This is the first of three volumes that, together, give an exposition of the mathematics of grades 9–12 that is simultaneously mathematically correct and grade-level appropriate. The volumes are consistent with CCSSM (Common Core State Standards for Mathematics) and aim at presenting the mathematics of K–12 as a totally transparent subject. The present volume begins with fractions, then rational numbers, then introductory geometry that can make sense of the slope of a line, then an explanation of the correct use of symbols that makes sense of “variables”, and finally a systematic treatment of linear equations that explains why the graph of a linear equation in two variables is a straight line and why the usual solution method for simultaneous linear equations “by substitutions” is correct. This book should be useful for current and future teachers of K–12 mathematics, as well as for some high school students and for education professionals.

"This book is awesome! What stood out to me was the deep understanding I was able to have about what fluency actually means. Too often the message has been fluency and accuracy, especially at the middle school level. By providing teachers with tools for building fluency with integers, expressions, and algebra, this book shifts that message to also focus on flexibility and strategy selection." Lindsey Henderson Secondary Mathematics Specialist, Utah State Board of Education Salt Lake City, UT Because fluency practice is not a worksheet. Fluency in mathematics is more than adeptly using basic facts or implementing algorithms. It is not about speed or recall. Real fluency is about choosing strategies that are efficient, flexible, lead to accurate solutions, and are appropriate for the given situation. Developing fluency is also a matter of equity and access for all learners. The landmark book Figuring Out Fluency in Mathematics Teaching and Learning offered educators the inspiration to develop a deeper understanding of procedural fluency, along with a plethora of pragmatic tools for shifting classrooms toward a fluency approach. Now, teachers have the chance to apply that inspiration through explicit instruction and practice every day with the classroom companion Figuring Out Fluency—Operations With Rational Numbers and Algebraic Equations. With this book, teachers can Dive deeper into the Significant Strategies for fluency explained in the anchor book as they apply to rational number operations Explore how these strategies can be applied for proportional reasoning, solving equations for unknowns, and solving systems of linear equations Access over 100 classroom-ready activities, including worked examples, routines, and games. Find activities to explicitly teach students how to use and choose strategies to operate on rational numbers and solve algebraic equations Download all of the needed support tools, game boards, and other resources from the companion website for immediate implementation Give each and every student the knowledge and power to become skilled and confident mathematical thinkers and doers.

Numbers And Symmetry written by Bernard L. Johnston and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-25 with Mathematics categories.

This textbook presents modern algebra from the ground up using numbers and symmetry. The idea of a ring and of a field are introduced in the context of concrete number systems. Groups arise from considering transformations of simple geometric objects. The analysis of symmetry provides the student with a visual introduction to the central algebraic notion of isomorphism. Designed for a typical one-semester undergraduate course in modern algebra, it provides a gentle introduction to the subject by allowing students to see the ideas at work in accessible examples, rather than plunging them immediately into a sea of formalism. The student is involved at once with interesting algebraic structures, such as the Gaussian integers and the various rings of integers modulo n, and is encouraged to take the time to explore and become familiar with those structures. In terms of classical algebraic structures, the text divides roughly into three parts:

Mathematical Foundations Of Computational Engineering written by Peter J. Pahl and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Science categories.

Computational engineering is the treatment of engineering tasks with computers. It is based on computational mathematics, which is presented here in a comprehensive handbook. Engineers and scientists who deal with engineering tasks have to handle large amounts of information, which must be created and structured in a systematic manner. This demands a high level of abstraction and therefore knowledge of the mathematical foundations. From the existing rich repertoire of mathematical theories and methods, the fundamentals of engineering computation are selected and presented in a coherent fashion. They are brought into a suitable order for specific engineering purposes, and their significance for typical applications is shown. The relevant definitions, notations and theories are presented in a durable form which is independent of the fast development of information and communication technology.
