In effetti, poiché ogni presentazione implica, per sua natura, l'offerta di un'immagine del soggetto presentato, la sfida era dare un'idea del Sant'Uffizio che non fosse stereotipa, modellata cioè sui pregiudizi dell'una o dell'altra parte. Established in 1542, the Roman Inquisition operated through a network of almost fifty tribunals to combat heretical and heterodox threats within the papal territories. Whilst its theological, institutional and political aspects have been well-studied, until now no sustained work has been undertaken to understand the financial basis upon which it operated. Yet – as The Business of the Roman Inquisition in the Early Modern Era shows – the fiscal autonomy enjoyed by each tribunal was a major factor in determining how the Inquisition operated. For, as the flow of cash from Rome declined, each tribunal was forced to rely upon its own assets and resources to fund its work, resulting in a situation whereby tribunals increasingly came to resemble businesses. As each tribunal was permitted to keep a substantial proportion of the fines and confiscations it levied, questions quickly arose regarding the economic considerations that may have motivated the Inquisition’s actions. Dr Maifreda argues that the Inquisition, with the need to generate sufficient revenue to continue working, had a clear incentive to target wealthy groups within society who could afford to yield up substantial revenues. Furthermore, as secular authorities also began to rely upon a levy on these revenues, the financial considerations of decisions regarding heresy prosecutions become even greater. Based upon a wealth of hitherto neglected primary sources from the Vatican and local Italian archives, Dr Maifreda reveals the underlying financial structures that played a vital part in the operations of the Roman Inquisition. By exploring the system of incentives and pressures that guided the actions of inquisitors in their procedural processes and choice of victims, a much clearer understanding of the Roman Inquisition emerges. The assessment in Rome of American Catholic Church’s potential and its problems began in the 1880s at the moment when the Holy See was looking for a way to overcome its political marginalization following the capture of Rome on September 20, 1870. In fact, the Vatican was transforming its world-wide religious network into a diplomatic one geared to sustain the international aims of a State that had lost its territory. Moreover, we should not underestimate the migration factor in the Italian Peninsula: the Italian diaspora was growing and Italian members of the Curia were worrying about the future of those who were flowing to the United States and other “Protestant” countries. At the same time, a number of the Vatican diplomats foresaw the shifting religious balance in North America as a result of the increase in Catholic migrants.

Regulating Knowledge in an Entangled World uses case studies from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries to study knowledge transfer in early modern knowledge societies. In the early modern period the scale, intensity, and reach of exchange exploded. This volume develops a historicised understanding of knowledge transfer to shed new light on these fundamental changes. By looking at the preconditions of knowledge transfer, it shifts the focus from the objects circulating to the interactions by which they circulate and the way actors cement their relations. The novelty of this approach shows how rules and regulations were enablers of knowledge circulation, rather than impediments. The chapters identify changing patterns of knowledge transfer in cases such as sixteenth-century Venice, the Spanish Empire in the Americas, continental Habsburg, early seventeenth-century Dutch at sea, and the Offices of the Catholic Church. Through the perspective of ‘regulating’, this volume advances the historiography of knowledge circulation by forging a new combination of histories of circulation and of institutions. By bringing together historians from intellectual history, economic history, book history, the history of science, religion, art, and material culture, this volume is useful for students and scholars interested in early modern knowledge societies and changing patterns of knowledge transfer.

The eight rooms of the museum set up inside the friary host a series of sections devoted to its origins and history as well as the life of those who joined the order and drew inspiration from the example of extraordinary Capuchin saints like Felix of Cantalice, Crispin of Viterbo and Joseph of Leonessa but also contemporary figures known to the public on a vast scale, such as St Pio of Pietrelcina, who bore the stigmata for fifty years, and Father Mariano of Turin, the first multimedia preacher.The museum is also a new repository for the artistic and historical legacy of the Capuchins of Rome and the region of Lazio, as its rooms are in fact designed not only to house and exhibit the various items but also to ensure their preservation. To this end, the opening of the museum was preceded by major work to restore the original splendour not only of various kinds of artworks, books and documents but also and above all Capuchin liturgical vessels and articles of everyday use epitomizing the spirit of humble self-sufficiency that is the hallmark of the order. La creazione di nuovi santi e di nuove sante nei territori della Spagna, del Portogallo e dell’America iberica all’indomani dei decreti del Concilio di Trento contribuisce alla configurazione di un’arte nuova. Il processo ha inizio a Roma, sotto l’egida della Sacra Congregazione dei Riti e delle chiese locali, che negoziarono la creazione di questo nuovo immaginario. Questo primo volume si focalizza per tale ragione su Roma, sul funzionamento dell’organismo deputato alla valutazione delle nuove figure di cui si chiedeva la canonizzazione. I processi di beatificazione e di canonizzazione hanno un ruolo fondamentale nella configurazione di questo universo agiografico: essi rappresentano l’intervento della Chiesa di Roma ma testimoniano anche il processo di mediazione con le chiese locali, che ebbero parte attiva nella creazione della nuova santità. L’esito dei processi di canonizzazione fu celebrato attraverso cerimonie alle quali parteciparono la Chiesa di Roma e le chiese locali, con un apparato festivo e artistico che oggi possiamo studiare sia attraverso i testi, sia attraverso le stampe.
