This book examines the processes involved in writing the lives of women, both as autobiographies and as biographies. Some essays are theoretical discussions about the constructions of self-articulation in women's life writing. Others are more autobiographical, emphasizing the importance of self-articulation for creating possibilities for self-direction. Adopting different theoretical approaches, chapters in this collection highlight the connections between subjectivity and history, feminist concerns about mothering and the mother-daughter relationships, autobiography, discourse and its framing of the relationship between text and life, and the ethics of constructing biographies. The book is divided into three parts: the first part focuses on the process of writing lives as expressed but also contested in epistolary narratives, autobiography and historical fiction. The second part considers notions of female genealogy and the relationship with the maternal, both biological and symbolic. The third part comprises articles which deal with writing outside geographical and metaphorical borders.

Il male si sminuisce da sé. E questo il cammino mostrato al mio lettore, le cui direzioni intenzionali sono nei fatti, sono ordinati da una visione d’insieme imprendibile.

Le opinioni se sono oggetto di discussione ed approfondimento, in TV diventano testimonianze. Ergo: Fatti. Con me i pareri e le opinioni cangianti, contrapposte e in contraddittorio, diventano fatti. Con me i fatti, e la Cronaca che li produce, diventano Storia. Rappresentare con verità storica, anche scomoda ai potenti di turno, la realtà contemporanea, rapportandola al passato e proiettandola al futuro. Per non reiterare vecchi errori. Perché la massa dimentica o non conosce. Denuncio i difetti e caldeggio i pregi italici. Perché non abbiamo orgoglio e dignità per migliorarci e perché non sappiamo apprezzare, tutelare e promuovere quello che abbiamo ereditato dai nostri avi. Quel ragazzo non ha avuto la possibilità di frequentare una scuola come succede in tempi normali, anche la guida della famiglia gli è mancata, certamente non per colpa dei genitori che gli hanno dato tutto quello che potevano in un tempo nel quale bisognava far fronte alla fame e alla paura. Privato di questi sostegni era diventato un ragazzo “sviato”, libero da ogni autorità sia in famiglia che a scuola, aveva scelto, come alternativa ad una vita normale, allora impossibile, la strada dove poteva abbandonarsi nei suoi vagabondaggi al flusso della gente che compare e scompare come le rapide sequenze di un film. Ha acquistato così lo sguardo del Flaneur che, come dice Walter Benjamin, impara a conoscere il mondo nelle sue infinite manifestazioni. In quei giorni lontani è andato incontro alla realtà che aveva intorno a sé, ha guardato in faccia le persone che come larve svuotate di vita correvano senza mai fermarsi, ha incontrato la grande miseria e la grande paura.
