Excerpt from Hardy Fruit Culture The term "fruit tree" conjures up, for many people, the image of a great tree with immense spreading branches and wandering roots. "We have no room for fruit trees," they say, and that is the chief reason why many owners of small gardens do not plant fruit trees. Insecurity of tenure provides another reason - the man who hires his garden on a very short lease does not care to plant trees because he is under the impression that he cannot move them if, and when, he gives up the land. The general belief that fruit trees will not come into bearing until they are ten or twelve years old is another thing which militates against the planting of hardy fruits. It is time that all this misunderstanding was swept away; every one should know that when fruit trees are worked on the right kind of stock, they will take up very little room in the garden, they will come into bearing within two or three years after grafting and, if necessary, they may be lifted and moved even when they have been growing in the same spot for six or eight years. With respect to the last point, it is necessary under existing laws, to obtain the permission of the landlord before planting trees in hired gardens; then the trees may be moved when the tenancy expires. Excerpt from The Raspberry and Its Cultivation in Canada: With a Section on Insects Affecting the Raspberry, and a Section on Raspberry Diseases Ohta - Originated by N. E. Hansen, South Dakota. One of the hardiest varieties. Fruit is rather small and moderately firm. Where Newman and Viking can be grown it is not to be recommended, but is desirable for use in very severe areas. It is also much earlier than most varieties. Ranere (st. Regis). - Originated in New Jersey. Fruit medium in size, roundish, bright crimson; firm, moderately juicy, mildly subacid, little distinct flavour; quality medium. Season very early to very late. Plant hardy, vigor ous and productive. This is commonly known as St. Regis Everbearing, but it was grown for some time under the name of Ranere before being introduced by the firm of J. T. Lovett under the name of St. Regis. Most of the crop Of this variety is borne in the early part of the summer, but a small proportion develops and a still smaller proportion ripens on the new canes. A wet autumn is usually favourable for late fruiting. In dry weather the fruit does not develop well. The amount of the late crop depends very much on the character of the season. Where one has plenty of room and desires raspberries in autumn this variety will usually supply them, but it is not good enough in quality to depend on for the main crop. Sunbeam. - Another production of Hansen's which succeeds on the prairies without protection. Recommended along with Ohta for very severe areas. Excerpt from Peach Culture The great increase of the peach trade is shown by the fact that the shipment from the Peninsula in 1870 was stated at baskets. In the abundant year of 1875 the shipment reached over baskets, and it is estimated that as many, or more, were left on the trees or under them. Among the inventions to facilitate the operations of the peach-grower that have appeared since the first edi tion are Peach Cullers. One of these will do the work of five or six hands; and as they do it as well, or better, they have, in large orchards, superseded culling by hand.
