Rash Promises written by James E Southern and has been published by WestBow Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-06-26 with Religion categories.

Put off by Christian jargon and pat answers? James Southern relates how he was put off during his initial contact with reborners, as he labelled those who claimed to be born again. He recounts his skepticism, his conversion, his Bible School years, his life in Israel, and his intermittent backsliding. Rash Promises incorporates these life experiences, often humorous, with a study of rash promises and rash conduct by scriptural characters. Failing to learn what not to say and what not to do hinders one’s spiritual progress. And renouncing rash vows frees a person to live more fully for the Lord.

Age Of Promises written by David Thackeray and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021 with History categories.

Age of Promises explores the issue of electoral promises in twentieth century Britain - how they were made, how they were understood, and how they evolved across time - through a study of general election manifestos and election addresses. The authors argue that a history of the act of making promises - which is central to the political process, but which has not been sufficiently analysed - illuminates the development of political communication and democratic representation. The twentieth century saw a broad shift away from politics viewed as a discursive process whereby, at elections, it was enough to set out broad principles, with detailed policymaking to follow once in office following reflection and discussion. Over the first part of the century parties increasingly felt required to compile lists of specific policies to offer to voters, which they were then considered to have an obligation to carry out come what may. From 1945 onwards, moreover, there was even more focus on detailed, costed, pledges. We live in an age of growing uncertainty over the authority and status of political promises. In the wake of the 2016 EU referendum controversy erupted over parliamentary sovereignty. Should 'the will of the people' as manifested in the referendum result be supreme, or did MPs owe a primary responsibility to their constituents and/or to the party manifestos on which they had been elected? Age of Promises demonstrates that these debates build on a long history of differing understandings about what status of manifestos and addresses should have in shaping the actions of government.

The Enforceability Of Promises In European Contract Law written by James Gordley and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-07-12 with Law categories.

Civil law and common law systems are held to enforce promises differently: civil law, in principle, will enforce any promise, while common law will enforce only those with 'consideration'. In that respect, modern civil law supposedly differs from the Roman law from which it descended, where a promise was enforced depending on the type of contract the parties had made. This 2001 volume is concerned with the extent to which these characterizations are true, and how these and other differences affect the enforceability of promises. Beginning with a concise history of these distinctions, the volume then considers how twelve European legal systems would deal with fifteen concrete situations. Finally, a comparative section considers why legal systems enforce certain promises and not others, and what promises should be enforced. This is the second completed project of The Common Core of European Private Law launched at the University of Trento.

How To Be Trustworthy written by Katherine Hawley and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-26 with Philosophy categories.

We become untrustworthy when we break our promises, miss our deadlines, or offer up unreliable information. If we aim to be a trustworthy person, we need to act in line with our existing commitments and we must also take care not to bite off more than we can chew when new opportunities come along. But often it is not clear what we will be able to manage, what obstacles may prevent us from keeping our promises, or what changes may make our information unreliable. In the face of such uncertainties, trustworthiness typically directs us towards caution and hesitancy, and away from generosity, spontaneity, or shouldering burdens for others. In How To Be Trustworthy, Katherine Hawley explores what trustworthiness means in our lives and the dilemmas which arise if we value trustworthiness in an uncertain world. She argues there is no way of guaranteeing a clean conscience. We can become untrustworthy by taking on too many commitments, no matter how well-meaning we are, yet we can become bad friends, colleagues, parents, or citizens if we take on too few commitments. Hawley shows that we can all benefit by being more sensitive to obstacles to trustworthiness, and recognising that those who live in challenging personal circumstances face greater obstacles than other members of society—whether visibly or invisibly disadvantaged through material poverty, poor health, social exclusion, or power imbalances.

“On The Law of War and Peace” was translated into many languages, and most law schools adopted it as the basis of the right of nations. Princes and statesmen consulted the book, and just as Alexander the Great always had a copy of Homer's ‘Iliad,’ so the great Gustavus Adolphus always had with him a copy of Grotius’ work, to remind himself that even the most successful general must respect some laws. Grotius’ strength lies in his moderation and in the fact that he quotes copiously from the best authorities to fortify his views .

Twelve Stones written by Kay Adkins and has been published by Xulon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-10 with Religion categories.

The title for this book is taken from the fourth chapter of the Book of Joshua. The Israelites had crossed the Jordan River into the Promised Land and God commanded that they take twelve stones from the river as a memorial of what He had done for them. This is the author's memorial of what God has done for her. Twelve Stones was written for anyone who has an addiction to overcome. Kay's primary challenge and addiction has been alcoholism, but there were others to conquer also. Through years of trial and error, she discovered that Jesus Christ is the only way to victory over any addiction. In a collection of essays written during a two year period of her recovery walk, without sugarcoating, she freely relays the struggles, tears, fears, and the failures. But there are successes too, and there is no mistaking the joy and the peace of God that she experiences along the way. Come on that journey with her. Learn from her mistakes and benefit from her successes and this "...peace of God that passeth all understanding..." (Philippians 4:7) can be yours too. Kay lives in New Mexico with her husband of 45 years (though they will finally be moving back to Texas upon her husband's retirement). They have three children, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. She has a degree in Psychology from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas and has enjoyed three very different careers: accounting, writer/publisher, and substance abuse counselor. She is now planning to concentrate her time and efforts on her spiritual life, her family, her church, and her writing. (If you want to hear God laugh, just tell Him your plans.)
