The ends to which the conclusions of Rational Psychology may be rendered subservient. Rational Psychology is itself a science, and complete in its own department. It gives the mind, through all its functions of intellectual agency, in the conditioning laws which control all its operations and interpret all its processes of knowledge; and when thus completed it has filled its own measure and answered its own end. But interesting as is this Science of the Mind, and worthy to be pursued for its own sake, and competent to give satisfaction even when resting within its own conclusions, yet is there the opportunity of starting from its results, and making its conclusions subservient to farther advances. It may be rendered directly instrumental in the solution of some of the most interesting and difficult problems within the whole compass of the sciences. Indeed, through no other process is it practicable to obtain a position, from whence some of the highest points in philosophy may be brought within the range of direct examination. There are many questions, involving the highest speculative and practical interests of mankind, which stand precisely in this condition, that they receive a ready assent in the common conviction, and control, the universal conduct of the world; and yet when this universal assent is carefully examined, and the effort is made to trace the conviction up to its original ground, it is found to rest wholly upon assumption. Excerpt from Empirical and Rational Psychology: Embracing Cognitions, Feelings, and Volitions Psychology treats directly of Cognition, Feeling, and Volition, and indirectly of Intellect, Sensibility, and Will. Greater prominence is thus given to the phenomena of the soul, with their conditions and laws, than to the faculties implied by these phenomena. Though much light has, no doubt, been thrown upon Psychology by the investigations of Physiologists, - light which the Psychologist should heartily welcome, - yet to know any phenomenon, as it is in itself, we must study it as revealed in consciousness. This is especially true of the higher processes of thought. Thus, to understand the nature of the reasoning process, it will not suffice to examine the structure and functions of the nerves, the ganglia, the brain, and the organs of sense, but we must analyze the reasoning process itself as a known fact of conscious experience. The discussion of the Intuitions is introduced at an early stage, since they afford the fundamental principles for subsequent investigations. To defer the consideration of fundamental principles to the last pages, as is commonly done, would embarass all preceding discussions. What would be thought of a writer on Geometry, who should put his axioms on the last page of his book? The difficulty of discussing fundamental principles is no justification for such an arrangement, since any mind mature enough to undertake the study of Psychology, is certainly prepared to understand a clear presentation of its first principles.
