Il nostro cervello non si è evoluto allo scopo di percepire la struttura profonda delle cose, ma per garantirci la sopravvivenza. Ciò significa che non ci siamo evoluti per vedere la realtà, ma per sopravvivere. E vedere la realtà così com’è, in tutti i suoi dettagli, potrebbe diventare un ostacolo alla sopravvivenza. Non importa sapere quale sia la vera natura degli oggetti, ma essere in grado di utilizzare le informazioni che riceviamo in modo funzionale alle nostre esigenze quotidiane. Naturalmente questo mondo “costruito” dal cervello ha una relazione con la realtà, ma non è la realtà. Vediamo un tavolo: esso ci appare come un oggetto solido con contorni stabili e definiti. Quel qualcosa che chiamiamo tavolo certamente esiste, ma non è come appare, perché è un insieme di particelle stipate tra loro e oscillanti. L’autore riesamina i risultati delle proprie ricerche e propone, alla luce delle più recenti teorie della percezione, una concezione della realtà alternativa sia al dualismo cartesiano, sia al riduzionismo materialista.

Questo libro è la prima edizione dell'esito dell'attività di ricerca svolta dall'autore a seguito della sua partecipazione all'XI Ciclo del Dottorato di Ricerca in Progettazione Architettonica e Urbana presso il Politecnico di Milano conclusasi nel dicembre del 1999. Il ruolo del patrimonio culturale e del paesaggio per la costruzione dell'identità territoriale è stato a lungo indagato dalle scienze umane che hanno chiarito le matrici di assetti consolidati, le valenze di componenti naturali e antropiche, i processi di attribuzione e arricchimento dei significati, le ragioni della conservazione e della valorizzazione. Superata questa fase, è necessario interrogarsi sulle modalità di gestione del "capitale culturale" affinché le potenzialità individuate possano esprimersi nei processi di pianificazione e nella programmazione economica; la riflessione scientifica deve, pertanto, focalizzarsi sulle ricadute applicative di impostazioni teorico-metodologiche solide e mature. In tale dibattito si inserisce il volume Patrimonio culturale e paesaggio: un approccio di filiera per la progettualità territoriale che propone un iter di ricerca basato sulla trasversalità e l'integrazione di competenze eterogenee, raccordate nelle fasi della "filiera culturale", al fine di superare la settorialità delle analisi e degli interventi. Per rispondere agli obiettivi della ricerca di base e di quella applicata, le scienze geografiche sono coinvolte in tutto lo spettro degli interessi disciplinari, dalla riflessione sull'essenza del paesaggio ai sistemi più innovativi della rappresentazione cartografica, dall'indagine dei fattori di pressione antropica e di omologazione paesaggistica alle nuove forme di una competitività territoriale perseguita nelle logiche della governance e del distretto culturale. Come un poliedro, il paesaggio va osservato da diverse angolazioni e prospettive per coglierne la molteplicità degli aspetti secondo un approccio multi-qualitativo (multi-quality approach). Analizzando mediante logiche di "filiera" il patrimonio culturale e ambientale, è possibile definire il quadro teorico-operativo a cui raccordare un articolato panel di competenze che, pur maturate negli ambiti specialistici della ricerca, possono costruire un articolato percorso d'indagine territoriale.

Luigi Moretti: Lessons of SPAZIO focuses on the theoretical work of the Italian architect Luigi Moretti (Rome, 1906–1973). It does so selectively, focusing on the editorials he published between 1950 and 1953 as editor-in-chief of the magazine SPAZIO, as well as a further essay on parametric architecture, published in 1971–1972, in the first issue of the magazine MOEBIUS, directed by his friend Giulio Roisecco. This book rediscovers Moretti's personal impact on international architectural theory through thoughtful comments that shed light on the architect's modernity and original approach. Although Moretti is an architect renowned for his projects and buildings, his theoretical essays are less well-known. The aim of this book is therefore to explore Moretti's theoretical work, which covers many topics, including pictorial art, sculpture, architecture, urban planning, music, cinema, poetry, mathematics, computer science, parametricity. In addition to the translation from Italian to English, the book contains reproductions of the original articles, accompanied by a series of essays of critical commentary and updated interpretations that show new ways of approaching, reading, and understanding the foundations of current architectural theory and its progress over the last 50 years. This book approaches Moretti's thought from a new perspective, with the aim of reconsidering the originality of this brilliant and visionary architect who was intellectually ostracised for many years due to political and ideological contingencies, even though he personified the ideal of the 'Renaissance man' in modern times.
