Kurzinhalt: Die Behauptung, bei den Opfern der Hexenprozesse habe es sich um "weise Frauen" gehandelt, deren Wissen auf das Erbe "unserer" germanischen Vorfahren zurückgehe, kann zweifellos als nachhaltigster Topos populärer Hexenvorstellungen gelten. Dabei ist längst bekannt, dass es sich hier lediglich um eine romantische Erfindung handelt. Was aber macht den Mythos der weisen Frau dennoch so attraktiv, dass er bis heute immer wieder reproduziert wird? Die Studie rekonstruiert anhand eines umfangreichen Textkorpus aus dem 19. und 20. Jahrhundert Entstehung, Geschichte und Funktion dieses Topos. Nachhaltige Bedeutung kommt dabei den neureligiösen und esoterischen Strömungen der Moderne zu. Im Zentrum der Untersuchung stehen völkische Bewegung, Neuheidentum und spiritueller Feminismus: Die in diesen scheinbar so differenten Kontexten verbreiteten Hexenrekurse weisen analoge Deutungsmuster auf, die auf tradierte Interpretationen des 19. Jahrhunderts zurückgehen. So entpuppt sich die verfolgte germanische weise Frau als literarische Fiktion der Romantik. Anhand wiederkehrender symbolischer Verknüpfungen zeigt sich schließlich die Funktion dieses Mythos als Projektionsfläche romantischer Naturauffassungen, polarer Geschlechtermodelle und moderner Entwürfe einer scheinbar authentischen religiösen Tradition. Von konstitutiver Bedeutung ist in diesen Kontexten aber vor allem die radikale Ablehnung des Christentums. Nicht nur in völkischen und neuheidnischen, sondern auch in feministischen Hexendarstellungen haben sich in diesem Zusammenhang wiederholt antisemitische Denkfiguren bemerkbar gemacht, die als antichristlicher Antisemitismus charakterisiert und analysiert werden könne.

This volume provides a state-of-the-art analysis on the fourth wave of far-right politics in Germany by leading scholars in the field. Innovatively, the book focuses not only on the role of the electoral breakthrough of AfD, the Federal Republic’s first-ever nationally established far-right party, but also on the many crucial instances of non-party activism, such as the ‘New Right’ intellectual circles, PEGIDA street protest, and political violence. For a long time, Germany was regarded as an exceptional case because of the lack of an established far-right party on the national level. Times have changed – but Germany still remains unique. The book highlights four features that continue to make the case exceptional within Western Europe: (I) The strong diversity of vibrant far-right political players in Germany and their many interconnections, (II) the electoral success of AfD, i.e. the delayed electoral breakthrough of a far-right party on the national level, (III) the importance of ‘militant democracy’, specifically how established players have responded to AfD, and (IV) the relevance of the east-west divide for understanding far-right politics in Germany. Otto Höfler (1901–1987) was an Austrian Germanist and Scandinavist. His research on ‘Germanic culture’, in particular on Germanic Männerbünde (men’s bands), was controversial and remains a topic of academic debate. In modern discourse, Höfler’s theories are often fundamentally rejected on account of his involvement in the National Socialist movement and his contribution to the research initiatives of the SS Ahnenerbe, or they are adopted by scholars who ignore his problematic methodologies and the ideological and political elements of his work. The present study takes a comprehensive approach to Höfler’s research on ‘Germanic culture’ and analyses his characterisation of the ‘Germanic peoples’, contextualising his research in the backdrop of German philological studies of the early twentieth century and highlighting elements of his theories that are still the topic of modern academic discourse.
