Die Untersuchung zur Rezeption der stoischen Philosophie in zentralen Tragödien des 17. Jahrhunderts von Andreas Gryphius (1616-1664) (»Leo Armenius«, »Catharina von Georgien«, »Papinian«) und Daniel Casper von Lohenstein (1635-1683) (»Cleopatra«, »Agrippina«, »Epicharis«) nimmt sich vor, die ideellen Fundamente der beginnenden Neuzeit aus der Warte der Tradition aufzudecken. Die stoische Philosophie wird von ihrer bisherigen in der Barockforschung topischen Reduzierung auf eine ars moriendi und auf das Phänomen der constantia befreit und als Kulturphilosophie ernstgenommen, wie sie sich im gesamten Werk Senecas, in seinen Briefen, Dialogen und Tragödien, manifestiert. Dort entwickelt sie unter der Prämisse des secundum naturam vivere eine Ethik Lebens und Handelns auf der Basis des traditionellen Naturrechts und des Gewissens. Die ideengeschichtliche Analyse zeigt, wie diese Konstanten in den frühneuzeitlichen Tragödien auftreten und die Anforderungen der modernen staatstheoretischen Entwürfe und des neuen konstruierten Naturrechts einer Kritik unterziehen. Die Dramen reflektieren dabei die zeitgenössischen wissenschaftlichen Entwicklungen, deren Naturverständnis die Grundlagen für das moderne konstruierte Naturrecht schaffen. Sie zeigen auf vielfältige Weise, daß es keine echten Stoiker mehr geben kann, da den Voraussetzungen für eine praktische stoische Philosophie in der Frühen Neuzeit der Boden entzogen ist.

In Benjamin’s Library, Jane O. Newman offers, for the first time in any language, a reading of Walter Benjamin’s notoriously opaque work, Origin of the German Tragic Drama that systematically attends to its place in discussions of the Baroque in Benjamin’s day. Taking into account the literary and cultural contexts of Benjamin’s work, Newman recovers Benjamin’s relationship to the ideologically loaded readings of the literature and political theory of the seventeenth-century Baroque that abounded in Germany during the political and economic crises of the Weimar years. To date, the significance of the Baroque for Origin of the German Tragic Drama has been glossed over by students of Benjamin, most of whom have neither read it in this context nor engaged with the often incongruous debates about the period that filled both academic and popular texts in the years leading up to and following World War I. Armed with extraordinary historical, bibliographical, philological, and orthographic research, Newman shows the extent to which Benjamin participated in these debates by reconstructing the literal and figurative history of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century books that Benjamin analyzes and the literary, art historical and art theoretical, and political theological discussions of the Baroque with which he was familiar. In so doing, she challenges the exceptionalist, even hagiographic, approaches that have become common in Benjamin studies. The result is a deeply learned book that will infuse much-needed life into the study of one of the most influential thinkers of the twentieth century.

This book explores the secret relations between theatre and diplomacy from the Tudors to the Treaty of Westphalia. It offers an original insight into the art of diplomacy in the 1580-1655 period through the prism of literature, theatre and material history. Contributors investigate English, Italian and German plays of Renaissance theoretical texts on diplomacy, lifting the veil on the intimate relations between ambassadors and the artistic world and on theatre as an unexpected instrument of 'soft power'. Proving fruitful in various applications throughout its two millennia of predominance, the rhetorical téchne appears to have entertained a particularly symbiotic interrelation with drama. With contributions from (among others) a Classicist, historical, linguistic, musicological, operatic, cultural and literary studies perspective, this publication offers interdisciplinary assessments of specific reciprocities between the system of rhetoric and dramatic works: tracing the longue durée of this nexus—highlighting its Ancient foundations, its various Early Modern formations, as well as certain configurations enduring to this day—enables describing shifting degrees of rhetoricity; approaching it from an interdisciplinary viewpoint facilitates focusing on the often sidelined rhetorical phenomena located beyond the textual plane, specifically memoria and actio; tackling this interchange from various viewpoints and with diverse emphases, a long-lasting and highly prolific cross-fertilization between drama and rhetoric is rendered visible. In tendering a balanced panorama of both detailed case studies and descriptive overviews, this volume also points toward terrain yet to be charted in the scholarship to come. To metaphorize the world as a theatre has been a common procedure since antiquity, but the use of this trope became particularly prominent and pregnant in early modern times, especially in England. Old and new applications of the “theatrum mundi” topos pervaded discourses, often allegorizing the deceitfulness and impermanence of this world as well as the futility of earthly strife. It was frequently woven into arguments against worldly amusements such as the stage: Commercial theatre was declared an undesirable competitor of God’s well-ordered world drama. Early modern dramatists often reacted to this development by appropriating the metaphor, and in an ingenious twist, some playwrights even appropriated its anti-theatrical impetus: Early modern theatre seemed to discover a denial of its own theatricality at its very core. Drama was found to succeed best when it staged itself as a great unmasking. To investigate the reasons and effects of these developments, the anthology examines the metaphorical uses of theatre in plays, pamphlets, epics, treatises, legal proclamations and other sources.

Der Tagungsband eröffnet neue Perspektiven auf das Gesamtwerk des berühmtesten deutschen Autors des literarischen Barock. Im Zentrum steht eine zeithistorische, staatsphilosophische, theologische und wissenschaftsgeschichtliche Kontextualisierung seines Œuvres, das sich in einem spannungsvollen Feld zwischen christlich-transzendenter Perspektive und ‚säkularer‘ Zeitdiagnostik, zwischen theologischem Sinnhorizont und Realitätsbezug bewegt. Damit setzt der Band im Anschluss an gegenwärtige Tendenzen der Frühneuzeitforschung einen neuen Akzent innerhalb der Gryphius-Philologie, die diskursgeschichtliche Zusammenhänge vernachlässigte und einen zu revidierenden Dualismus zwischen theologischer und säkularer Deutung etablierte. Dabei spielen komparatistische und interkulturelle Aspekte eine bedeutende Rolle: Gryphius war auf seinen akademischen Reisen mit der rezenten französischen, italienischen und niederländischen Literatur bekannt geworden. Deren Rezeption durch Gryphius wird ebenso verstärkt untersucht wie das lateinische Werk des Schlesiers. Gryphius erscheint als Zeitgenosse tiefgreifender Erneuerungsdebatten, die er mit feinem Gespür aufzunehmen und in seinen Dichtungen zu verhandeln weiß.
