in addition to the book offered here: a non-fiction work, abbreviated, "The Cowboy."* This is a pre-1923 historical reproduction that was curated for quality. Erickson's articles and essays have been published in Texas Highways, Livestock Weekly, The Dallas Morning News, The Dallas Times Herald, and American Cowboy . This collection is arranged by Place; From Buffalo to Cattle; The Cowboy; Cowboy Tools; Ranch and Rodeo; Animals; and This and That. Many of the pieces are anecdotal, based on Erickson's experiences and observations on ranches. Others required some research and are more historical. Some are essays in which Erickson views contemporary life through the lens of cowboying. But all of them are vintage master storyteller John Erickson, told with humor and thoughtfulness.

This book is a compilation of a few of my "cowboy" poems. It is a diverse mixture of topics about ranching and cowboyin.' They vary from purely fictional, such as "Team Ropers From Hell" and "Another Hundred Years," to poems based on real experiences, such as, "Crossin' the Gila" and "The Dog Is Smellin' My Saddle." Some are inspirational like "Between the Doors," and "A Cowboy's Savior." Still others are more humorous, such as "There's A Cowboy At the Gate," "Leavin' Town," and "My Talkin' Horse" which fits in the "slightly weird" category along with one of my grandaughter's favorites "The Window." Rick Huff, a nationally recognized reviewer of Western Music and Cowboy Poetry recently gave this book a very enthusiastic review. He said "Hooker is ranch-raised and one heckuva poet, as he proves in 'A Cowboy Spirit.'" He went on to say, "This one is special. Make the effort to find it." "True West Magazine" chose "A Cowboy Spirit" as Best Western Poetry Book for 2014, in their January issue. I truly believe there's poems for everyone in my collection. I hope you find some you like.

As Chief Sitting Bull stepped up on the porch, he turned to face the crowd. "My friends," he began by sweeping his right arm around, encompassing all in attendance, "I am called Sitting Bull, war chief of the Lakota Sioux, but it was not always so. My mother and father named me at birth Jumping Badger. My name was changed to Sitting Bull after my coming-of-age vision. My ancestors and I grew up in the sacred Black Hills of Dakota, where we lived happily for many thousands of years. And then the white eyes came. We lived by our own tribal law and the law of the great spirit which is true, and just then the Great White Father in Washington said he wanted all of our land for themselves, and the yellow iron found on it, then sending Yellow Hair Custer to our land to find the yellow iron, breaking our treaties, which we had signed many times but was broken each time by the white man, not us. They told us, upon threat of war and death, to give up our sacred land and go live on the white man's reservation. They said we must send our children to white man's school, learn the white man's ways, forget the ways of our fathers and grandfathers, plow the Mother Earth, they wanted our weapons turned over to the blue coats, these things we could not do. As any man worth his small ration of salt would do, even as the white eyes have done in their civil war, we fought for our freedom."

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: A, San Diego State University, course: Modern American Literature and Culture, language: English, abstract: Broncho Billy, Billy the Kid, Buffalo Bill - there hardly seems to be anyone in the world who has never heard about the heroes of American Western culture. Nowadays, cowboys are considered to be the embodiment of freedom and independence. Whereas cowboys have existed for hundreds of years, however, their image has changed over the centuries. In the 18thand 19thcentury, ‘cow boys’ were considered bad guys as they were bandits who remorselessly ambushed colonial farmers. It was not until the period after the Civil War that the word cowboy attained a positive connotation, being associated with rough men on horses who herded cattle. In the course of time, the cowboy figure was glorified and became a symbol of the American spirit. A plague in the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Wyoming summarizes the glorification as it reads: “The cowboy is a mythic character in America. We admire him for his independence, his honesty, his modesty and courage. He represents the best in all Americans as he stares down evil and says, ‘When you call me that, smile’.” When the motion picture was invented at the end of the 19th century, some of the first silent movies were documentations about cowboys, embodying the frontier spirit of the American culture, which has always been connected to the westward expansion of civilisation and the conquest of new unknown territories. Thus both the frontier and “the Western oppose[s] Wilderness to Civilization” as Will Wright puts it in his book Six Guns and Society. Edwin Porter’s The Great Train Robberycame to be the first Western narrating a story and fascinated the audience. In the following years, Western movies were most popular among the audience and were consequently produced in large numbers. Still today, they rank among the most beloved movie genres. Although the movie genre Western did not always stay at the peak of success, however, the boom was revived on a large scale in the 1950s. In this paper, I will try to reveal the fascination implicated in Western movies and analyse the figure of the cowboy against the background of the 1950s. In doing so, I will include the investigation of gender roles and the effects Westerns had on society. Casually, I will also draw on the popular TV Western series Gunsmoke which ought to serve as a demonstrative example. As far as the movie genre Western is concerned, the era of the 1950s was shaped by radical changes. [...]

A true-to-life narrative of the escapades and challenges of the frontier’s legendary event: the cowboy cattle drive. The Log of a Cowboy brings to life an important, yet short-lived, piece of the American Old West. It’s here that the cowboy earned his reputation and admiration, and it’s through protagonist Tommy Moore that we learn of some of the challenges of the legendary cattle drive. Run-ins with Indian tribes, cattle hustlers, shoot-’em-ups, and the lure of “good whiskey and bad women,” are just some of the troubles that Moore faces, all told with that classic cowboy swagger. It’s not just the thrill of adventure that makes this such a fascinating tale; The Log of a Cowboy is often seen as a narrative of Andy Adams’s own life after twelve years in the saddle, and although some liberties were taken, it remains one of the most reliable accounts ever written, helping cement the lawless, and revered, Wild West into a national subconscious. Through Moore we learn cowboy colloquialisms like “drifting” and “cutting,” the perils of stampedes, and the innate intuition of these frontier men. Adams deftly weaves stories within a story, bringing fabled cattleman Shanghai Pierce into this literary world, spinning tales of occult sciences, hitchhiking ox, and astonishing “bear signs.” Much like the Pony Express, the cattle drives of the Old West remain an essential part of American culture, and Adams’s narrative helps to keep it alive through the generations. This is a must-read for any fans of the Old West, a time when courage and adventure were all part of a day’s work. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction that takes place in the old West. Westerns—books about outlaws, sheriffs, chiefs and warriors, cowboys and Indians—are a genre in which we publish regularly. Our list includes international bestselling authors like Zane Gray and Louis L’Amour, and many more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.
