Among the great figures of the Italian Renaissance, Raphael (1483-1520) is unarguably the artist who has been most widely and consistently admired across the centuries. He had an extraordinary and perhaps unrivaled capacity for self-reinvention--as he progressed from Umbria to Florence and Rome--and an ability to draw strength from the other great artists around him, seemingly growing in stature the more daunting the competition became. This insightful, impeccably researched, and comprehensive volume, published to mark the 500th anniversary of Raphael's death, chronicles the progress of his career in all its richness and complexity. Sumptuous production values and generous illustrations go hand in hand with its rigorous and wide-ranging scholarship. The essays explore Raphael's paintings and drawings, his frescoes in the Vatican Stanze, his designs for tapestries, sculptures, and prints, and his engagement with architecture, art theory, and archaeology. Detailed and authoritative catalogue entries examine many of the finest of Raphael's individual paintings and drawings alongside prints, tapestries, and sculpture.

The Renaissance artist Raphael is known for his extraordinary frescoes, his sublime Madonnas, devotional altarpieces, architectural designs, and his inventive designs for prints and tapestries. It was his use of ancient Roman art—the sculptures, the marble reliefs, the wall-paintings, and the stuccoes—and architecture—the temples, the palaces, and the theaters—as well as the churches and mosaics of early-Christian Rome, that formed his much-admired classical style. In Raphael and the Antique, Claudia La Malfa gives a full account of Raphael’s prodigious career, from central Italy when he was seventeen years old, to Perugia, Siena, and Florence, where he first met with Leonardo and Michelangelo, to Rome where he became one of the most feted artists of the Renaissance. This book brings to light Raphael’s reinvention of classical models, his draftsmanship, and his concept of art—ideas he pursued and was still striving to perfect at the time of his death in 1520 at the young age of thirty-seven.

Raphael is one of the rare artists who have never gone out of fashion. Acclaimed during his lifetime, he was imitated by contemporaries and served as a model for painters through the nineteenth century. Because of the artist's renown, his works have continuously been subject to care, conservation, and restoration. In this book, Cathleen Hoeniger focuses on the legacy of Raphael's art: the historical trajectory - or "afterlife" - of the paintings themselves. The appreciation of Raphael was expressed and the restoration of his works debated in contemporary treatises, which provide a backdrop for probing the fortune of his paintings. What happened to his panel-paintings and frescoes in the centuries after his death in 1520? Some were lost altogether; others were severely damaged in natural disasters; and many were affected by uncontrolled climactic conditions, by travel from one place to another, and by the not always cautious and careful hands of restorers. This book reveals the five-hundred-year story of many of Raphael's most well-known paintings.

Raphael: Complete Paintings Detailed Analysis with High Quality Images "Hardworking and Talented"If someone wanted me to describe Raphael in two words, I would use "Hardworking and Talented".Born in a small town of Urbino in Italy, Raphael raised himself as the most successful painter of his age. Raphael was so good, not much later he would begin working under the Pope in Rome, creating another masterpiece every year. They even had given his name to a room in Vatican (Raphael's Room) because he had decorated the walls of the room with four incredibly charming frescos. In his short life (37 years), Raphael created countless paintings and drawings; in addition to his architectural projects. He had never spent a day idle. Raphael was always on the pursuit of the impossible, and the impossible he achieved."The School of Athens", "The Sistine Madonna", "The Transfiguration", "La Fornarina" and many more... How shameful it is for one to say "I know nothing about Raphael's works." when the information is only one click away from your fingers. Get this book, and learn all there it is to learn about Raphael's masterpieces. Remember, you can always return the book if you don't like it!

A tribute to the master of Urbino on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of his death. The most important exhibition devoted to the painter in 2020. Published in collaboration with the greatest museums in the world, this monograph proposes an original journey backwards, "à rebour", in the universe of Raphael, where his relationship with the ancient and with Rome guides the reader in an unprecedented journey from the artist's death in 1520 to his formative years between Urbino, Città di Castello, Perugia and Siena. The monograph - published on the occasion of the major exhibition in Rome - has a scientific committee of excellence, composed by Matteo Lafranconi, Marzia Faietti, Sylvia Ferino, Alan Brown, Dominique Cordellier, Guido Cornini, Francesco Paolo Di Teodoro, Vincenzo Farinella, Achim Gnann, Barbara Jatta, Alessandro Nova, Nicholas Penny, Mario Scalini, Alessandro Viscogliosi; each member of the committee is the curator of one section of the catalogue which is introduced by his essay and accompanied by the entries of the works. For centuries Raphael (1483-1520) has been recognised as the supreme High Renaissance painter; though he died at 37, Raphael's example as a paragon of classicism dominated the academic tradition of European painting until the mid-19th century. Raphael was born in Urbino where his father, Giovanni Santi, was court painter. He almost certainly began his training there and must have known works by Mantegna, Paolo Uccello and Piero della Francesca from an early age. His earliest paintings were also greatly influenced by Perugino. From 1500 (when he became an independent master) to 1508 he worked throughout central Italy, particularly Florence, where he became a noted portraitist and painter of Madonnas. In 1508, at the age of 25, he was called to the court of Pope Julius II to help with the redecoration of the papal apartments. In Rome he evolved as a portraitist, and became one of the greatest of all history painters. He remained in Rome for the rest of his life and in 1514, on the death of Bramante, he was appointed architect in charge of St Peter's.
