Rational Process Design and Simulation Modeling with Witness Horizon 22 Lanner Group released the latest update to their WITNESS process simulation software, WITNESS Horizon 22, in 2018. WITNESS Horizon includes many updates from prior releases especially including dramatic enhancements in three-dimensional modeling, Data Tables and charting tools. This edition of Rational Process Design & Simulation Modeling with WITNESS Horizon 22 provides an introduction to manufacturing process design and simulation modeling. More than being just a simple explanation of the mechanics of developing simulation models, there is a significant focus on the use of Axiomatic Design for manufacturing processes and building stochastic simulation models based on a strong foundation of process and product functional requirements. The approach is conversational with occasional humorous asides, taking the reader through a series of exercises that are illustrated step-by-step. The seven chapters of exercises sequentially build knowledge, experience and the reader's self-confidence. After all, one would certainly be reluctant to learn to ride a bicycle from reading a book. Learning to develop useful simulation models is, in the end, best accomplished by actually building models and this text supports that model building with a thorough level of detail. Table of Contents Chapter 1 - Planning Your Simulation Project Chapter 2 - Introduction to Lanner WITNESS Structure & Menus Chapter 3 - Building Your First Model! Chapter 4 Modeling SMT Electronic Manufacturing Chapter 5 Conveyors, Paths and Pretzel Logic Chapter 6 Variables and Variability Stochastic modeling Fitting probability density functions to data Data Tables Charts Chapter 7 Advanced Topics 3 D modeling Axiomatic Design PFMEA and Simulation Chapter 8.0 Activity Based Costs and Simulation

The main idea of this book is that to comprehend the instructional potential of simulation and to design effective simulation-based learning environments, one has to consider both what happens inside the computer and inside the students' minds. The framework adopted to do this is model-centered learning, in which simulation is seen as particularly effective when learning requires a restructuring of the individual mental models of the students, as in conceptual change. Mental models are by themeselves simulations, and thus simulation models can extend our biological capacity to carry out simulative reasoning. For this reason, recent approaches in cognitive science like embodied cognition and the extended mind hypothesis are also considered in the book.. A conceptual model called the “epistemic simulation cycle” is proposed as a blueprint for the comprehension of the cognitive activies involved in simulation-based learning and for instructional design.

Science is a way of looking, reverencing. And the purpose of all science, like living, which amounts to the same thing, is not the ac cumulation of gnostic power, the fixing of formulas for the name of God, the stockpiling of brutal efficiency, accomplishing the sadistic myth of progress. The purpose of science is to revive and cultivate a perpetual state of wonder. For nothing deserves wonder so much as our capacity to experience it. Roald Hoffman and Shira Leibowitz Schmidt, in Old Wine, New Flasks: Re. flections on Science and Jewish Tradition (W. H. Freeman, 1997). Challenges in Teaching Molecular Modeling This textbook evolved from a graduate course termed Molecular Modeling intro duced in the fall of 1996 at New York University. The primary goal of the course is to stimulate excitement for molecular modeling research - much in the spirit of Hoffman and Leibowitz Schmidt above - while providing grounding in the discipline. Such knowledge is valuable for research dealing with many practical problems in both the acadernic and industrial sectors, from developing treatments for AIDS (via inhibitors to the protease enzyme of the human imrnunodeficiency virus, HIV-1) to designing potatoes that yie1d spot-free potato chips (via trans genic potatoes with altered carbohydrate metabolism). In the course of writing xii Preface this text, the notes have expanded to function also as an introduction to the field for scientists in other disciplines by providing a global perspective into problems and approaches, rather than a comprehensive survey.

Witness HORIZON 25 Simulation Modeling: Rational Process Design Lanner Group released the latest update to their WITNESS process simulation software, WITNESS HORIZON 25, in 2022. WITNESS HORIZON 25 includes many enahncements from prior releases. These improvements build upon Witness's strengths in modeling discrete even and flow processes. Some of these capabilities? Best in class capability to model multicycle machines, model machine breakdowns with multiple breakdown causes, each with independent frequencies of occurrence, and finally modeling internal and external setup activities. To facilitate digital twinning, Witness HORIZON can both receive data from external sources and supply data as an output. These interactions can be with Microsoft Excel and Access as well as through SQL. This fully color illustrated edition of Witness HORIZON 25 Simulation Modeling: Rational Process Design provides an introduction to manufacturing process design and simulation modeling. More than being just a simple explanation of the mechanics of developing simulation models, there is a significant focus on the use of Axiomatic Design for manufacturing processes and building stochastic simulation models based on a strong foundation of process and product functional requirements. The author's approach is conversational with occasional humorous asides, taking the reader through a series of realistic exercises that are illustrated step-by-step. The eight chapters of exercises sequentially build knowledge, experience and, in the end, the modeler's self-confidence. After all, one would certainly be reluctant to learn to ride a bicycle from reading a book. Learning to develop useful simulation models is, in the end, best accomplished by actually building models and this text supports that model building activity with a thorough level of detail.
